Local river question

edited September 2009 in Not Sports Related
Just because i was bored the other day lookin at spread sheets(and no porn allowed) i looked on the net to see if i could find where the Kid---Brooke was. There is alot about the Quaggy , with maps and stuff. I have even seen it in Lee when driving the other day .I didnt know but its the river that goes underground when it reaches Sutcliffe Park. All i could find re the Brooke in Kidbrooke was it was from an area called KYD, and it feeds into the Quaggy. The questionis for all you locals and old Kidbrookians where is it ? Where Broad walk meets the main road near ShootersHill there is a small dyke (not Hariet Harman) that seems to run towards the Royal Herbert and old Brooke hospital site, but im sure it would be running up hill if it was to feed into the Quaggy.

so where is it ?

GH, I checked up on a couple of books I have on local history and found the below in 'Blackheath Village and Environs Volume II' by Neil Rhind:

The name of the Old Manor of Kidbrooke may have derived from that of the small streams which separated the parish from Eltham - the Kid Brooks, which rose on the western slopes of Shooters Hill and flowed across Kidbrooke and the Caotor Estate eventually to join the Quaggy and the River Ravensbourne.

Ah,there be two local rivers that have this name but are spelt differently.
The KIDbrook rises at Kidbrook goes straight underground and joins the River Quaggy at Lee Green.
The KYDbrook rises at Chiselhurst then dissapears, but looks as though it may flow into the River Cray.
  • What River rises at Sparrows Lane ?
  • what's happened to the big river that runs through London?
I picked up a tube map today and the big blue swathe has disappeared!!!

  • nothing is sacred to these morons, London's biggest landmark.
  • In Boris' first big move since taking the drink off the tubes, he's put the drink back on the tube map!
  • So if the KidBrooke goes straight under ground how do we know it was there ?

  • I scrolled through a Poker programme on the telly the other day, and they had a river there, maybe that was the Kid Brooke.
  • On the otherside of the road where I live on Shootershill there is a small stream running round the back of the houses, anybody building an extension has to divert it to the satisfaction of the relevant water authorities.
  • I 've got a OS map of London dating around 1830, I'll have a look at it when I get home.
  • well there actually three "kidbooks" two join the quaggy around the Sutcliffe Park area . They are the Lower KidBrook and the Middle KidBrook but when the Quaggy first rises (near Locksbottom) the river is call Kyd Brook .

mind you still dont know were as siad above must be off shootershill some where.
  • Kidbrooke is a big ol place really. Starts around Sutcliffe Park, the Ferrier and it's local train station and works up to the foot of Shooters Hill. Being also SE3 they all get to call themselves as living in Blackheath, but we all know the truth, don't we?
  • The River at Sparrows Lane is the River Shutle which then flows through parts of Sidcup and joins the River Cray by the Black Prince Interchange.
  • Correct, and some good fishing to be had on the Cray there as well.
Has anyone seen the rather large carps in the river Darenth at Dartford just as it passes under the railway line.
A group of five all doubles couple of them must be 20+.
