Seems  a remarkably quick investigation by Football standards. Quite refreshing.
VAR decisions on offsides have taken longer.

I feel sorry for the bloke, I hope he knows most people are on his side and gets some proper and tangible support. Whoever put the video out is lower than low. I have been pulled up before over my hatred of grasses and getting mixed up with me not wanting whistles to be blown but the two things are totally separate. He was videoed by someone he trusted and that trust has been violated ending with him publicly losing a job he would have dedicated shitload of time and made sacrifices for.

As for the utter waffle I've been reading about drugs and the black and white views. Keep your heads in the sand.

As for where a recreational drug came from and the abuse taking place in the supply chain. Don’t buy anything made in the far east. Or petrol for that matter. Or any meat.
And banking, dont invest any money. And probably best walk away from any pension funds you have too you will shit yourself when you see the practices of companies where a lot of that money gets invested

All my weed now comes from my own plants that ya know, are a plant that grows of its own doing, in the ground, naturally. Occasionally in a greenhouse like peoples tomatoes and bananas

I think the moral of the story here is 'never let someone film you'. You never know when it'll come back to bite you.

People taking various substances at their own leisure is one thing, you can have a stance on that and that's fine. However the various videos and reports etc would quite likely come under some sort of "professional conduct" clause or argued as bringing his employer into disrepute so its really not that surprising he's been cut off.

The "friend" who filmed/released the videos stitched Coote up no question but there's no suggestion he (Coote) was coerced or forced to do those things so ultimately its still on him.
  • Scary world where people's livelihoods and reputations are demolished over a momentary lack of judgement.

Feel sorry for the bloke. Whoever released the footage are wrong uns.

David Coote is an arrogant twat for being filmed.
His position as a 'Neutral' ref was compromised by his verbal attack on Klopp. (Even if true!)
    Yellow card

Coote, snorting Cocaine when working abroad.
Don't have it filmed, you total moron.
    Straight Red.

Coote, corresponding with a punter who had had a bet on a player's getting a yellow card and the player mentioned did get booked by DC. The fact it was deserved doesn't matter. Why ask the punter if he got his bet on afterwards?
    Straight Red.

Why a 42 year old with at least 8 years left at the highest level, would be so naive to throw that all away is beyond crazy. Maybe the drugs had affected his mind (unlike CL members !) and he was addicted.

His position as a top Referee was untenable.

So you're up for giving him another chance then yes?

I don't know where this redemption arch for Coote was going to come from, he's compromised, however you feel about the video seeing the light of day, or in many cases, people's views on Liverpool, just don't say it.

As for the cocaine, it's a real problem in society at the moment, if he was a player caught, it'll be a long ban, and in most jobs it would be summary dismissal, so no surprise he's got the sack.

He wasn't actually sacked for the videos as such, they just highlighted some problems. He needs help though and should be supported by the PGMOL even if his potential was untenable.

Sources told ESPN that Coote was not sacked for his behaviour directly relating to the Klopp incident or the video when he was on UEFA duty, but for his general conduct, which was viewed to have fallen below the expected standard.

This. It wasn't a "momentary lack of judgement" it was multiple offenses bringing his position into question and damaging the reputation of an organisation where reputation is everything. He was by all accounts already on his last warning with the PGMOL for various other questions of his conduct. Then the original video of him under the influence, plus clearly not being impartial about his profession, the texts about betting, the other video of him doing a line. Multiple indiscretions when he had already been warned he needed to be "whiter than white".

I have no doubt someone who had previously been close to him has set out to destroy his career and don't disagree that person is scum. But in certain professions you simply cannot put yourself in these positions. Particularly in something high profile and with press attention.

My career isn't exactly high profile or public facing but I know that it would be breaking my code of conduct and contract if there were videos of me online doing these things. It would end my career. Even worse if there were texts between me and mates about betting on things I have some information or influence on from my job I'd probably be in jail.

So yes someone has taken him down but he and only he put himself in the position to be able to be taken down.

I find it hard to believe that Coote allowed that to be recorded right in front of him!  It could well have been a hidden camera or those glasses with a built-in camera.  Anyone in the public eye would shy away from filming of stuff like that unless they don't know its going on - even him.

yeah, especially that part when Coote says 'but seriously, this video must never be shown to anyone'
  • So he won't turn up in the Saudi league, I'm guessing.

Feel quite sorry for the bloke. The S*n clearly have something more on him so he's been forced to come out, all feels very 20 years ago and outdated. Comments under the articles show why no PL footballers have come out while playing too. The whole thing shows there's a lot of work to do for football to be an inclusive place for all

Yeah reading a lot of comments on Reddit saying that he's purely admitting he's Gay, to try and deflect, so that if anyone slates him off in the future... He can simply claim that they're being homophobic rather than address the issue - Does equally feel like they're typically reading the headline though, without reading the article... a common fault with modern society.

  • Strongly suspect The Sun had something else on Coote and used it to, erm, persuade him to get the "exclusive" that being gay apparently caused him to take drugs, slag off teams and managers when he was supposed to be impartial, and send texts about yellow cards for certain players before games.

Agree with The Sun and the forced coming out bit - absolute scum paper.  However, my sympathy is limited on him losing his job etc - the 'pressure of hiding being gay/the job led me to...' rings a bit hollow to me, think he's just a bit of an idiot making very stupid decisions.

  • They've been talking about this all morning o  Talksport & I don't understand why this is such big news.

It's 2025, I'd suggest that 95% of the population, myself included, don't care about his sexuality.

It seems to me that he's using this to gain sympathy from the general public to excuse poor choices he made whilst in a very high powered position.

Maybe controversial, but that's my view 🤷‍♂️

Go have a look at the comments under the news articles and you'll understand that a lot of people really do care, even if they are a minority they are very very vocal and abusive

I tend to agree. His personal life / sexuality is not of interest. And should not be.

Surely if you really are trying to move on you shut up and go ‘no comment ’ at this point in the episode.

It smacks of a PR strategy to stay in the news in the hope of some paid for work.

If that is what he wants so be it.

Doesn't matter how small the %. As someone who has been abused for their sexuality it is no comfort if 95% of people are fine with me as the 5% are louder and drown them out
