I really don’t mind where we’re signing our players from providing they are good players. Although maybe someone needs to tell our Nathan he needs to go on a Luton free diet now!
The way I look at it is NJ has a very particular way of working and what he demands of players , if he wants to bring in another couple of experienced players who he knows their character and knows they'll really benefit the squad then I'm happy to give him the benefit of the doubt.
2 defenders & a goalkeeper. From a team that has suffered back to back relegations. 🙄
And a promotion to The Premier league. Do you ever have anything positive to say?
To be fair, he only played 20 games, averaging 14 minutes of football per appearance that season, was hardly instrumental. It's not like we have signed Doughty or one of their other heavy hitters.
That would be like if we sold Gassan to a League1 side and tried saying he got us promoted to the Championship. Although it is true, he played a part, but the context is relevant.
This is a player with a truly woeful injury record and it's quite consistent. Let's hope we can get him playing, but the smart money says he will feature about the same amount as Dan Potts, unless our medical team can perform miracles.
I know what you’re trying to say but you don’t do yourself any favours with the Dan Potts comparison, a player who played 75 mins in the league for us.
For context, Burke’s minutes the past few seasons have been
- 24/25: 855 (in the Championship relegation), - 23/24: 1663 (in the Premier League relegation), - 22/23: 1307 (in the Championship promotion), - 21/22: 2122 (in a Championship top six side), - 20/21: 2873 (in a League One title campaign with Hull)
Ramsay’s minutes last season were 2656 and Jones played 3112.
Our own point of reference for a crocked player might be Chuks, who over the same period contributed the following amount of minutes per season: 625, 517, 326 (half season), 442 and 1532.
Don't do myself any favours, what? 😂
Think it's already been highlighted that Jones struggles to manage a full season, that's why it isn't Ideal we have signed someone who can't stay fit.
Ditto Ramsay.
My point with Potts is that it was an unambitious signing and not an obvious upgrade. If Luton, Hull and whoever else couldn't fix him, I don't see why we would be any different.
Fingers crossed though ay
I think Burke will very quickly prove to be a good player and contribute far more than Potts ever did. Let's wait and see.
You’ve contributed more than Potts did, in fairness
I was wondering if anyone else saw this! It was my first impression when he signed. I was worried we were going to have debates about whether his legs had gone

Well, contributing more than Potts won't be too difficult, he could manage that just by playing a handful of games to be fair.
Hopefully he delivers the goods, we need better players for this difficult season ahead and he sounds like he has the quality.
You had earlier said “the smart money says he will feature about the same amount as Dan Potts, unless our medical team can perform miracles”.
So either you’re changing your tune or you feel like the bar is on the floor and Burke will struggle to even meet that.
You say above you’re not negative: “All I did was point out what he did and what his record says. If you feel negative about that, then that kind of paints the picture.”
But next post saying “the smart money says he will feature about the same amount as Dan Potts, unless our medical team can perform miracles” is clearly coming from a positive of doubt and negativity.
The only player I can remember you being high on recently is Matt Ritchie!
I’m not concerned at all that they were relegated twice. As we know, a rotten atmosphere ruins most players, so could be that. A terrible injury record isn’t good though.
This bloke will be a starter .. can’t see him coming to be a back up to good
I agree with this but also he will have to fight for that starting place first and prove he's worth it,consistent enough and fit as our defence was the best part of our team last season.
I did feel it was optimistic of NJ to think he doesn't get injured under his management!
On Cawley's substack Jones when interviewed did say we've taken a bit of a gamble with Burke and that we'll have to manage him carefully. Hoping it doesn't turn out to be another Chuks situation but 45 mins so far in preseason is a little bit of a worry given his record.
I spoke to a couple of Luton fans recently and they said he was their best defender. He just couldn't stay avoid injury and has missed three months of football in each of his last three seasons and in four seasons there he never started 25, 15, 20 and 10 games in the league respectively. Perhaps we are just being ultra careful but I'm not sure how, especially in the modern game, you get match fit without actually playing.
I feel like Burke is going to be there for the tough games against high level opposition where we push Ramsay out to RWB and sit Burke at RCB. Games where we feel we can't afford to push too high and are happy to work for a point or nick a goal on the break. A top level insert for game where we feel we'd otherwise be unable to get anything, but not someone to be risked every week. It's not a huge gamble because there's very few people here who wouldn't be chuffed with Ramsay at RCB every week anyway

I cant see it ending any other way. Considering he was with Luton in the prem, youd think they would have had a more than half decent medical team.
He will be used as an impact sub, in difficult games in which the other teams attack is far superior.
May start against the bigger teams, if we feel we need more experience.
we will need to manage his minutes, it’s a similar situation to chucks that he will be effective if fit, hopefully we get more games out of him and he is a little less fragile then chucks

In theory, I agree but whether his body can withstand the rigours of that demand remains to be seen.
Burke arrived fit, passed his medical, but was injured from 45 minutes of football against Dartford. He's been sidelined since 12th July. This isn’t a criticism, and I hope no one takes it as a rant. I'd be delighted to see him return this week and hope to do so!
P.S. No need for anybody to state that he would be a Premier League player if he was always fit, etc.
Comments
With his beard he has similarities to Jackson as well?!

I'm strangely bullish about this year
