To add competition for a place in the team seems to be the reasoning, as in not a guarantee of an automatic starting place.

I think Carey was brought in to start. More combative than what we have and scores goals. Jones can’t say that of course because it would be disrespectful to those he’ll be competing with.jose said:To add competition for a place in the team seems to be the reasoning, as in not a guarantee of an automatic starting place.1 -
Think this is a good signing and at the right age too.1

Expect our team to be the sum of parts again rather than being carried by 1 or 2, so looks decent enough, Championship experience, driving and with an eye for goal. What’s not to like…0

Anyone who calls the deepest midfielder 'the 6' is an absolute melt. European woke nonsensecantersaddick said:
Lol what are you on about? People under 30 use position numbers to distinguish distinct roles and types of players all the time. Particularly distinct midfield roles. The usual 3 aree 6,8,10. 6 being your deepest midfielder either a Dobson type defensive Mid or a Coventry style ball winner and passer. 8 is your box to box runner and 10 your attacking mid.jimmymelrose said:
But it means nothing now. A 10 this, an 8 that. Does anyone under 30 have any idea about what that even means? The Red Robin said:

Numbers mean sod all. If they did then Sweaty Balmer would have played in goal one season.Southbank said:
Well who knows, but a ball carrier is an 8, not a 10. We will soon know either way.cantersaddick said:
I think the other way around fella.Southbank said:That's our 8, now we need a 10
Even back in the 80s when I started going, these numbers you refer to weren't totally respected. Tell me for example where a 4 or a 6 plays?
In old money 442 the 4 and 8 were the CM and 6 was a CB with 10 as the pacey striker. However as football has evolved (no one plays that way anymore) so have the roles and the descriptions of them.18 -

More a fan of the Argentine convention of calling them a 4?NabySarr said:

We should play 4-4-2, route one, four big lads at the back, two hard men box to box midfielders, two wingers on their correct sides getting chalk on their boots and a big man little man combo up front.NabySarr said:

Start the game with crunching tackles on the opposition captain, best player and hardest player to show them we mean business.

Sounds good to me - that’s how our vets team play 😂Scoham said:

I don't think this will be the last midfielder we sign this window so for that reason I expect Jones to be named captain for next season as Docherty may well nt be a regular starter3

Wouldn’t surprise me. Perhaps that would leave Docherty as competition/cover for Coventry and a new box to box CM, rather than us signing another DM.blackpool72 said:I don't think this will be the last midfielder we sign this window so for that reason I expect Jones to be named captain for next season as Docherty may well nt be a regular starter0 -
from the highlights i wouldn't be surprised if he also sometimes takes on Small's rolecantersaddick said:More of a 10, certainly in terms of what Jones wants from a 10. But can also cover 8. Expect him to be completion for/learning from Berry but doesn't rule out another CM coming in to compete with Doc.

1 GK ... Bolder
2,3 Full backs ... Humphrey, Reid
5,6 Centre backs ... Miller, Shirtliff
4 Defensive midfield (centre half-back) ... Peake
7,11 Wingers ... Lee, Stuart
8 Attacking midfield (centre half forward) ... Walsh
9 Centre forward (Big man) ... Leaburn
10 Centre forward (Big man's side-kick) ... Crooks
After that it's just a case of pushing the magnets around so with our formation in the second half of the season the 4 dropped back with the 5 and 6 and the 2 and 3 were pushed forward as half-back flankers.
TC generally stayed out wide left (11) then the 7 and 8 operated in centre midfield, the 10 was centre-half forward, supposedly linking between midfield and attack, and 9 was the sniffer dog.
Easy peasy!

Wonder if they'll do what we did with Pearce and Solly (?) a few years ago.blackpool72 said:I don't think this will be the last midfielder we sign this window so for that reason I expect Jones to be named captain for next season as Docherty may well nt be a regular starter
When we had "Club" Captain so Docherty wont feel dropped, and then Match Day Captains with the likes of Berry, Jones and Godden taking that responsibility at times.0 -
I need to clarify, having LOL'd this, that I am doing so cos it's funny and not out of disagreement (as is often the reasoning for a LOL).NabySarr said:

I think it's a sign of the game evolving without me though and for that reason I don't like it. CDM. CM. CAM. Stick to Championship Manager ffs1 -
Given that Doc and Berry are on £8k+ a week, its hard to classify him as a starter unless one of the above are moved on. Cant imagine at 24 he will be on better money.jose said:To add competition for a place in the team seems to be the reasoning, as in not a guarantee of an automatic starting place.1 -
Interesting … if that’s correct, and according to the Preston fan their average wage is 10k, perhaps we’re not so far off after all.Gisappointed said:

Agreed. I’m just wondering if our wage bill is not as far from the championship average as had been assumed.ShootersHillGuru said:

If the average is £10k I don’t see how we won’t at least be close. Players like Berry, Docherty and Jones must have been on good L1 wages at least, so £5k+ as a minimum, probably a bit more. Add in promotion increases and they must be there or near enough I’d imagine.stonemuse said:

I’ve always been of the belief that established league 1 players are generally on between £4 and £8k and championship £8- £15k. Then u have the premier league drop outs / outliers which can skew things2

You could hoist one of those up the main mast on the Cutty Sark. Wouldn’t want to wear one on a windy day.Wait till the tracksuits come out.

Bellingham wore #22 as he was a combination of a 4, 8 and 1010
