That second half of the season under Luzon we had an exciting team going forward. When you look at some of the names, Watt, JBG, Bulot, Buyens, Igor (when fit) there were some decent players there.
Looking the line up for that Celtic game versus Barcelona, FOUR future Addicks played for Celtic that evening. Watt and Adam Matthews plus the Charlton legends Beram Kayal and Joe Ledley. Barca had only one former loanee (Alex Song) and instead had to make do with Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Alba, Mascherano, Pedro etc15 -
A little bit of revisionist history here. The managers were all frustrated by his lack of effort on the training ground and his performances on the pitch generally didn’t live up to the talent he had. He was a personality though which guess endeared him to fans4

Perhaps his career peaked with that goal against Barcelona, some players spend years building up to their peak, others do it in reverse.6

A fun player for us in a dark period. Always enjoyed watching him play.3

One of my earliest memories of him was appearing on Soccer AM, when he had the aloof and kingly manner of a man that had been capped one hundred times by his country, played regularly in the PL and picked up a couple of UCL titles into the mix! I think he'd played three or four time for Arsenal in the Rumbelows cup at the time, so had delusions of grandeur beyond belief.
He just kept saying 'Dench' the whole time, and name-checking the loftier members of the Arsenal squad, and generally across as a bigger bell-end than Tim Lovejoy which in retrospect may have been his biggest football achievement.4 -

Interesting point Guinness and despite having a polar opposite personality to Michael Chang and Emma Raducanu* who both won slams at 17 and 18 years old respectively at the beginning of their tennis career's which was the peak for Chang and very likely for Raducanu.
* Only 22 but Emma is a long way behind the top players now.2 -
I guess he is a complex character, for want of any other reasonable phrase. He obviously genuinely loves the game, unlike Lyle Taylor, but again unlike Taylor, I have to reluctantly conclude that things got in the way of him making best use of his undoubted talent. The dizzying story of the sheer number and spread of clubs he signed for is evidence of that. For sure he came to us at a bad time, but his performances didn’t really improve anywhere else.I really wanted him to be a success for us. He has interesting things to say there, but they spill out in a jumble, something like his performances on the pitch.4

Completely forgot Kayal signed alongside the woeful Hemed.

Kayal had a decent CV but only got on the pitch 6 times for CAFC and we didn't unfortunately get the Celtic and Brighton best version of Beram Kayal.0 -

Apparently Blackburn get credited as his club when he obtained his full cap Scotland.
Iirc he was only on loan there. What is the protocol re Full Caps and loan clubs? Surely we should be able to claim it as well.0 -

Officially, his cap isn’t recognised by the club as one earned whilst a Charlton player so doesn’t count towards our tally of internationals. As a result, he isn’t added to the International Role of Honour board at The Valley.
As Richard says, in the same vein, we claim loanees’ caps for players who play for their countries while they represent us, so you couldn’t have it both ways in that sense.0 -

There’s no committee needed for this particular issue to be fair as the policy has been in place for a decent amount of time now and will be understood internally (in theory!).shirty5 said:
