MATCH THREAD: Charlton Athletic vs Burton Albion - Saturday 3rd May 2025 - 3pm Kick-Off

Well here we are, the last game of an enthralling season with it's high's and low's, but definitely we are finishing the season very much on the up, and on a lovely sunny afternoon we welcome Burton Albion to The Valley, Burton have secured themselves another year in league one, and will no doubt give us a good game today being relaxed and content.
We go into todays game looking for another win to try and secure a 3rd or 4th place and a home second leg in the playoffs, but that is very much not within our own control, but no doubt the team will want to give us a good feeling going into the playoffs with a nice clean sheet win eh, anyway we will see where we are come 5pm today.
Asked for an update on the team news front, Nathan Jones said: "What I have to do now is prepare the squad so that we can have a successful play-off campaign. That's the most important thing, so whatever I do on the weekend will be geared to making sure that the team are right at it for the play-off games."
We've met on 12 previous occasions winning seven, the Brewers three and the remaining two meetings resulting in draws, Conor Coventry netted in a 1-0 triumph for Charlton in the reverse fixture back in November.
So, here we go...Ashley Maynard-Brewer, Alex Mitchell and Alex Gilbert will start for the Addicks today as Nathan Jones makes three changes to his team.
The trio replace Will Mannion, Lloyd
Jones and Karoy Anderson in the starting XI for the final game of the
regular season at home to Burton Albion.
Kayne Ramsay, Mitchell and Macaulay Gillesphey will start in a back three in front of goalkeeper Maynard-Brewer.
Tennai Watson and Josh Edwards will operate as wing-backs, while Gilbert joins Conor Coventry and skipper Greg Docherty in a midfield three.
19-goal Matty Godden once against partners Tyreece Campbell up front.
Academy starlet Fullah features in the men's first-team squad for the first time and is joined on the bench by Dean Bouzanis, Tom McIntyre, Anderson, Kai Enslin, Daniel Kanu and Micah Mbick.
Charlton: Maynard-Brewer; Ramsay, A.Mitchell, Gillesphey; Watson, Gilbert, Coventry, Docherty (c), Edwards; Godden, Campbell
Subs: Bouzanis, McIntyre, Anderson, Fullah, Enslin, Kanu, Mbick

Why take such a risk? That team's just asking for trouble.4

A lot stronger than I was perhaps expecting.2

Seems good selection, some get game time ahead of playoffs. Attacking threat still there. Ones that need resting get well deserved afternoon off. Hope to see some changes in 2nd half. More time for Mbick and Kanu2

Surprised that Mannion is missing though, dont really need to rest a Goalkeeper do you?0 -

It may just be as simple as Mannion's got a slight niggle and they aren't risking it.

Obviously the plan is to give 1st team match minutes to a few squad players, to keep them match fit and sharp - in case they are needed in the playoffs6

We can kiss goodbye to promotion if Brewers in goal. Pray for Mannion9
-
As I expected, no surprises in starting 11, just replacements fror injured players and a couple of new youth on bench.
Ahadme must be ready for a move in the summer3 -
Are Jones and Berry being rested before the play-offs?0

@Covered End summed up the team selection dilemma the other day.Covered End said:I'm happy to go along with whatever Nathan thinks.
If we put out a strong team and get injuries some fans will blame him.
If we put out a weak team and don't win some fans will blame him.
If we put out a semi strong team and don't win some fans will blame him.
If we put out a semi strong team and get injuries some fans will blame him.
If we put out a strong team with a view of subbing them when comfortably ahead, we may well not get comfortably ahead.
If we put out a weakened team with a strong bench we may not win the game.
I don't envy Nathan Jones this week.

Pretty clear NJ wants 4th but isn’t prepared to take massive risks, I think it’s the correct approach8
-
I feel NJ is being too risky here, we cannot lose anyone to injury, our bench/squad isn't strong enough to cover losing Godden, TC or any of our midfielders.
Hopefully we get a very good start, be 2 or 3 goals up 1st half and we can get the subs on early.2 -
