Thames Water Meter

Has anybody got a water meter ? Apparently in certain areas where we are ‘seriously water-stressed’ they are going to be compulsory. Just wondered how your monthly bills compare to the set charge every month that we've had up to now.

So did ours. But there’s only 2 of us now, over the years we managed to convince 3 kids they be better moving out ;-)

We’ve had one for a good few years, 3 of us in the house, not much different to our charge per month, not including the latest price increase.
Mind you my lawn isn’t as good as it used to be, when I could leave the hose on most nights in the summer. Looks more like the Valley pitch nowadays, compared to what it was.

Is there a different charge for Asians ?

No idea where the 2nd two words you highlighted came from, now corrected.
  • I moved into a flat 18 months ago & supposedly had a meter. I started getting 6 monthly bills that were "estimated" so after the 2nd one I rang TW to see what's going on. They sent someone out to read it (I couldn't see any numbers) only to fund out there wasn't one installed  !!  The installed one and 3 months later still received an estimated bill. Asked them to check & the one they fitted wasn't working properly.....so they have now fitted another.

Only just into my 2nd month and it appears to be cheaper (household is me & 2 lads aged 21 & 18 *), so much so the big April price rise has basically had no effect.

I have always been a sceptic as to water meters being cheaper but to date it does appear so.

    * young lads being as they are only take on average 3 showers a week rather than one every day so my experience might not be the norm 🙂

Annoying you weren't metered earlier then as likely would have paid less
  • I was dreading getting a water meter when they forced us to have one a few years ago, and even more annoyed as my neighbour has a telephone poll outside their gaff and they won't put one outside his house as they can't disturb the foundations of the poll. Guess whose lawn is always green grrrrrrrrrrr.

However, as our kids are no longer at our address, our bills are now about £150 lower pa!
  • I called TW out to investigate a leak as we were paying £79/m for our water (just two of us), and our neighbours (also two person household)  said they were paying about £30.

TW guy had a look down the mains connection access as there was water sitting around the meter, but he said that was just rainwater and he couldn't find a leak anywhere.
Eventually, after some more phone calls, TW worked out that we were being charged the Rateable Value rather than metered cost.  Took about 9 months to sort out in total, but we're now paying £31/m and got a refund of £1100 for the overcharge.

The same neighbour said earlier this week they had just received their bill and it's gone up to £59/m.

  • Got a water meter put in about six years ago. Bills were related to actual use and they reduced dramatically.
No disruption because it is some kind of device on the water thing in the street.
An actual benefit for water cost. Unlike the power meters where they have to come in to a place you have cleared for them.
I reckon if you have a large household using a lot of water the savings would be marginal,

Had a meter for about 9 years. The annual bill still hasn’t equalled what we paid through water rates. Started off at about 50% of the cost.
  • Thanks for all comments, I'm not sure if I'm going to have a problem. I have a flat in a converted house, there's a main supply & obviously pipes coming off that to each separate flat & although I have a stopcock it's seized up so that needs replacing. At least one of the other flats is the same because when they had some plumbing works done recently they had to turn the water off at the mains so all the flats were without water for a while. The thing I'm wondering is, obviously the mains supplies the whole house, will Thames Water be able to install separate meters for the three flats ? The obvious answer is phone & ask but it just crossed my mind earlier so thought I'd check with the knowledgeable people on here first  :D
  • I've just had a water meter forced on me and the projections they've given me are for my bills to go through the roof.

TW thave sent us something outlining what they would expect for use to cost for average and high consumption based on the number of people living in a property.

There's four of us, but the projection they've sent seems to me to be the equivalent of a family of 8 with a swimming pool!
  • I had a meter fitted about 5 years ago and wished I'd had it fitted years earlier.
There were 4 of us and the bill reduced by @30%.
  • They say if you have more bedrooms than people you should definitely have a metre.

More people than bedrooms best sticking to the rateable tariff
  • I need to get a meter installed. I am being charged £60 a month. I live on my own. I don't drink tap water or drink coffee or tea. I drink coke. I don't have a bath every day and do my washing once a month. They have offered me a metter when i called them a couple of weeks ago and said I would think about it. I called TW to change my payments dates as I now get paid on the last day of the month instead of 22nd.

It's people on their own who are being ripped off severely.  This is just as good a reason as to why meters should be compulsory,  as well as the fact of water scarcity. This could be enforced for one bed properties for example with no need to leave it to 'consumer choice'.

At a guess you would paying less than £30pm if you had a meter.
    3 adults and I pay £42pm.
PS stop drinking coke it is very bad for you, one can has 9 tea spoons of sugar  ;)

projections like estimated gas and electric bills always over-estimate. So you pay them more upfront and getting your payments reduce even when you have evidence is nigh on impossible

No one is bringing ripped off.

The push to meters has been happening for many years.

not with a meter - you consumption, or lack of it, means you pay less.

I appreciate it is only a small number of responses, but CL are quite a varied lot in terms of households and the comments are a meter mean smaller bill

Exactly. I agree. The option to have a meter is not new is my point.

It’s always been advocated for smaller households.

I didn't say 'all' but a I did erroneously miss out 2 words (for some reason). I meant to say the comments indicate a meter means a smaller bill - not only did I mess out 'indicate' but 'a' too

you just go on the app and change your direct debit amount, don't even need to speak to the company.

yes, it is generally known that water meters can save some people a lot of cash but then there are those that hesitate and wonder (sometimes for years), if they will be better off or not, when they patently would, yet TW just let them carry on wondering. That is a rip off in this privatised free market where individuals like Rudders22 and plenty of others are left well out of pocket to the company's advantage. They have the data on which households would benefit and should install a meter to those.

    I don’t think that’s true.

Lots of activity in the past to get people on meters and think it may even be mandatory upon moving home.

Some object to the switch through misplaced beliefs.

Pretty sure all over your bills too.

I think on reflection it would be very hard to mandate that someone has to have a meter. I believe there are targets or objectives set in conjunction with Ofwat for water companies to install meters, or try to install a certain number of meters within a given period. If a homeowner is dead against it, apart from cutting them off, then financial penalties arise, still to the company's benefit.

A quick google tells me new builds in London have to have meters, and there's also compulsory metering in other areas facing up to water scarcity
  • Ten years or so ago we had a letter from TW stating all properties within LB of Bexley would be fitted with meters within 2 years, well they finally got round to our road early last year, when advised that after six months we would have a compassion, at which point we had to option of going on the meter with any saving being backed dated,  but after 12months we would automatically be switch to the meter. I have yet to receive a bill and they only take £5 by direct debit,  will attempt to contact them during the next couple of weeks to try and sort it out.
