Mason Burstow - on loan to Bolton from Hull (p53)

1.6 million the reported figure Charlton received from Chelsea for Burstow now seems to have turned into good business as his career stats show 5 goals in 80, pretty dreadful for a striker although I guess he still has time to improve .2

Was stuck out on the wing a bit for Hull in fairness. Will be interesting to see how he does playing up front and at a level he’s good enough to play atMintoHumbugs said:1.6 million the reported figure Charlton received from Chelsea for Burstow now seems to have turned into good business as his career stats show 5 goals in 80, pretty dreadful for a striker although I guess he still has time to improve .1 -
The fact is he left us way too early in his career and it’s held him back . I’m sure his bank balance is ok though.I wouldn’t have him back because I think he hasn’t progressed .3
-
I’d actually disagree. Not coming up through an academy meant a year at Chelsea was actually great for his development. What went wrong is that they pitched him way too high when loaning him out. He wasn’t near good enough for Sunderland at that stage, if he’d gone to league 1 then, I think his career would have gone much betterBedsaddick said:The fact is he left us way too early in his career and it’s held him back . very ineffective today at Stockport in a 2-0 Bolton loss (Mothersille scored Stockport's first, but generally looked wasted playing a s a right winger)0

Sounds like Bolton need a target manLincsaddick said:very ineffective today at Stockport in a 2-0 Bolton loss (Mothersille scored Stockport's first, but generally looked wasted playing a s a right winger)3 -
I watched it. Thought he looked well off the pace and disinterested. Not effective at all.Lincsaddick said:very ineffective today at Stockport in a 2-0 Bolton loss (Mothersille scored Stockport's first, but generally looked wasted playing a s a right winger)6 -
I know we all joke about Ahadme being good for them, one thing you can never pin on him is that he looks disinterested. He will work his socks off.CafcWest said:

Another two goals yesterday, currently top scorer in League One with seven to his name now.17

Some real nonsense in this thread. Burstow is a decent young player - he's still only 22 - and after losing his way a bit after the Chelsea move, is now starting to show what he can do in the right environment, and getting his confidence back.
Was he good enough for Chelsea? No, but you can't blame him for taking the offer.11 -

A useful reminder to us of the need to be patient with our young players. Very few players are a Walsh, an Elliot or a Gomez - most need time to develop. Look at the career trajectories of the likes of Matt Godden and Alfie May, for example. Going further back, Mike Flanagan - who became the best striker outside the First Division - took a few years to really get his game going. We're all (me included) often too quick to write young players off.killerandflash said:Some real nonsense in this thread. My opinion on young players is it mostly comes down to their attitude, ballsiness. Think Jonjo, Bowyer, Gerrard, Solly, Saka, Foden, Lookman, Gomez, Maguire
All immediately behaved like they were meant to be there. So many youngsters look exposed sometimes physically but mostly mentally. Mason for me did exactly the best thing for a young centre forward in getting a few goals early on but its also the worst thing in a way as it sets an unrealistic expectation when in reality the male brain is still developing let alone the senior football brain. Its a lot harder for young strikers than it is for other positions, maybe goalkeeper is comparable.
Mason played in a shit team, it wasn't like he was given decent service to shank chance after chance, he got scraps and then, a bit like Jayden Stockley, he was expected to be a hold up, link up player, a goalscorer and thats just unrealistic. Carl Leaburn also suffered in a similar way by being thrown in every game as he was the only option. For some reason we stitched Joe Piggot up like that too and he never recovered from the Millwall game he was dropped in for2 -

Agree with both of you. Despite regularly seeing players improving through their early to mid 20s I still see our young players being written off with similar comments that they're too inconsistent and make too many poor decisions (that often comes with experience) or not technically good enough (we have reliable senior players who aren't the most technical) etc.Carter said:

Sonny Carey is another good example. Blackpool fans seemed to have a similar opinion to ours of Morgan in that he was too inconsistent. He's only now showing he can compete in the Championship at 24.
On those who behaved like they belonged there I think Fullah is in the mould. Look at his goals in the cup games and the one on preseason, all taken so confidently. It's just difficult for NJ to play him with Carey and Knibbs joining and Berry being one of his senior players.
Good to see it's starting to click for Burstow. I have doubts about him at Championship level, but if he's regularly scoring that'll give him a much better chance of making that step up as goals will buy him time.4 -
If he keeps this up then he'll be recalled by Hull in Jan and we could end up playing against him.2

One of my sons is going out with a very good friend of his girlfriend, they are all meeting up soon.4

He can't be recalled to the Hull team to face us as he's on loan to another club and that loan runs until January.3 -

What was Leaburn’s best goal return in league one? Burstow must be close to that already this season0
-
12 in 35 appearances (18 starts) in 22/23. Burstow has 7 in 12 starts but has already played 50% of the minutes Leaburn did in the whole 22/23 season. Obviously that says something on its own but he’s scoring at a similar rate to Leaburn’s best season. No surprise that Leaburn scored the most goals when we had JRS in the sideCroydon said:What was Leaburn’s best goal return in league one?
