Mike Kenning RIP

  • Terrific right sided attacking player with real pace and a ferocious shot. With Glover on the left and both feeding off the unique talent of Eddie Firmani there were genuinely days we were unplayable toward the top of the Championship. A lasting memory was standing behind the goal in the old Covered End in the 5-2 trouncing of Cardiff. Glover, Matthews, Firmani had all scored and I was perfectly in line as Mike rifled in the 5th and the ball ripped into the roof of the net from the edge of the box after another perfect lay off from Firmani.

Thanks for the memories Mike. Rest in peace.
That 5-2 win over Cardiff was my first game, @Grapevine49
    I was hooked!

  • I also remember Mike Kenning returning to The Valley with Norwich - and scoring twice as Norwich raced into a 3-0 half-time lead.

All was not lost though, as Charlton staged one of their famous 'Grandstand finishes'..... With new signing from Norwich, Gordon Bolland scoring a late, late equaliser 3-3, against his old club - before missing what would have been a last-gasp winner!

Mike Kenning of course re-signed for Charlton a couple of years later - remember the game when desperate manager Firmani played him out of position at Left Back and he was given a torrid time as Leicester strolled to a 5-0 away win? Firmani was sacked soon after!

  • Remember him well, had a cannonball shot.
         RIP Mike.

Yes 5-0. The Norwich 3-3 game was boxing day I think. I thought Harry Gregory scored the equaliser as he ran to the touch line & shook hands with a copper.
