Wales' EFL clubs eye Europe via Welsh League Cup

Probably one of the most bizarre facts out there is that the most successful Welsh team in Europe plays their games in Shropshire.
 

Is it now time to get the professional English Welsh sides back into the welsh system (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/articles/cwyl0r8d81lo) to boost their coefficient. If it does happen would it be fair on the EFL football clubs?

    Happened for many years.

    Newport got to the Cup Winners Cup Quarter Finals one year IIRC  EDIT  It says that it was 1981 in the article.

    As far as I understand the situation at the moment. All four clubs enter Europe through the English system (like normal EFL clubs). They all play in the Welsh League Cup at the moment (similar to the way Charlton enter  the Kent Cup and how the Premier/Championship teams enter the Bristol Street Motors trophy.

    If this were to happen, lets be honest a lot of wacko ideas are going about at the moment, they rightly wouldn't be allowed to get Europe through the English league system. I would
    then like the English FA to push for the Bristol Street Motors trophy to be a pathway to Europa Conference League for a few seasons to even out the fairness on League one/two clubs (a lot of money is in the top two leagues anyway).

    I get the point about the Welsh clubs, however the reason the Welsh FA seem to be on board with the idea so the co-efficient (of the Welsh FA) would be bigger, which would benefit Welsh football in the future.

    It's up to the Welsh clubs to decide what to do, but correctly the rules seem to state that Welsh clubs can only qualify for Europe through one pathway. If the EFL Welsh clubs  want to qualify for Europe via the Welsh Cup, then if they won the FA Cup or EFL Cup or finished in the European places in the PL, then they wouldn't qualify for Europe.

    That seems a pretty good swap actually, as competing in the Welsh Cup gives them a great chance of Europe each year.

    They can play reserves in most of the Welsh Cup games. Certainly Europa Conference games would stretch the squad.

    Imagine the fixture congestion if Newport or Wrexham got there from L1/2 and had to play the EFL trophy too!

    They can play reserves in most of the Welsh Cup games. Certainly Europa Conference games would stretch the squad.
    Ok let make it clear (for Swansea and Cardiff I know at least) they do already enter their reserves in the Welsh Cup- this is only to give a reason to compete. I would imagine, if this would be to happen, they wouldn't participate in any of the English cups (why would they) but still play in the leagues. (without the added bonus of qualifying for Europe through the Premier League).

    Problem for Newport not Wrexham (they have Hollywood money).

    Think they have already decided, and are just waiting on Uefa to decide how to manage it. 

    Not sure what the Hollywood lot would make on the added time it'll take them to get Champions League football (I am sure that is what they are thinking)

    Fun fact on this point - there’s no league in Liechtenstein, their clubs play in the Swiss pyramid. There is however a Liechtenstein Cup which allows the winner to qualify for the Europa Conference League.

    This means their clubs can’t qualify for the CL or EL via the Swiss league or cup, but they could qualify for the EL by winning the ECL. Winning the EL would then qualify them for the CL.

    To make it nerdier, I wonder what would then happen to the Liechtenstein coefficient if one of their clubs won the CL. Would winning the Liechtenstein Cup instead get a EL or CL place? Or would the runners up get an additional spot?

    What about Merthyr Town, shouldnt they be allowed to take part in this?

    They've won the Welsh Cup themselves, when they were previously Merthyr Tydfil

    Let the Welsh decide how they divvy up their few European spots. If they want the Welsh teams who play in the EFL to have the chance of qualifying for Europe via the Welsh Cup then so be it. The response to everything doesn’t have to be hysteria.

    This is not hysteria: I am simply of the opinion that the Welsh clubs should leave the EFL and play in The League of Wales.

    I think the competitions integrity, and the impact on the standing of existing competitions are pretty much the only reasons (but lets be honest who carers if the Welsh clubs are in the League Cup and FA Cup, we dream of Man Utd away not another Wrexham game).


    This BBC article  states     Assurances had already been given that the four Welsh clubs would continue playing in the EFL but for that to happen – the FA needs to rule and England's governing association has decided that it needs a full board meeting to have the final say

    I strongly doubt this is the last we heard about this.

    Voted against getting (a deal worth)  6 million compensation join the Wales top division (and being apart of the new Welsh Pyramid).
