Why would anyone buy now when they can wait a month with the money sat in their own account. Even if they were really excited by the game at Wembley, is holding a credit card sized piece of plastic five or six weeks earlier really that important if it is no cheaper now than just before the start of the season. The numbers buying tickets may rise a little nearer the start of the season and may go up if we make decent signings between now and then.
The upside is the cash in your own account, the downside is having a lower chance of having your preferred seat if you like a popular area.
So some will buy early for very good reasons, and some will buy later for very good reasons.

Renting, same price as I'm paying now, save £60 on council tax and £300 on travel, and cutting travel time to work in half.
Have to agree that sales are at low end of expectations. Living in Bexleyheath my group are lucky we can make home games irrespective of when they are. One benefit of fewer season ticket holders is that it should be easier for us to get away tickets 😇

Now, as it happens, I bought my tickets before the final, so I'm not affected by the increase. But I know poor comms, poor "customer" engagement and questionable commerciallity when I see it.

Indeed. But the difference is they are trying to convert non ST to ST holders for the Championship.
It being a step up from League One isn’t the compelling factor they think it is.
But selling a PL season ticket will need far less effort.
The club have not done this well and there is no need to try and defend them.
