You do realise players can improve, especially younger players? The Famewo we would be signing now is a much better player than the one we had years ago. He’s established himself at championship level, exactly the kind of signing we need to be makingAberystwythAddick said:Not writing it off and I know he was here under completely different management and ownership. Because the latter are in their 30s and have been marooned in L1/L2 since leaving us while Famewo is mid-20s and has been playing in the Championship for the last 2 seasons.AberystwythAddick said:Not writing it off and I know he was here under completely different management and ownership. I guess we'll need to avoid Maatsen for the same reason if we were linked?
Really dont want us going after Gomez / Konsa / Lookman given how bad things were under Roland2 -

No I don't disagree and you are right! But of all the criticisms levelled at Mitchell inherent pace isn't his major one in my opinion especially when you consider that gillesphey is glacially slow. Obviously gillesphey has other qualities but that was what I was getting at. His other qualities are the issue more than the pace itselfNabySarr said:
Jones plays in the middle where pace is a lot less important. Mitchell playing on the right he will end up 1v1 against wide forwards, if you look at some of the attackers we will be up against next season, you don’t want any of them running at Alex Mitchell!LTKapal said:I don't know where this Mitchell is slow nonsense has come from, he's not blistering fast but he's certainly not slow. From memory he's quicker than marginally quicker than Jones and slower than Ramsay... Other complaints on him are valid and I won't comment on but this pace thing is rubbish. If Mitchell stays then it would probably be as Jones backup in the central role, but personally think he will either leave or see very few minutes in league games.1 -
The thing with Gillesphey is he has improved his positioning to cover for the fact he isn't the quickest. Mitchell may be able to do that too but we haven't seen the evidence yetLTKapal said:

Not saying he hasn’t improved, but we should be looking forward not back! We’ve been burnt before resigning players. Just think it would be refreshing to see new faces for a new era.NabySarr said:

The 99/00 team stormed the Championship that season as we only lost Danny Mills from the side thay had previously got relegated.DamoNorthStand said:Numbers is obviously important to a point, its more about quality in for me.
5/6 sounds ok tbh. If we get players in who genuinely impact the first XI.
Remember when we got promoted to the Prem in 99/00. We really only added Jensen, JJ, Kish.... plus Bartlett and Fish during the season. But they impacted and added something.
We are so off putting a 20 man squad together that can see us stay up next season its worrying.
The back 5 is pretty good & although we wont keep 20+ clean sheets this time around I have faith that they will keep enough to keep us competitive.
But then it all falls down.
Imo we need a playmaker in midfield (maybe we have one in our one & only signing so far ?) and a couple of wide men (one to replace Small and one cover for TC). Then we need at least 2, if not 3 strikers to replace Aneke, Ahadme, Kanu & Mbick.
For me we need at least 6 new players, and more like 8 or 9.
Probably wont happen. But if it does it needs to happen within the next 2 weeks. No point going to a training camp with half your starting 11 missing.
So hoping for the same this season. Because my mind always goes back to the Ben Reeves "is he, isnt he" signing. In the end he signed just as the season kicked off, didnt have a proper pre-season and he/we suffered for it all that season.
Sign or dont sign, I dont care.....just dont fuck us about.2 -
He doesn’t really add anything though that’s the point, he’d be a bit part player. Hes no better than what we already have in the club, we should be aiming higherking addick said:

Alex Mitchell reminds me of Matt Taylor from the Powell title season, who also started the season well but lost his place as it progressed, and hardly played in the Championship.
Both good characters, but slightly limited as footballers to prosper at a higher level.5 -
For starters he played a season and quarter he was injured most of last season, secondly he’s no better than what we’ve got already. We have championship defenders already. Again we need to aim higher than those already here if we want to achieve anythingNabySarr said:

