If we did sign Kelman, Knibbs & Leonard, it would be likely we stay up, compared to what we were faced with before the transfer window opened.
All three would set us back approx 7 million, makes our total outlay around 13-14 million, within FFP for a newly promoted side and would set us up nicely to stabilise as a championship side.
You can assume after 1 successful year of Championship football we would make at least 1 big player sale next season to balance the books a bit.
We can afford losses of 39 million over 3 seasons, worst case scenario we go down and have a line of clubs who would buy all the good players more than likely anyway. Best case scenario we stay up and have a cracking squad who are ready to go for another season, and our club value goes up.
You must speculate to accumulate in football. If these types of players are this openly available and we can afford it, we should.5 -

We're all hoping Kelman signs, not for his footballing skills, but just to see how @ForeverAddickted gets himself out of the tatooist, tackle intact,,,😂😂😂4
-
The Charlton Life doctor would need to check that tatoo with his/her microscope1

Blackpool manager Steve Bruce has claimed that Rob Apter “quadrupled” his wages after his transfer to Charlton Athletic.
The 22-year-old winger made the move to SE7 on Thursday. No fee was disclosed but the deal is believed to be worth in excess of £2million

He was probably getting paid f all… now he’s getting 4x f all3
-
Ron Saunders was a small centre forward but I was amazed at how good he was in the air. He seemed to specialise in the diving header.5

39 million in losses over 3 seasons.
13 million per season.
The above is not the same as spending 39 million over 3 seasons in player acquisition / 13 million per season.3 -
Which is why you then don't spend crazy amounts for the next two, unless you generate more income through a big player sale etc.
You either stay up and your whole squad increases in value and you can balance the books with big sales, or you're down and will likely be able to recover with sales regardless.
What you probably shouldn't do is go up, not take the risk and potentially end up going down and be in poor financial circumstances anyway, like many clubs that have done. We're Charlton Athletic, shouldn't be some yo-yo club with limited potential.
There aren't many succesful business on earth that didn't gain without taking losses to start off with, it's just borderline impossible unless you get very fortunate. You have to spend money to make money.
We are doing well so far in this regard, hopefully more to come with such decent fees being advertised for such quality players that would increase our chances of staying in the league, the number 1 goal.5 -
Have to be careful though, can’t just spend the whole £13m allowed on transfer fees. Promotion bonuses and increased wages contribute too. I am assuming in the next 12 months or so we’ll need to sell someone, hopefully because we’ve had a great season and that player can go for a big fee like Esse did4

Plenty of clubs now look well run and sustainable by taking massive risks and paying a lot of money (Brighton, Bournemouth, Forest, Fulham, Villa etc) and then plenty get bitten on the arse (Derby, Wednesday, Hull etc)
One certainty in football though, is that if you don't spend, you'll either stagnate or drop down the leagues. It is extremely unlikely/borderline impossible now to progress as a football club without competing in the market, whether people like it or not.
But that's enough from me on money, I like the business we are doing and I am happy with it, just pointing out it would be nice if some of these links actually happen as they're very low risk in the grand scheme of football money, and potentially very high reward in the long run.

The important thing is that if (when?) neither of these signings actually come off that we avoid going down the route of thinking the owners aren't willing to spend enough or aren't fully aware of the need to spend.
The deals done so far have shown that we are very happy to spend money IF we think it worthwhile. There's absolutely going to be players we genuinely were in for that we missed out on but the Galbraith situation shows that there's more than JUST money involved in some of those. Similarly while we may very well be after (for example) Kelman we absolutely don't want to get drawn into a bidding war for the sake of it.
Everything I've seen so far tells me there is absolutely a plan and that if we DO miss out on players then there's a plan B.6 -

Everyone who signs up to this forum on the whole do it because they are a Charlton fan, and they want to discuss Charlton. The summer rumours thread is always going to be one of the most active threads in the off season, and naturally that means that people will be drawn to it and lots of views and counter views will be posted and tangents will happen within that. That is just the way it is.
It miffs me to see the same names complain about this each transfer window.3 -
