What Nathan Jones has done this window and since he joined the club is to recruit players to fit a system - defensively we were tighter than a gnat's chuff last season and that will be the case this year although I'm not expecting 26 clean sheets or whatever it was. The defenders we've signed this window have that thin red line you will not get past me feel about them. Out wide he likes a bit of pace and some accuracy when crossing/shooting and everybody must have a bit of physique and be as well organised and possess the same work ethic work as a either Stakhanovite or last year's Sniffer Dog. He hasn't once ventured outside this template in any of the players he has signed.
Does Terry Taylor fit into his playing system? I don't see it, a shame he seems a good bloke and he's not devoid of talent just that he doesn't seem to be a square peg for a square hole. I don't see him scrapping for the ball in midfield in the manner of Coventry or Docherty.
The problem is that any club coming in for him will be League One level and won't be able to match the same wages as we're currently paying him, so it's likely he'll be loaned out rather than sold unless he wants to take a pay cut.
Poor Tezza.
What about goals? I notice you didn't show that stat. Or don't you think goals matter?
Last season, Doc was playing as the box-to-box midfielder. His stats as a holding midfielder might be completely different. Yes, they may be worse, but you don't know that.
I didnt post goals purposely as the original point was that FSLN didn't see Taylor battling for the midfield, his stats show he could definitely do that job.
Sorry but it's a bit daft to ask me if I don't think goals matter, of course they do, that's why I am so sold on Knibbs as all of our other midfielders combined couldn't get 10 between them
I accept that. But you're comparing apples with oranges. Docherty did not play as a holding midfielder last season. So those stats are pointless. It's like comparing TT's stats with Berry's, to prove TT would be useless in the ACM position...

All I did was show Terry Taylors stats compared to a player who I believe doesn't do much defensively. I could understand this argument if Dochertys output with goals was crazy, and that's why he wasn't defending much, but that's not the case, anyway the original point was, TT is a player that gets stuck in, Burton fans have said it, Northampton fans have, and his stats back it up.
I would be fairly comfortable with him being on the bench and being back up to Coventry if that's what he wanted.
Isn't summer rumours related, but I threw together a little compilation of our summer signings, I did have more goals from Kelman, Knibbs and Costello I found, but twitter only allows for 2:20 vids

Here's how he matches Coventry, not much in it, Coventry covers more of the pitch, Taylor is a deep lying playmaker. Coventry better defensive stats, Terry wins more duels marginally. You were cherry picking data, you ignored Greg Docherty's goals for example which are somewhat significant. I'm surprised that someone who goes to as many matches can't see the bigger picture. Granted Doc was poor in the first quarter/third of the season but it was a new club and maybe he lacked a bit of match sharpness, plus he was playing/learning a new system, possibly the more refined south London air was a factor. But then a lot of players were initially poor last season only to steadily improve. NJ tweaked the set up. In the last two thirds/back half of the season he was significantly better. Anyway, for me it's not about passes completed, tackles made or what he does on the ball, you need to look at what he does out of possession, how a player reads the game etc, this is why data can be a bit of a trap, it doesn't tell you anywhere near the entire picture. Any suggestion that he get dropped in the last half of the season would have been unthinkable.
I also asked for a like for like comparison when TT was playing for Charlton, you've not provided it....
My reason for asking is that different clubs are set up differently, TT was undoubtedly more of a big fish at Northampton than at Charlton, so I'd expect him to see more of the ball there and it might be that their style of play suited him better, that I don't know but they did have to work hard to dig themselves out of a hole and he was a big factor in that. All I remember is that they were utterly hapless when we played them before Christmas and were easily the worst side we played last season and that includes the sides we played in the Vertu Cup. For their fans his loan spell must have been like signing Messi compared to the player he replaced.
I still don't think NJ will be dropping either GD or CC to play him instead. Like I say he's not a bad player, he's just not a NJ style of player, I don't think he fits his system. It's a shame because he has talent.

