  • 20.3% of the young full time students accepted on to undergraduate courses at the University of Exeter in 2008/9 were from lower socio-economic groups. This compares to 17.5% in 2007/8.
  • [cite]Posted By: ChicagoAddick[/cite]The club is nicknamed The Grecians. This name has a disputed history, with many theories being proposed for its origin. No one is sure of the definitive answer to why but one source suggests that the club voted for the name in 1908 because of its association with St Sidwells parish.[9] People living in the parish of St Sidwells in Exeter have been known as "Greeks" or "Grecians" for many centuries.[10] This is possibly due to the parish's location outside the city walls. In Homer's epic poem Iliad the Greek forces laid siege to the walls of Troy. The association possibly arrose because of rivalries between city boys and St Sidwellians during the annual beating the bounds.[11] It has also been suggested that there was a group of children in St Sidwells who were referred to as the 'Greasy Un's' and another possible, but unlikely source for the name was from clock that hung outside a jeweller's shop in Sidwell Street, close to the ground, which had the word 'Grecians' engraved or painted on the face.Source Wikipedia.

    It all makes sense now.

Fancy not knowing the origins of the clubs nickname.......

  • Exeter Cathedral and the Annunciation Church in Chislehurst, opposite Sainsbury's were both built to identical plans, one being exactly one-third the size of the other.

They are believed to have been built in the following order:

    1. Exeter Cathedral, Exeter
    2. The Annunication Church, Chislehurst
    3. Sainsbury's, Chislehurst
  • [cite]Posted By: LargeAddick[/cite]Exeter contains the oldest Guildhall in Britain (1468) and it is still in use today. Within is contained the oldest civic seal in England (1175).

Never realised seals lived to such a ripe old age.
The seal was nearly 300 years old before they built it a home!

  • Exeter fans have a penchant for wearing scarecrow outfits and like to travel to games in tractors or horse drawn carts. Affluent fans cycle or take the bus, some are known to sail in a dinghy. They can't talk as we do because of all the straw in their mouths but if you listen very carefully you can usually comprehend what they are saying. Eg "ooidor" is cider. "fookorff" is....
