Standing back a bit, the heated discussion about Apter's role seems to come down to whether you think we have everything we need to make a go of it in the Champ based on our current squad. Why would anybody think that can be the case before a ball is kicked? Because NJ and the recruitment team have finished their work? Who knows that, nobody on this forum for sure. Because Apter has played at RWB in some of the friendlies? Maybe that is because we do not yet have a proper RWB and somebody has to play there.
I like to put two and two together and make four. We do not have a proper RWB in the squad at present. Rumours are we are looking for one. In the meantime somebody will play in that position. Good luck to them indeed. But does not take away the need to sign a proper RWB.
The weird thing is if/when we do sign a real RWB, those who are insistent that Apter is the man will just go silent because they will know it was the right thing to do. So be it.
What do you think the plan is for Apter's main position this season?

He's not a striker (and we've signed a couple of them), we've signed Knibbs and Carey so have new attacking midfield options, and he was one of our more expensive signings so isn't here to sit on the bench.

I'd be surprised if he doesn't start at RWB on Saturday because there's no where else in the team he obviously fits. I'd also expect Jones to change where he plays if over a number of games it becomes clear the RWB role doesn't suit Apter, so it's not set in stone, but I think the first few months will show it was the plan.

Impossible to read NJ's mind, but I would guess he sees Apter as an upgrade/ alternative to TC. Similar players as wide strikers. I agree tho about the flexible approach. I expect to see a fair bit of tinkering, especially given our already seemingly long injury list, before we see a settled lineup.

But you don't think NJ would have played him there once in pre season? He had the chance to if he'd wanted to

Here's how he matches Coventry, not much in it, Coventry covers more of the pitch, Taylor is a deep lying playmaker. Coventry better defensive stats, Terry wins more duels marginally.

You were cherry picking data, you ignored Greg Docherty's goals for example which are somewhat significant. I'm surprised that someone who goes to as many matches can't see the bigger picture. Granted Doc was poor in the first quarter/third of the season but it was a new club and maybe he lacked a bit of match sharpness, plus he was playing/learning a new system, possibly the more refined south London air was a factor. But then a lot of players were initially poor last season only to steadily improve. NJ tweaked the set up. In the last two thirds/back half of the season he was significantly better. Anyway, for me it's not about passes completed, tackles made or what he does on the ball, you need to look at what he does out of possession, how a player reads the game etc, this is why data can be a bit of a trap, it doesn't tell you anywhere near the entire picture. Any suggestion that he get dropped in the last half of the season would have been unthinkable.

I also asked for a like for like comparison when TT was playing for Charlton, you've not provided it....

My reason for asking is that different clubs are set up differently, TT was undoubtedly more of a big fish at Northampton than at Charlton, so I'd expect him to see more of the ball there and it might be that their style of play suited him better, that I don't know but they did have to work hard to dig themselves out of a hole and he was a big factor in that. All I remember is that they were utterly hapless when we played them before Christmas and were easily the worst side we played last season and that includes the sides we played in the Vertu Cup. For their fans his loan spell must have been like signing Messi compared to the player he replaced.

I still don't think NJ will be dropping either GD or CC to play him instead. Like I say he's not a bad player, he's just not a NJ style of player, I don't think he fits his system. It's a shame because he has talent.

I don't think I was cherry picking, was just comparing what was highlighted.

Taylor unfortunately doesn't have the data from Charlton to do a fair comparison.

I understand Docherty has a role, was just highlighting that TT is definitely a player that can defend and has stats to back it up.

I don't expect TT to play, just think he has been unlucky not to get a chance, and would be happy to see him cover Coventry where I think he could

I think Tanto will be the alternative to TC, with Kelman the alternative to Godden, though that could be where Apter ends up if RWB doesn't work out.

I can still see us bringing in a RWB, but as a squad player at least to begin with, rather than automatic first choice.

Lazy research from me, but has Apter ever played RWB for Blackpool?
Perhaps cause Blackpool never played with WB ?
So no history or experience in playing as a WB.

Square pegs in round holes.....again 🙄.
I know what you mean. It was so frustrating last season when we put our right back Ramsay at centre back, our winger TC up front and our left back Small at RWB and...proceeded to shoot up the table, finish 4th and get promoted via the Play-offs, losing a grand total of 4 games from the 30 we played once we'd started doing that.
Another belter from our mate Golfie. Season's not even started yet. Lovely stuff
    Shut up you melt.
Golfie, tell us who you don't rate ahead of Saturday. I've got a free £10 bet I need to use and will lump it on whoever you single out scoring a brace

If you don't like what he posts I suggest you just ignore it, rather than this childish nonsense.
No chance, he is firmly on the “pile in on Golfie” bandwagon despite the fact what Golfie said made perfect sense
At the risk of repeating myself, it’s not what he says most of the time, it’s his hilarious ability to be immediately proved wrong, all whilst acting like he’s the oracle.

Anyway, as I’ve said before I wouldn’t have it any other way
To be fair you come across much worse than Golfie
Showed themselves up the other day, doing it again today. I don’t get how a poster on a football forum can get someone so riled up and feel the need to be offensive when it is just so easy to scroll passed things. I’m only commenting on this again because it’s difficult to scroll passed the topic that has taken over the last however much of the thread. It’s boring, can we move on now?
Riled up? Not really. Mocking definitely.

I’m on an anonymous forum posting anonymously. Believe it or not this isn’t how I act in the real world. None of this actually gets to me. It’s an escape from the day to day. I enjoy it on here.

If you’re sad because someone with a strong opinion is being called out on it occasionally then might be worth you taking your own advice and ignoring it

That's pretty pathetic in all honesty.
It is isn't it. Lucky no one knows who I really am huh  ;)
    I know you’re a complete tool
Ah. So 'Pile ons' are only OK if it's you and your chums doing it?

It was pointed out to me that Apter is our RWB. Because that's where he has played all pre-season. So it must be true. The fact we have looked to sign Fukuda and have had a trialist playing there in pre-season as well is obviously just fake news.

    But what do I know...🤷‍♂️.
The trialist RWB came on after Apter was taken off...
  • If we pay a large fee for another player this window, than I have a 16 inch schlong*

*"Charlton Athletic are proud to announce they have signed Joe Scally from Borussia Monchengladbach for a fee of 4.5 million pounds'

Surely not. Just been told the trialist played RCB.

He played RWB once in his last game for about 10 minutes

God forbid you should question anyone in the inner circle jerk on here, Herminator. Only their opinion counts, doncha know?. You are a very naughty boy for getting their knickers in a twist. Well done for rightly not giving a shit, though.
You have prompted some entertaining responses. Gotta love this place.

  • Gawd, we really need the football to start again.

I think it must be pre season nerves why CL members are doing Ryan Innis tackles on each other ?

Just one more sleep 😴 and the Championship season that we have all yearned for over the last 5 years will be here.

Come together and support every player picked by Nathan because it's a big upgrade.
