Terrible reviews from his former clubs but I’ll trust Jones to get the defensive signings right at least. Hopefully unlike Potts he can actually play so we can drop Gillesphey.0

Based on those reviews from former clubs, I’m wondering if he’s a bit of a last minute “that’ll do” signing to provide cover on the left, replacing Potts, and allow REG to be moved in permanently.5

Technical Director Andy Scott added: "We’re really happy we’re bringing Tom in. He’s a real competitor. We’ve had some very impressive reports on him as a character - he really wants to come in and prove his worth. He’s left-footed, a good footballer, brave - he’s played at full-back, centre-back and as a holding midfielder. It’s a really good opportunity for him and for us."4 -
Looks like cover. Doubt he'll start more than 3 games unless there's injuries. Very average player.1

Another Scot!0

Can't we just give these guys a chance and see how they go?14

I wish Tom and Alex the very best and hope they come good for themselves and Charlton Athletic.
The thing that frustrates me is the statements from the club leading up to the window - i.e. We no longer believe in improving players for their parent club / there is no point in bringing players in to warm the bench / we only want players who'll improve the side we put out.
Just reading their back catalogues on their recent inactivity, past injuries and general fan reports re form and their failure at Championship level doesn't fill me with confidence. Have our much maligned recruitment team turned a corner?
Reading back my own post I know I come across as a cynical, miserable old git ... just a minute ...5 -
This from my daughter’s boyfriend who is a Reading fan:
“Just saw you signed Tom Mcintyre from Portsmouth. He's Reading born and bred. Bang average player for us in the championship, but League 1 might prove to be his level.”

Don’t care about Pompey opinions. They’ve had a poor season so none of theirs will have stood out
je was very good at Reading and their fans were annoyed to lose him
he can cover numerous roles, and is “hungry and angry” as Curbs used to love them.Left footed centre backs are actually pretty rare (and highly sought after in this window) but they give a defence a lovely balance
lets see him for ourselves before writing him off27 -

My brother has played with him back in the day with Reading academy. Says he's toilet.
But good luck to him and hopefully he's developed a fair bit since then.4 -
You’ll never sing that

Wish him all the best with us and hope he provides options and cover for gilleshpey who has improved substantially in recent games, points losing errors aside. If REG was never going to start in that spot, i think it's good to get balance of cover in case of injury or loss of form and hope he's sufficiently decent for a perm at the end of the season.0

Think this gives a better perspective4 -
Have I got this right then? He fractured his skull on his debut for Reading and broke his ankle on debut for Portsmouth? This has made me rather nervous for him! Welcome to the Addicks, Tom.8

At the end of the day, we pretty much did what Jones said we were going to do. The squad needed trimming and he probably looks at loans with a view to the summer, providing cover now.1

When Dan Potts was signed, NJ was banging on about the need to have left - footed competition at LCB with Gillesphey.
Potts has gone and McIntyre signed in his place.

So when it comes to player reviews, we take them as a word of gospel when they come from Portsmouth fans but not to be believed when they come from Middlesbrough fans. Got it4

Sounds like sour grapes to me from your brother and one that is repeated up and down the country from the myriad of players who are released from academies about players who are given contracts.
Having seen it close up it's not an exact science with players in their teens and many succeed under different coaches somewhere else.
A professional coach I know who have worked with Premier players was surprised that Deji Elerewe who he worked with since he was an under 9 didn't make it at CAFC and who helped to get him to the valley at about 13.
Gillesphey has had some good play with defensive header and the long passes at times( lots of poor punts !)but the mandatory mistakes he can't get out of his game so let's see if Tom McIntyre is an improvement.
All CAFC fans will hope so 🤞🏻0 -
What a debut!
Sounds like our type of player.