We can't compare ourselves to Millwall. That will be a bitter pill to swallow for some, but remove the rivalry and they are on a different level to us on a skill level. Consistent top half championship side since 2019. Lowest finish 13th in six seasons. What isn't good enough for Millwall, isn't necessarily not good enough for us.NabySarr said:
The wide forwards that play in the championship coming up against Alex Mitchell 1v1 is a scary prospect. He isn’t quick or agile enough to play in the championship as a wide centre back. He is better suited to the middle but he’s not dominant enough because he’s not as big as you probably need to be for middle of a back 3. Millwall came to the same conclusion that he wasn’t a championship player, he’s a solid league 1 defender and nothing more. Was barely getting a game for us in league 1 and I’d be surprised if he is still here in SeptemberBraziliance said:
He is no quicker or slower than any of our centre backs of any significance, I am not counting Ramsay as he is a full back by trade and more of an athletic profile.Swisdom said:
Mitchell’s pace - or lack of - is one concernBraziliance said:I also still have faith in Alex Mitchell if he gets his chance, think he is slightly underrated on here.
We will be up against it most games in the Champ, especially away, and he is very sound defensively. We will need pure defenders in certain games (Sheff United, Norwich, Southampton away etc) can forget about all that playing sexy football malarkey.
Secondlyhis passing is poor
and he’s not brilliant in the air despite his size
It may be that league one is his level. I suspect a pacy striker from the championship will make him look very silly. I hope I’m wrong because I like him as a guy, but I just think he is too limited for championship football
His passing is almost the same as any other defenders at Charlton, marginal differences, particularly Macca and Jones. It's actually becoming a bit of a myth that he can't pass, and I think people are saying it because that is what they hear other people say.
Finally you don't need pace when you are sitting deep at Sheffield United, Leicester, Norwich, etc, you need tough defenders who won't get bullied. He will be a good back up option and with him being young, has time to improve.
I'll add our defenders passing metrics in a spoiler just so you can see how close it is, but his bad passing is genuinely well over talked/mentioned. Similar passing stats to most centre backs who aren't renowned for 'ball playing ability'.
Anyway it is the rumours thread, point was with our limited funds, I am not too bothered about central defenders.

Also those passing stats don’t really show much. For example Gillesphey is asked to play a lot of long passes with higher risk so will lose the ball more. He isn’t anywhere near as capable with the ball as Jones and in particular Gillesphey are, that’s obvious to anyone that’s watched them play. He doesn’t make progressive passes like Jones and Gillesphey can, can’t bring the ball into midfield. He’s very limited with the ball, that doesn’t mean he loses it loads (though there’s definitely a few examples where he has and it’s cost us) but he’s doesn’t do much with it compared to all our other options
We are in the same league now, but in terms of squad quality we are far apart imho.
The passing stats showed a similar amount of longballs to Lloyd and similar succession rates. The glaring difference is Lloyd is just a better defender/player.
All of these comments about his pace, range of passing etc are wide of the mark imo. He is a no nonsense centre back, we wouldn't have a defender in his early 20s who was quick, could pass and could defend as he would be gone fairly quickly. I don't understand your comment either about "Obvious to anyone that watched him play". 1 of the 134 son, watched him play plenty. I am not saying he is as calm as Jones on the ball, or as technical as Gillesphey, I am saying he is nowhere near as bad as to be made out to be, and now has an undeserved stigma around him.
The reality is, he may end up out on loan as I can't see him wanting to sit on the bench for a significant amount of time again, but he has time on his side and with his stature and attitude there is potential there. If he is a back up option in the Champ where we will need pure defenders, that might be fine. Budget better spent elsewhere.2 -

Also I wouldn't panic just yet. Looking at all the activity in the Championship so far, quite a few clubs have made the odd signing and some none at all.

He can 100% add something. Not saying he is the be all but he has more experience in the champ than our current back 3. Does it mean he is better than them? Time will tell but he can very much add decent squad depth.AberystwythAddick said:

Wasn’t a dig at you not watching him (I am also one of the 134 so seen more than enough). Was more that those stats really don’t mean anything when judging how good a player is with the ball at their feet, and actually watching live will tell you a lot more than those stats. Passing accuracy percentages are pretty useless as a measure for how good someone is with the ball at their feet. They just show that they don’t give the ball away much but that is really the bare minimum expectation. Progressive passes and carries would be a much better measure but not a widely available stat for fans at league 1 levelBraziliance said:

He will go on loan to mid-table league 1 I think, even teams at the top of that division will want better0 -
