I think there may be a slight disconnect between some fans and NJ in their balanced thoughts of playing time, risk, injuries, and bad luck.

We finished with quite an "easy" preseason game, so we need to bring some players up to speed. Expect to see a strong team with just a handful of changes.
Agree with this as long as those changes come via the playing bench from Saturday and not all from the start and as long as you haven’t got really big hands of course.

some posters clearly weren’t going to games when we were shit last season and staring at the relegation slots.

I also wonder whether any of those that are so dismissive of playing the same side because it’s only the Carabou Cup are actually going to the game tonight.

    I'll be going
  • Surely Dixon will feature?
    I can’t see it
  • Sports science and NJ can decide what minutes players need or can manage, but we could swap the entire front 3 from Saturday, and have Miles and Tanto up front with Knibbs behind them and be as strong or even stronger up front.

I think this season there's going to be a lot of rotation up front, as we have so many options and nobody stands out as being a clear first choice.
  • The thing to remember is that we have a very even squad now in terms of quality. We don't have 11 first teamers and 11 backups, it's more like 18 first teamers and 6 backups

Tanto, Miles, Knibbs, Gillesphey all came off the bench on Saturday, none of them would consider themselves backup players. Ditto Costello or the injured Burke and Godden. Mannion and Karoy Anderson were both regulars last season.

Thus we can rotate, and not actually reduce the quality. It's not like previous seasons where the backup players were kids or no hopers. It keeps the squad fresh, and maintains healthy competition.
We’ve played ONE competitive game so far. It takes around 5 or 6 competitive games before a player is, basically, match fit. We had the edge over Watford because we had the core players from last season and we’d p played more pre season friendliest than Watford’s 4 games. This coming Saturday we are going up against a. Bristol City team that won away at Sheffield United because the home team clearly hadn’t had a lot of time playing alongside each other. We need to get more minutes into the players that were on the pitch against Watford, starting with the 11 that kicked off and held their own for so long.

But then there’s also the argument that the players aren’t fully match fit yet, so why put them through a needless Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday when they aren’t 100% yet so could be more likely to pick up injury.

The reality is that it will be different for different players. Some players might need more competitive minutes, some might need a rest so they can stay injury free and play on Saturday. I’d be surprised if more than 4 of Saturdays eleven starts again tonight

There’s absolutely zero chance we’re picking the same xi tonight. I’m actually looking forward to it,  it will be good to see some of the players who didn’t start on Saturday get a start tonight. We should still have a team strong enough to beat Stevenage and progress to the next round.

We won on Saturday because (surprisingly) we have a better squad than Watford. They perhaps had a better starting 11, but their subs made them worse whereas our subs were at the same level as the starters.
  • Many going tonight?
Thinking of taking the kids, was going to wait for them to come back from footy summer camp and decide.  What time is the Katrine tax applied or has that already happened?

I always enjoy these games, as they tend to be more relaxed than the league matches. Nathan usually likes to mix and match for lower key cup games but we all know that Stevenage are no mugs. As many have predicted, I think he’ll give the Mitchells, Gillesphey, Leaburn and Tanto a start and there are bound to be some minutes for Kelman and Knibbs. I don’t know if JRC has recovered from his knock, whilst I hope that we get to see some minutes for Fullah in a competitive game.

The fact that the first three home games are 12:30s has scuppered my usual pre-match routine, so today will also be a chance to visit some favourite watering holes like the Dog and Bell and hopefully The River Ale House prior to the game.

No mention of Charlton TV. Assume its not being streamed?
    It's on Sky
Happy days, thatl be fawanews viewing then, never have any issues with the streams they host.
  • Is this being streamed on Charlton TV? Have a vague notion that they weren’t allowed to show these games last year?
IIRC, it’s the FA games that can’t be shown on CharltonTV.
Seen a few replies to this and other similar questions.

Does anyone know for definite?     Nothing obvious on the OS.
PWR yes it is, I bought the pass for it last night......... I'm in Belgium tonight.....

Are you really comparing the squad now to last August?
No guarantee that the half dozen changes will win the game against a decent Stevenage team but I would imagine Bristol City will make the same amount of changes against MK Dons as we do tonight.

Why bring a squad together and not give them game time in cups where possible ?

Are you sure you bought the Video Pass and not the Audio. How much did you pay. I cannot find any stream being available.

CharltonTV subscribers worldwide can enjoy live audio commentary of Tuesday's Carabao Cup clash against Stevenage at The Valley (KO 7.45pm BST).

EFL broadcast rules dictate that the club is unable to live stream the fixture, meaning audio commentary is the best way to follow all of the action of you're not in SE7.

CharltonTV regulars Terry Smith and Greg Stubley will be providing live commentary.

Existing monthly and annual CharltonTV and CharltonTV LIVE (overseas) subscribers will have live audio commentary of the fixture covered as part of their subscriptions.

Supporters in the UK and Ireland can watch every kick of the action live on Sky Sports+.

  • Start with the strongest team from those selected, then subs as necessary when we’re three to the good.

    Those worldwide (like myself)

Need a VPN,  UK connection, then head to NOW (Formally NOW TV) Match pass is a whooping 14 quid.

I believe that is the only way to access the stream.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

The number and quality of forwards available for a game like this is such a good thing to see.

If you rest a few players  4 years ago it would probably have been a choice of goal machine Ronnie  Schwartz ( if fit ) or Josh Davison to lead the line.
  • Play all the fringe players and so what if we lose.
I’m not going back to L1 again, even as League Cup Winners.

Yes, it was £10 which is the 'normal' price for one game - and I was sent an email which included the wording 'Live Video Pass' (see below) - so not sure why I was able to do it as when I log in now it's not there for me to be able to watch.....

TBH, I got my days muddled yesterday, I bought it last night as I sat here at 7:40 thinking it was Tuesday and match night..... that'll teach me!  :)

And I've come all the way to Belgium too!  :D

Oh well, will ask for a refund I guess....
