I won a £5 postal order (remember them?) for requesting his picture he published in either Shoot or Roy of the Rovers comic (can’t recall which one now), I was gutted that it was a black and white picture and not colour. Wish I’d kept it but never thought to.2

It stuck in my mind too. 5-0 down at half time and the police wouldn’t let me leave.DaveMehmet said:I remember in one programme Q&A he put the 7 0 defeat against Brighton as his most memorable match.2 -
Always sticks in my mind. It was my 30th birthday that day. Some day out though!0

It's one of my most memorable games too. To think we were unbeaten in 7 going into that game! Didn't stop me from going to Newcastle the following week though, where we were infinitely better and only lost 1-2 to a couple of late Keegan headers.0 -
We nearly took the lead with a shot from Steve Dowman, after that everything they hit went flying into the net.
7 down on the hour mark and was thinking this will be double figures.
Think we nearly scored late in the game which would have been the highlight.0 -
It was mine and my mates 18th that weekend, party on the Friday night then off to Brighton on the Saturday morning.....can't really remember much about the game but like Burnley away (7-1 defeat) won't ever forget the score.Isawsummersplay said:Always sticks in my mind. Still love him … always my fave5

My all time football and Charlton hero. He came to prominence just as I started my Charlton journey.
God bless him and all that got a slap from him, no doubt fully deserved!7 -
My favourite player also, great attitude and entertainment value to watch, rarely a dull moment!soapy_jones said:My all time football and Charlton hero. He came to prominence just as I started my Charlton journey.

Great interview.
I would like to hear more from Flanagan as well, in any other era he would be a legend, instead of just "the other one"4 -
Like many others around my age, my all-time Charlton hero, and yes, I've got the T-shirt (which is unbeaten so far this season)!1
-
Hales and Flanagan! now thats a fans Q/A meeting that would certainly sell out! I wouldn't hold it in Maidstone though.killerandflash said:Great interview.

Somehow can’t see Scott Minto/Steve Brown being the Jeremy Kyle needed for this though 😂Hal1x said:

Was over the hill by the time I was old enough to properly watch our matches but u can’t help but admire him - totally down to earth and genuine, no airs and graces, a great goalscorer and more than just a bit handy - a proper 70’s footballer and charlton hero0

Does anyone know if he came from a family of Butchers? It's a bit strange, but the butchers shop up the road from me, used to be run by the Hales family (Station Rd, Rainham) and he hailed from Lower Halstow, which is a couple of minutes drive away. My wife was brought up here and she seems to recall something about a family member being a footballer.
Sadly for me, I only ever saw DH when he was playing for the Gills.0 -
Weren't his family in the scrap metal trade ?tangoflash said:Does anyone know if he came from a family of Butchers? Is he really our leading goal scorer…..I thought it’s Stuart Leary?1
-
Hales is in all competitions- 168. Leary is in league only - 153. Obviously Leary not one for scoring in the cup!1
-
Ah Stuart Leary. Hales & Leary completely different type of players. Both wonderful players who excited, entertained, and each brought sublime skills to the Valley0
-
The League Cup only came in towards the end of his time with us also, so he would have played fewer cup games.Weegie Addick said:Hales is in all competitions- 168. Leary is in league only - 153. Obviously Leary not one for scoring in the cup!

Half of his face is missing, but there's no doubt who it is!
Edit - just noticed the "full name" bit, a bit of a clue there.3
