Sadly passed away with pneumonia, aged 65.

    Just saw this on the news. That was a shock. 
    He was great as Jim Morrison in The Doors biopic and superb in the film, Heat.

    Sadly had throat cancer a few years back. Recommend watching his documentary about his life called VAL.

    Maybe a less known movie, but he was great in “Top Secret”. (Comedy by the people who did “Airplane!” And “Naked Gun”)
    Terrific example of playing a ridiculously silly role completely straight. He absolutely nailed it.

    Watched the Doors film many times back in the day through a haze of smoke. One of my favourite actors of our generation. I loved that Tom Cruise got Val his little swan song role in Mavrick.

    He was Brilliant in Tombstone. Probably his best performance . Has suffered a lot over the last dozen years or so. At peace now. RIP

    Watched his documentary recently. The throat cancer took a toll. He was really into portraying Mark Twain and was a very underrated actor.  Thought he stole the show in first Top Gun. RIP
