I found it hard to believe myself & very worrying (if true). I merely stated what was said by NJBraziliance said:
To be honest I have always found that hard to believe. Unless you do what Birmingham did, it's very difficult to sign championship players in League 1.charltonbob said:
Didn't NJ say that we were fishing in the same pond which ever division we were playing in next season ? Of course as you say there could have been a rethink.carly burn said:
My guess. We had a rethink.Scoham said:So where are the other 3 we were promised were lined up and would definitely get done? 😉
Don't doubt they weren't at an advanced stage but imo they would've been L1 standard. Carey was the only one to be deemed up to the new level
It would be a bit daft by any club to make signings based on whether they'll be playing in a different league. The playing field changes completely.1 -
Surely the confirmed links to players like Offiah and Galbraith show this?Braziliance said:
If we had 4 players lined up and Carey was the best of the bunch, our scouts need a performance meeting. You'd like to think we are identifying a higher/more consistent standard of player now. For every Kayne Ramsay (punt) you get between 5-10 duds.carly burn said:

Carey is a punt at this stage.
I suspect that Carey was probably on our potential list of players to sign if we'd stayed in league one, and despite getting promoted they've decided that as he's free and only 24, he's one worth signing even though we've gone up a league.9 -

Even if we'd stayed in League One I thought we were signing players for the Championship so in that regard they surely feel that Sonny Carey can step up.0 -
Didn’t Jones literally say the list we are working from is the same whether we were in the championship or not.
Just that being in the championship will make it easier.9 -
Of course, but until we get these deals over the line, I will always be sceptical.Chris_from_Sidcup said:

The last time a popular Charlton manager said we are rich and he will be backed, it didn't happen. As a result of years of bullshitters, I go by actions, not words. Bowyer said this in 2020:
If we do end up signing a handful of quality players like Galbraith and Keillor-Dunn etc, and our squad looks much improved ready for a go at the Championship, I'll put my hands up and say my doubts were wrong, until then, I am expecting a disappointing summer window, like most seasons.
Will still back the team either way and enjoy the season, but that's my thoughts on it all.5 -
He did say that yes. Whether or not its completely true is maybe more questionable I think. Maybe not that we had two completely different lists but potentially players that were optimistic targets in L1 become more realistic in Championship - Galbraith for example might be more open to a move if we're a Championship side.FishCostaFortune said:Didn’t Jones literally say the list we are working from is the same whether we were in the championship or not.

So we're still looking at the same players but our targeting and priorities have maybe changed around.0 -

Interested to hear why you find it hard to believe. Why do you think he would lie about it, and what does he gain from doing that, when he could have given a non-committal answer instead?PWADDICK said:

Has anything he has said about transfer processes in previous windows led to you thinking he would just lie?
I remember many posters saying he lied about wanting a thinner squad in January, and that he was covering for the ownership group - but he has been very clear, even at the end of the season, that it was what he wanted.3 -

Comparing the current ownership to anything Matt Southall promised is absolutely wild. The current owners have put their money where their mouths are to appoint NJ, Will Abbot, Dane Murphy as high calibre appointments. Hardly think NJ is signing that big new contract if he's been told by the owners that he's shopping in Poundland for freebies, I doubt we'll have a top half budget and smash our transfer record but there will be a good budget there and then it's down to Chapple and NJ to get to work and do the hard sell to players on why sign for us.
Not concerned at all this early in the window , the whole championship seems on a go slow signing wise. Probably not helped by the U21 Euros, CWC going on.32 -

Certainly not anywhere near being "in the know", but have every faith in Nathan getting in the players he feels he needs based on how things progressed and the season finished last year, subject to the budget of course.
The names mentioned so far on this thread sound like a good starting point, sure something will be announced soon, and certainly hope we will see a few new faces when we land in Slovenia for the pre-season...COYR2 -
Because we shouldn't be in the market for players who want want to sign for a league 1 club, while trying to not be relegated from the championshipCallumcafc said:

Like Lloyd Jones, Conor Coventry, Kayne Ramsay, Macaulay Gillesphey, Matt Godden and Josh Edwards? Those sorts of players?shine166 said:

Has Dane Murphy taken his position yet ?0

Nothing to do with rumours but I have got to say I think there is a genuine lack of realisation of how much players and our players actually earn. £8k a week for example is not a lot of money in the Championship.
I know that Stockley for example was on a very decent wage when he was here, not got the specific amount, but it is sure higher than anyone would have guessed at on this site.

