    It's a tough old climate out there for pubs. High energy bills, high staff costs, and people are drinking less.

    Hate seeing them close.

    Seeing all these pubs go is heartbreaking. Feels like we’re losing part of our culture.

    My friend was a regular there and told me this morning, so I feel I should share - I'm sad to report that Mark the landlord passed away recently after a short illness.

    They simply aren’t (all) used like they once were. Think Blockbusters!! Times change, much like night clubs. Since the early 90’s isn’t it 9 out of 10 nightclubs have closed or maybe even more, now less than 800 clubs left.

    We went there earlier in the season glorious sunny day. 

    It had no pump beer and was serving bottles which run out, the bar tender then come to the front of the pub to shout at the upstairs living quarters. around 5 minutes later somebody come out looking like they had just been woken and told the bar tender to go the local shop to get more bottles we left at this point but had a clue the writing was on the wall

    This pub has been run by the Brooker family for many years. Dad Terry had it before Mark took it on.  His brother owns the Sports Club up Mayday Gardens and the Bull and Red Lion on Shooters Hill.  This family know how to run pubs.  I had many a great day down the Anchor and I wished I had visited it more often in recent years. 

    I am very sorry to hear the news of Mark's passing. Rest in Peace Mark.  X

    Used to have some fantastic Sundays down there Bren.

    Also remember going back even further, entering the fishing competitions down there, reckon I'd have been 10 or 11. Used to get 5 quid to who could cast nearest the old barge moored up just out to about 100 yards opposite. Weren't till I started drinking in the Pickwick 6 or 7 years later, I found out it was done out luxury inside and owned by an ex bank robber.

    Don’t be silly… Remote, I walked past at 1 on Sunday the gloriously sunny lunchtime and the place had stacks of bikes outside and people drinking. And yes that was a sunny day but people do that walk and cycle all year round. 

    That part of the river is a working part of the river also and a lot of people still live in the area. 

    Honestly the years I lived in Charlton that was my favourite by far. A friend once summed it up excellently by saying that it was a mix between The Long Good Friday and Priscilla Queen of the Desert. I loved it. 

    Unfortunately I have heard it is being handed back to the brewery. This is a great shame. I hope someone takes it on.

    According to the plans the pub will be very near where the new Charlton pier goes once the riverside development gets underway.

    Decent pubs within walking distance of The Valley becoming a huge issue.

    Sorry to hear about Mark.
    Let's hope the Anchor reopens, would be even sadder to see all the hard work he put in end.
    But now I know why they were having problems keeping the Anchor going.

    The location is good. Wright on the Thames path. Always groups of walker going past and cyclists even on winter afternoons. The place also popular for birthdays and weddings or it was.

    The issue is it strikes me as a very much 1 drink pub aside from when Charlton play. We tend to drink at the abbey arms now and then train it down.
