Looking to build on recent momentum Charlton arrived at the Valley this afternoon seeking to close the gap on two of the three clubs at the top of the table. And they didn’t disappoint. The first half was exceptional for the Addicks, who went ahead after only ten minutes through a Matty Godden poacher’s finish. Then he struck again, getting on the end of a Macauley Gillesphey free kick, turning it in at the far post. The Addicks cruised through the first forty-five without giving Wigan so much as a sniff.

Only moments into the second half, Godden almost struck again. Wigan keeper Tickle pulled off an impressive save with his legs. Charlton continued to boss the game but couldn’t seem to put in a third to kill it flat. The Addicks maintained pressure after taking Godden off, to be replaced by Miles Leaburn. Despite not having much of anything all afternoon, with seven minutes of normal time left, Wigan decided to make it more interesting. Will Mannion pulled off a great save from a decent shot but was unable to recover and stop the follow up, giving Wigan hope of a turn around. A few more changes were made for Charlton, bringing on Alex Mitchell and Karoy Anderson, and Tom McIntyre. The visitors then had a few more opportunities of note, including a couple of corners, but they were all dealt with relatively easily.

It’s disappointing to have conceded but ultimately we’re three points closer to the final goal.

Charlton 2 Wigan 1

Over to you.

Could have really helped our GD today. Shame we could not get 3 or 4.  Going to be a 3 horse race for 2nd place.

Take a win any way they come at this stage of the season. Played very well for the most part.
Godden showing what a great finisher he is again.

    2nd is within reach.

The result is the important thing, but the second half was a bit frustrating as we slightly lost our intensity.

Watson did some useful things centrally in attacking areas, but showed he's a much weaker one on one defender than Ramsay.

Godden showed why he's a better option than Miles, as he has that fox in the box instinct and cuter movement.

A bit devastated by the loss of that clean sheet but otherwise good. We should have added a third and it's a shame we didn't so we could give Ahadme and Enslin some minutes at the end. Still, can't complain at another 3 points against a team who have just had a new manager join who they will have wanted to impress. Good to see Tennai back and playing well, everyone looks better in the current setup. If the Wycombe v Wrexham game ever ends and stays the same then this will have been an incredible day. We've got some tough games now; Peterborough are a different team, Huddersfield went from not scoring a home goal in 2025 to scoring 5 in one game and we never really seem to beat Lincoln. 3 potential banana skins in the next 4 to maneuver so it's good that we got what we needed today.

While it was disappointing to concede (and a disappointing goal TO concede at that) if my maths is right since the start of February we've conceded only 6 times in 10 games.

Which when you look back at the pre-NJ standards of defense is an almost unbelievable turnaround. We had some really turgid attacking dross to put up with along the way but it's an impressive feat.
  • Talk about making hard work of it!

Excellent performance for about 85 minutes and if only Campbell had put away his chance just after half-time we might have run up 4 or 5 goals.

Instead that was a very nervy last 7 or 8 minutes after Wigan scored.

Word of praise for Watson. Really good game after being out for so long.

Keep this standard of performance up for the last 9 games and who knows, a trip to Wembley may not be necessary!

Those 2 points we didn’t deserve to drop at blackpool would have been really handy about now.

The score doesn't reflect how one sided it was, Charlton were dominant and if Campbell had scored the one on one it wouldn't have been a travesty. As it was Watson allowed his man to cross too easily twice, second time they scored from that error, Jones had seen enough, Watson was off, Ramsay took his position and Mitchell filled in. Now seven days to the next game, let's hope Edwards isn't far away.

Bit pissed off really. Got really sloppy last twenty minutes or so, made it much harder than it should have been, left feeling relieved which it shouldn't have been like. Need to kill teams off when we have the chance. Three points but not exactly happy. If we want to finish second gonna have to do better against Hudds, Wycombe and Wrexham.

Turning 0 points into 3 against Orient sort of adds balance. The table never lies after 46 games.

Although that bastard injury time goal by Birmingham still makes me very, very angry. Calm down Munro, calm down.

May have been a blessing in disguise conceding. Gave us some good practice under reasonable pressure from Wigan.

Great result. If we can become even slightly more clinical I do think Top 2 is possible.

TC does my head in, moments of brilliance followed by moments of awful finishing.

Overall well deserved but we always make things harder than they should be.

  • Bad for my nerves. One sided game with blind panic at the end.

Not sure if that's Watson's defensive weakness or lack of match fitness, but it was the correct move to make the change we did as we started looking vulnerable down that flank.

It’s easy to fall into this mindset though. Now we’ve hit form and we’re trying to put pressure on those above us, our expectations have risen. We need to be careful not to get too irritated by minor issues if they aren’t really affecting our progress.
At the end of the day, all that matters is the three points. It doesn’t matter what the score is one game, at the beginning of the next game the score starts at 0-0 and all that matters is what you do in those 90 minutes.
NJ can work on changing things in the week if there are things to fix.

As long as Wycombe don't win I don't mind - worst case scenario next Saturday is that we're 5 points off 2nd with a Wrexham win today, if it's a draw it gives Wycombe the opportunity to be 6 points ahead of us if they win their very winnable game in hand.