I mean I quite like Docherty but this is kind of the point surely. He's not doing a lot of the challenges/tackling of a defensive midfielder but he's not scoring or assisting that many for an attacking midfielder either.
The question will be if being okay at everything is going to cut it in this league or whether we're better off with a system of specific players doing specific things instead of a jack of all trades.

I think Braziliance is saying...based on those stats, TT would be better Coventry cover than Doc. I don't think he's suggesting we play TT instead of Cov?
The thing with Doc is that he is very positionally disciplined and helps hold our shape well off the ball. You don't get a club record clean sheet total in a season if your midfield doesn't contribute to stop your defence being exposed by being in position.
Slightly confused how Terry Taylor having a decent loan spell at a struggling Northampton side in L1 somehow makes him a Championship option.
We're facing some serious opposition this season. Personally I'd like someone better than Docherty as a starter , never mind someone who hardly played for us in L1
In his club interview with Charlotte, Jones says having spoken to Jim Rodwell literally 40 times a day for most of the summer, he hasn’t spoken to him since the Knibbs deal was done. Suggests our business might be done for now.

I imagine any signing in the next week or so then is someone already "here" in the trialists. No doubt in a fortnight's time they'll be talking again about any more enforcements or if there's outgoings that they need to discuss.

He also said the interview was 3 days ago which is a long time in football
Lazy research from me, but has Apter ever played RWB for Blackpool?
Perhaps cause Blackpool never played with WB ?
So no history or experience in playing as a WB.
Square pegs in round holes.....again 🙄.
I know what you mean. It was so frustrating last season when we put our right back Ramsay at centre back, our winger TC up front and our left back Small at RWB and...proceeded to shoot up the table, finish 4th and get promoted via the Play-offs, losing a grand total of 4 games from the 30 we played once we'd started doing that.
Partly because Small could defend as well as attack, whereas TC could not, so he was put up front. Apter is not a defensive RWB, sorry but true.
So a debate on whether TT should be given a chance to try and cover Coventry has turned into a debate on whether he should be starting ahead of Docherty and how because Apter has never officially played as a RWB despite the fact we dont play traditional wingbacks and he played deeper in a flat midfield 4 for Blackpool than a traditional winger in a front 3 now means we’ve wasted 2M pounds on him. Never a dull day on Charlton life
Standing back a bit, the heated discussion about Apter's role seems to come down to whether you think we have everything we need to make a go of it in the Champ based on our current squad. Why would anybody think that can be the case before a ball is kicked? Because NJ and the recruitment team have finished their work? Who knows that, nobody on this forum for sure. Because Apter has played at RWB in some of the friendlies? Maybe that is because we do not yet have a proper RWB and somebody has to play there. I like to put two and two together and make four. We do not have a proper RWB in the squad at present. Rumours are we are looking for one. In the meantime somebody will play in that position. Good luck to them indeed. But does not take away the need to sign a proper RWB. The weird thing is if/when we do sign a real RWB, those who are insistent that Apter is the man will just go silent because they will know it was the right thing to do. So be it.

I think most of us realise/think that NJ wants a more defensive option at RWB for tougher games but that Apter will play at RWB more often than not as it's the closest thing to his natural position in our current system. Eventually he might shift into playing as a 10 or a hybrid striker role like TC but NJ isn't going to have played him as a RWB in friendlies just to get him on the pitch otherwise Lembikisa would have played there instead of RCB or Asiimwe would have got more minutes.

Small was more of a winger than a right wing back anyway so no change there, I’m probably more excited about Apter than any other player at the moment. Love how exciting and front footed he is.

You can think both. Yes Ramsay and JRC can play there but automatically weakening the midfield and defence in doing so. Is Apter going to be starting in the RWB/RW role when we play a 352 absolutely, but if we’re 1 or 2 goals up with 10 minutes to play I definitely wouldn’t want Apter still there I’d want an alternative wingback who has the more defensive side to the game much like Watson was to Small you need depth and different types of players in every position
