I don’t even want to think about losing but considering how far we’ve come in four or five months , in the cold light of day , a week or so after a defeat , it must be seen as a good season . But don’t worry , it ain’t happening.
Will be gutting but we need to keep on keeping on. Both times after we beat Sunderland we came straight down while they went up. I’m just going to cling on to that as I am a bit in the Ooh Aah camp of thinking by regression to the mean we will lose this one.
We certainly are due a play off final defeat given we're 3-0 in them! We must be up there in number of Final wins (3), still unbeaten after 3 and a win-loss difference of +3 i'm sure someone has stats out there.
But maybe Palace's cup win is the negative to offset another possible win?
Lack of promotion from League One is failure. Full stop.
Annoyingly Orient are the one team I didn't want to play in the play offs, would have rather played Reading or Stockport. At.their place I thought we were second best for 90 minutes, even though they were missing 2-3 key players. It will be a very tough game.

The first half at Orient was all ours. They were lucky Pratley didn’t give us an own goal and somehow Berry missed another chance that was easier to score than miss. Could quite easily have been 2-0 up at HT.
Can also remember TC and Small getting a lot of joy down the wings much like Stockport did over the two legs which is what gives me hope but do agree it will be a very tough game.
Reading we have faced 3 times under Jones and not scored a single goal they seem to have our number so glad we avoided them and Stockport would have beaten us on pens if it was us and not Orient.
I think at the start of the season, and even 5 months into the season, most people would've seen the play offs as a big improvement on last seasons shambles.
But to now be in the final against a side we've beaten twice in the league, who have a much smaller budget and have 4 of our cast offs in their squad, not winning would have to be viewed as a huge failure.
I personally think league one will be tougher next season, as the 3 sides coming down will all be strong, and the likes of Reading/Bolton/Huddersfield will surely improve. So if we don't win next Sunday then who knows when we'll get a better chance.
We don’t win and most of this side will not be here next season, we’re not as flush as some think we are and it’s back to the smaller crowds and this shitty league please let us get out and stay out I’m fully aware that if we did get up it would be a survival job next season.

This is what some forget. If we don’t go up it’s not just a case of having another go with the same team. We’d lose some good players and what does Jones do if Cardiff give him a shout at any point?
Bearing in mind Birmingham and Wrexham spent their way to the top two, then top six is the next best thing. Then it’s the lottery of the play-offs. So in the unlikely event we lose on Sunday, I wouldn’t see that as failure, and I’d be betting on top two next season.

I don't think anyone would deny any of that tbh. But there’s always a subjective view when it comes to whether you think a play-off final place is acceptable, considering all the factors. I get the feeling a lot of people would’ve taken that outcome at the start of the season — definitely around October or November.
The facts are, we need to kick on now. Facing another season in League One would be hugely disappointing. But looking at the bigger picture, this season has been a vast improvement on last season. So, by that same logic, if we’re still in League One next season, anything less than automatic promotion should be seen as a total failure imo
I think somewhere amongst the amorphous mass of Charlton Life verbiage I said given previous seasons top 10 would be success. From where we are now the progress we have made, without promotion would be muted success.
If we don't go up it will be because of how the cards are dealt by the footballing gods on the day. Orient will not be a pushover and will relish being the little East End Club.
Total success will be determined by a win and hopefully that's what we will get.
I've given you a like for using the word Verbiage.
To be honest, I think we should cross that bridge if we come to it. From watching on the TV it seemed like Thursday was pretty much a wave of positivity from start to finish so let's not start thinking about defeat until it's actually staring us in the face after 90minutes, 120 minutes or penalties. (I appreciate the irony of me saying this). There's plenty of time to worry about the consequences of losing later on, let's not buy trouble unnecessarily now.
Of course I’ll be gutted but I think top six was something that’s been achieved by Nathan Jones a year ahead of time. I was expecting to be challenging top six but falling just short. To get there and into the final is an achievement in its own right and yes defeat will be a failure on the day and a tragedy to have gone so close, but in the big scheme of things I think the season will have been a success and the platform to challenge top two next.

We lost our 2 best players last season and became a better team, the need to evolve is constant in football. The point here is invalid.

First time I've seen it used on Charlton life.
Just you wait for the delight of someone unveiling Antidisestablishmentarianism...
Possibly in connection with a tangential argument/discussion arising out of the vaguely current Asiimwe kerfuffle.

Verbiage and amorphous in the same sentence is Suzie Dent porn 🧐
League One is a failure all the time for a club with our historical placing in the football pyramid . We have been relegated in to it 6 times and the longest time to get out in the previous 5 attempts was 3 seasons .... if we go up it's taken 5 ... a complete load of wank

Depends on how you define failure, what perspectives you are considering etc.
A loss next weekend would be highly disappointing. And we probably would lose two or three good players off the back of it.
But - we lost Dobson and May last season, and still improved as a team. No reason why it can’t happen again. Uncertainty over replacements is understandable but we did alright this season didn’t we?
As Nathan Jones talks about, no matter where we are, we are always looking for year on year improvements. This season, in perspective, is already a big improvement over the previous two or three years.
Quite simply it is a must win for me, Yes the season has been an improvement, but that in terms of where we should be, and how much we have lost fans/support and confidence seems a measure of how much we have slipped down the league's in my opinion.
I would also expect the board to back the manager with additional funds to buy 4-5 players, and of course review our squad numbers. Look how Portsmouth have struggled this year, after winning the league by a country mile last year, the same way as Birmingham.
We cannot expect to go up as some sort of divine right, and Orient, despite having a few ex Charlton players will not be a roll over.
The focus to me is how the board, and team expect to stay up in the Championship, and strengthen the team, develop the academy, and build on 'improvement' this year.
The job is not done, or even half done. If the board stall at investment god help them if they have aims to progress further. That will take investment, planning, and courage to grasp the challenges. I expect to win, I hope to win, but `I am too old to change clubs now!.......
I've got to be honest, I don't see us top2 next season, or rather it was more likely this season.
Luton coming down are loaded, Plymouth probably better equipped to go straight back up, if Cardiff pull their finger out they could be a problem.
Stockport are loaded and a good side, Wycombe have rich owners, all the sides coming up, look more of a test than the sides coming down.
You expect the likes of Barnsley, Rotherham and Bolton to sort their shit out. Reading new owners and always have loads of quality.
I think next season looks a far harder test than this season without the obvious anomaly of Birmingham City.
I don't want anything to do with this league. It will be harder to be promoted next season than stay up in the champ imo. Just a hunch.
Agreed.
Luton Town and Plymouth Argyle will be better than Wrexham imo. And if Cardiff City sort themselves out, they will be too. Bolton Wanderers, Rotherham United, Blackpool, Barnsley, Peterborough United and Huddersfield Town will all be better (again, imo). You can't discount Stockport County or Wycombe Wanderers either.

Millwall, QPR, Orient
If we lose, that would make us the 11th ranked team in London
