Charlton 25/26 Tactics Thread

Going to try this again as it was a bit more popular last season and with our signings coming through the door we're starting to get a picture for how we might set up. Do we think the signing of Burke moves Ramsay out to RWB? Might we switch to a 5-2-3 at times with TC & Tanto/a new signing flanking a lone Godden/Leaburn in the centre? Will some of the width actually come from Carey as the 10?

Apparently we're going to ring up Luton every Friday night, and find out what tactics they're planning.8
-
I don’t think we’ll move Ramsay out to RWB, at least not from the start of games as our plan A.I think Burke provides competition for Ramsay and Jones, given his fitness record we won’t want to overplay him anyway. I could see him coming on to help us see out games with Ramsay moving to RWB as a more defensive option than whoever it is we sign.I still expect a first choice RWB to come in.6

On a serious note, first game of the season and I expect the team to line up at present
Kaminski
Ramsay - Jones - Gillesphey
RWB - Coventry - Docherty - Edwards
Carey
Godden - Campbell
Subs: Mannion - Burke - Bell - Asiimwe - Anderson - Berry - Dixon - Olaofe - Leaburn- Docherty to still be dropped between now and then
- Asiimwe I'm 50/50 on, depending on Pre-Season
- Maybe Olaofe for Carey, with Tanto and Tyreece flanking Godden?

I think we will go for an inverted goal keeper playing it up into the hole to a false number six.
In possession we will incorporate the offensive players into midfield in a hexagon shape, and out of possession we will go to the rectangle five five.
Under pressure we will just hit it as far as we can and hope someone gets on the end of it.
Do I get the job?5 -
Has Jones ever played 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 before?
Ramsay, Jones, Burke, Gillesphey, Edwards, Bell will all expect decent game time. Plus the two Mitchell's aswell. Will there be times when he plays a four at the back with Jones alongside either Burke or Gillesphey?
He may have to be less rigid formation wise than last season?1 -
I expect he will continue with the 352 because it was defensively sound and most of the players know it inside out now. My biggest concern is that NJ doesn't replicate the width Small offered on the right. Without that, our attacking shape looked pretty awful.3

The aspiration from the club is to do better than only survive, but personally survival will suit me just fine.
An overall strategy is to be the fittest team in the league I reckon, packed with athletic quick robust warrior types in the main. Steamroller rather than fancy technique.
Still aim to keep clean sheets, and to nick goals where we can.
Maybe there will be room for a bit of creativity TC style, and I would like to see a really good set piece taker.
If we get to those magic 50 points soon enough, that would be the time for a bit more experimentation and a bit more expansive football, and the introduction of more of our home grown to see how they get on.
The 50 points I believe ought to be the absolute principle focus.1 -
Smash it forward is my bet.0
-
Pack the defence & hope for 0-0.1
-
To start the season, a packed defence, defensive midfield and pumping long balls up to Tanto hoping he can hold on and let Godden in for the odd goal
We have a very difficult start to the season. I don't care how we play just so long as everyone gets stuck in, is singing the same old song and can squeeze out a few points.
Burke Ramsay Jones Gillesphey Edwards .. Carey Coventry Docherty .. Godden Olaofe
Assuming there are no more signings, which there sure should be0 - Sponsored links:

I think NJ will want us to be even more physical all over the pitch and that will see Berry resigned to a 'game changer' role. As a starter, Berry will prove to be a luxury we can't afford.0 -
Carey can definitely learn the press. What we don’t know about is his movement. Berry made lots of intelligent runs last season that went unnoticed by both our fans and our players, if he can be found more often that would be a great positive. He doesn’t have some of the pace he used to have but he’s very intelligent and still has bundles of energy. Berry also loves getting stuck in in a tackle, think he’ll get a decent run to start the season0

I think Berry is really underrated by our fans, we were much better with him in the team than without, and a lot of his good work without the ball goes unnoticed1 -

Same as last season, keep it tight and don’t concede before HT and then try and nick it in the second half0
-
The links to Galbraith and JRC are making me wonder if we’ll see Jones attempt a version of his box midfield again. Both have inverted a lot when played at RWB so if they shifted inside you would then push Doc (or his replacement) forward into a split 10 with Carey/Berry. This would fit with Carey’s strength drifting wide as it would fill in the gap he’d leave.0
-
Loads of lofted balls down the line, TC and/or Olaofe especially running the channels to help us win throws, second balls and set pieces.
We’ll be called anti-football, non-league, primitive by a lot of opposition fans.
Those playing tippy tappy possession football will be especially pompous, arrogant and angry when we grind out a narrow win off a set piece or after scoring from their mistake at the back.

So a few things have happened since the last time this thread was used. Firstly we signed JRC who NJ appears to view a midfielder, at the weekend we saw something closer to a 3-4-2-1 and the traditional 3-5-2 we've become used to, now it looks like we're likely to sign Apter who has pretty much only played as a winger from what I can see.
I assume that Apter will be converted into a different role like TC did but it's not impossible we play a 3-4-3 at some point either. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see us being a lot less rigid in our shape this season, much more matching up to the opposition like we did against Birmingham at home.
On top of that I have no idea who will play RWB, maybe Apter, maybe Ramsay, maybe NJ is bluffing and it's JRC but it's certainly an interesting question.
Tactically, think we could be in for a very interesting season.1 - Sponsored links:

I do think you’re right that we will potentially see more change than we did second half of this season. Maybe alternating between our usual 3-5-2 and a 3-4-2-1 depending on opposition1

So as it stands I'm expecting a squad of:
Kaminski
Mannion
Maynard-Brewer
Apter
Fukuda
Ramsay
Burke
A.Mitchell
Jones
Z.Mitchell
Gillesphey
Bell
Edwards
Bennett
Enslin
Coventry
Docherty
Taylor
Rankin-Costello
Anderson
Fullah
Knibbs
Carey
Berry
Dixon
Kelman
Godden
Leaburn
Ahadme
Olaofe
Campbell
Mbick
Kanu
Bold is who I expect is first choice
Italic is someone who either hasn't signed, or could be off either permanently or on loan
That's currently 33 players, so could see as many as 8 leave IMO1 -
I live in hope that this year may finally see someone successfully return to the WM formation, with 5 up front.1
-
I was listening to a podcast with the excellent Jonathan Wilson earlier and he was talking about top teams defending counter attacks with a 3-2 block at the back and it made me realise that’s exactly what we do. One benefit of having a coach like Jones is that he can implement more complicated tactical ideas even when playing in L1 last year.
I do think he has an interesting challenge this year. We are coming up against 433/4231 with dangerous wide players a lot more than in L1. I suspect that’s why Bell is playing above Gillesphey, he’s more mobile and can provide better cover to Edwards.0
