  • Evans through to last 16 beating no 13 seed Michelsen.
Great to see Evans progressing in an event,
Big fan of Evans. Thought he might call it a day when his ranking fell to 217 but he's now back inside the top 150 after some decent performances of late.
  • Raducanu beats Osaka and regains her spot as British no 1.

    Norrie and Evans both out.
  • Great win for Raducanu. Up to 32 now. Found the heat challenging but showed far better resilience

Hopefully will be seeded at US Open

Boulter and Radacanu both in action in Montreal today - ongoing battle for the No 1 British spot.

Norrie plays tomorrow in Toronto  - seeded 31. Fearnley lost yesterday.
  • Emma back down to 42 in the live rankings after a big climb last week. Boutler #40 and Kartal #48 (but not playing this week).

I thought Raducanu was up to 33 https://www.wtatennis.com/rankings/singles announced today
went from something like 45 up to 33 due to Washington semis

Not sure how the live ranking on a Monday can change so much from the rankings only out today - maybe due to points to defend from the Canadian Open last year?

Players lose the points they are due to defend in the latest week hence Raducanu has dropped in the live rankings. She reached the QF of the Citi Open in the corresponding week last year.

The Canadian Open is scheduled for the same week this year.

Yes, I thought so - I recall her losing to Badosa. When she came on court just now, it showed her at 33

They don't show the live ranking - just the ranking at the end of the previous tournament.
  • Comfortable victory for Emma in straight sets.

which is the most recent rankings (announced every Monday) - so they are out of date as soon as they are announced! Back to live 40 now Peyton Stearns up next (tomorrow)
  • Norrie and Raducanu in action today - expecting them both to progress but nothing is guaranteed in tennis.

Peyton Stearns ranking is 37 and her live ranking is 37 - unusual for both to be the same. She is no 32 seed so around Raducanu's ranking
  • Norrie out and Radacanu through in straight sets. Faces Anisimova next - a tough match.
  • Raducanu out in straight sets to Anisimova - outclassed by her. Disappointing performance.
  • Cash and Glasspool through to last 8 of doubles

I didn't stay up to watch it. Sadly it looked v one-sided from the score

Salisbury and Skupski also in last 4.

if both pairs win their semi final could meet in the final.
  • I see Raducanu has yet another coach and it's Francis Roig who was part of Nadal's backroom team. Petchey can't commit to doing the job full time because of his TV commitments so it makes sense to have someone on board who can but if I've read this right the contract is only until the end of the year. Is this yet another of Raducanu (and her dad's) "suck it and see" appointments? This will be her tenth change of coach in her four years and it's almost as if she's trying to find that person to unlock her talent when perhaps the key to doing that is nearer home.

I think both Raducau and her dad, but more her dad are very specific about getting the right fit. Whilst she has had many changes of coach, she gets far too hard a time about it. The one when she won the USO was only ever temporary as he didn't want to go on tour, the Russian a few years back was only on trial, then her coach of a few year before Petchey had to step down because he developed a medical condition and couldn't travel and then Petchey was only part-time/temporary because of his existing commitments. The one before Petchely did work with her for this UK grass season as didn't need to travel overseas

To a certain extent I can understand their concerns - she ramped up far too quickly from only playing 8 hours a week, from when she was doing her A levels then broke though at Wimbledon and then won the US - and it far too much far too quickly and should have been far more gradual. It basically broke her on/off for a few years and she is only just getting a lot fitter and more robust now. I don't know whose fault that was, over-eagerness on her/her dad's fault or a coach pushing her too far too quickly

There's always a reason for it not being a long term commitment though and it's not always circumstances beyond her/her Dad's control. Even now this contract is only until the end of the year. A five months contract, with the backdrop of all these coaches is not a commitment or a recipe for a long term relationship but a stop gap when she really does need stability:
    • Nigel Sears: Worked with Raducanu until July 2021.
    • Andrew Richardson: Coached her to her US Open title in September 2021.
    • Torben Beltz: Hired in November 2021, but parted ways in April 2022.
    • Dmitry Tursunov: Worked with her from July to October 2022.
    • Sebastian Sachs: Coached her from November 2022 to June 2023.
    • Nick Cavaday: Began working with her in January 2024 and stepped down in January 2025 due to health reasons.
    • Vladimir Platenik: A short-term coaching arrangement, lasting only a couple of weeks in March 2025.
    • Mark Petchey: Began working with her in April 2025.
    • Francisco Roig: Just hired.
One coach talked about her being a two-and-a-half-year project project to be on the safe side, stressing how difficult it would be for people to understand that to be the case because of her US Open win but emphasised that her game is still very raw. There is another issue with such arrangements. Any top coach worth their salt, once they recognise that Raducanu/her dad are so "picky" and don't like commitment, will not want to work with her least of all if they are talking about contracts of six months and less.

For these reasons I really do hope that it works out with Roig because one long term coach and one voice in her ear could be the making of her.

Agree with some of that. I'm just caveating several that were beyond her/her dad's control; her dad believed to be the by far largest issue as confirmed by a Charlton fan I had a good chat with at Wembley who has a tennis podcast. Andrew Richardson was only ever going to be temporary as he didn't want to go on tour - she got a lot of unwarranted stick for 'sacking the coach when she won the USO' - which was NOT the case. Platenik was only a trial. She certainly can't be blamed for Cavaday's medical conditional and Petchey was also only going to part-time & temporary
