Basically, a 10km (ISH) wide chunk of rock/ice is approaching the inner solar system from far outside our solar system at 60km a second. There is no chance that it will collide with Earth. It's only the 3rd one that's even been detected. The interesting part is that the predicted path seems quite close to a optimal route that an intelligent life form would likely decide upon to scout the planets and get close to Earth with the lowest chance of being noticed. Interesting stuff.

If we (the citizens of earth, not me and you personally Matt) have predicted the path, then the aliens haven't really thought it through.
  • Sounds like what I defrosted out of my fridge lastnight.

If they’re an intelligent life form why are they riding on a lump of rock and not in a space ship?
  • I think the OPs intention was for us to imagine more of a surveillance drone type ice-block, rather than a dinghy or lifeboat or spaceship carrying alien lifeforms. Most people are probably used to the idea of drones by now, and probes.
  • Why’s it made out of ice?
  • The closest likely source of an earth sustaining planet is proxima centauri. If alien beings had hitched a ride on a comet travelling at 60km/s, it would take them roughly 21,200 earth years to get here.

I imagine we'd be able to take care of ourselves.
  • Typical, we finally get decent and the world is gonna end

To Aliens with the IQ of a Millwall supporter by the sound of it!