Personally don't think it is that wild. It is just two different personalities/viewpoints. I am difficult to convince/a pessimist/ glass half empty type, then you have the opposite who are more open to giving people a chance.MarcusH26 said:Comparing the current ownership to anything Matt Southall promised is absolutely wild. I will never forget how much respect Katrien had on here and Southall, I always thought they were worms. Not having a pop at anyone who did like those two, but I knew something was off immediately. Sometimes you believe what you want to believe.
Lee Bowyer was a no nonsense credible character, just like Jones, yet he still believed what wasn't true.
I am not saying they're con men like Southall, far from it, I just don't and have never believed we will get the financial backing we might need. They have even said themselves we are a year ahead of where they expected us to be. How can a club who are a Championship side historically be above projections being in a League we historically belong in? Statements like that make me sceptical of the ambition. And the whole talk of being clever to avoid FFP utilising the academy which translates in my book to "don't expect us to spend much money".
It is very early doors and like I said, I would be delighted to be extremely wrong as I want to see Charlton do well more than my judgment be correct. I am just expecting a disappointing window.

If you read it that way. The way I think he meant was we aim high for players whatever league we’re in, but we’re more likely to get those highest up our list if we’re in the Championshipshine166 said:

The club said there’d be an interview with him once it was confirmed so I would guess either not yet or only recently.ShootersHillGuru said:Has Dane Murphy taken his position yet ?0 -
I know his appointment was subject to EFL clearance but with his employment record I would have thought that would be a formality. Perhaps the EFL are all on holiday or only meet to discuss such matters every ten years. Maybe Dane is on holiday.Scoham said:

I am surprised so many people think Macca is up to Championship standard. Plymouth didn't and neither do I. The fear is, he will drag us deeper against quicker forwards, defence will be isolated from midfield, and them from attack, undermining our press and letting teams waltz through our ranks of three.8
-
Another thing to consider is the timing of Chapples appointment.
Not the greatest if I'm honest
No idea how these things work but what time has he had to look at the original targets? Has he poo poo'd some of them?
I'm assuming he knew for a while that he was going to get the job but as he was still working at Luton I'm sure there were restrictions on the work he could do for us ..even if he knew he was going.
And what of his own targets for us. If they are players that he identified during his time at Luton would that not cause problems if he tried bring them here?

8k is probably an average championship wage. However, considering Carey’s profile of being a free agent and being a promising age 8k really isn’t much money for a player like thatSage said:Nothing to do with rumours but I have got to say I think there is a genuine lack of realisation of how much players and our players actually earn. £8k a week for example is not a lot of money in the Championship.

Well that didn't happen in the whole second half of the season, and going a step up doesn't necessarily mean every player is going to be quicker, in fact that's usually an attribute players lower down the leagues have more of as it covers deficiencies in other aspects of their game.Gisappointed said:I am surprised so many people think Macca is up to Championship standard. Gillesphey showed towards the end of the season a great positional awareness that meant he rarely got caught in a foot race with forwards15 -
I think we need to see how this week and next week plays out, I think it was Cawley’s podcast where it was said the market should get moving during those two weeks?carly burn said:Another thing to consider is the timing of Chapples appointment.

The club are saying that they had a plan and in the plan we had budgeted to get promoted next season.2 -
It is estimated that Championship forwards on average are 6-12% quicker than League 1 forwards. Yes I googled this, no I am not sure how true it actually is 😂Gisappointed said:I am surprised so many people think Macca is up to Championship standard. Plymouth didn't and neither do I. It isn't as far as any us know unless we are all in contact with Championship players, the publicised data says otherwise and the Millwall fan who was blocked presented this.Crispywood said:

Apologies to bring up an already covered topic, it's just like a moth to a flame when someone underestimates Championship wages.
