He won the 2021 Diss and District Angling Club Mere Masters semi-final.  But these days, the woke SPOTY judges don't consider that as being good enough for the big prize.

Jude Bellingham’s nomination is a strong one. Absolutely took Real Madrid by storm in his first season, beating even the most optimistic of expectations.

If England had won the Euros final then I think he’d have been a shoe-in for this.
  • I know this has been done before, but under no circumstances should a darts player be anywhere near the running for what's supposed to be an award for sports people.

You know what, Luke Littler for me.

To do what he has done at his age and literally transformed the profile of his sport in such a short space of time, is nothing short of ridiculous.  Debatable whether Darts is considered a sport though.

Hodgkinson will win it though I think.

The darts people will pile in on Littler. They’re more invested than a few Real Madrid supporters.

Has to be Joe Root but they will give it to one of the two I’ve never heard of .
Genuine question, which are the two you haven’t heard of?
  • Cricket is the second most popular sport in the world and we have one of the greatest players at the moment. I love darts, para cycling and triathlon but in terms of global appeal…

Sarah Storey and Alex Yee but later i googled Alex Yee and seeing his face ,  i do remember him winning the Triathlon in the Olympics . I've definitely never heard of Sarah Storey.

Sorry but when you say 'They'll'  give it to one of the two you're not familiar with, who is the 'They' you are referring to. Isn't it the general public, the likes of you and me voting, so presumably if you expect one of them to win, you're acknowledging that they they do enjoy a high profile with the general public, just not with you.

Appreciate Littler is only 17 but would feel weird him winning it when he's 4th best in the world when most of the others were the best in their sports.  Humphries was the World Champion.

    I hope Hodgkinson wins it.

But if you haven't heard of one of the finalists, how can you say it has to be another. Bit like saying Charlton deserved to win a game you haven't seen isn't it?

Littler is ranked 4th in a 2 year money race in which he only has 1 year money.

Agreed that Humphries should be nominated before Littler

True.  But still, Humphries is still world champion (for now!) and world no 1.

Who was on the judging panel?

The judging panel for this year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year came from the world of sport, broadcasting and journalism.

It included five-time Olympic cycling champion Dame Laura Kenny, ex-runner Iwan Thomas, Paralympian Ade Adepitan, former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha and Ireland rugby veteran Rory Best.

Broadcaster Eilidh Barbour was joined by sports journalists Laura Williamson (The Athletic) and Eleanor Crooks (PA Media), as well as Stephanie Hilborne - CEO of Women in Sport.

Representing the BBC were director of sport Alex Kay-Jelski, head of sport content Philip Bernie and executive producer Gabby Cook.

Because that’s the way it’s gone in recent years.
I don’t watch women’s football so I hadn’t heard of the winners of the last two competitions either .
That probably says I’m not in touch with the public if it’s gone with the public vote . I can’t help that.
I barely have enough time to watch the sports I love such as cricket , Boxing and men’s football . Athletics I dip into briefly when the Olympics are on but I know very little about it and I’ve never watched a para Olympics ( if that’s the correct term ) .

Fair enough. You don't have time for the other sports, but why does that make the nominees from them any less worthy winners? You did say it has to be Root. I'd go Yee boy having followed his career to date, well leaving his appalling choice of football team aside of course 😉

I don’t believe I said they were less worthy winners.l I just don’t know enough about them .

As for Root . He’s scored more international runs than any test player in 2024. He also overtook Alistair Cook for the most England Runs and centuries this year. If he doesn’t win it being confirmed as England’s greatest ever player when will he ever win it ?
Possibly if he helps win  the Ashes next winter but when was the last time we did that in Australia?

Alex Yee and Keeley Hodgkinson would both be worthy winners based purely on their achievements. And in an Olympic year I think its good to have an Olympian win spoty

Joe Root though, man we are going to miss him when he is gone. I dont think his year has bought with it the overall transcendent accolades it should have in the wider press. Anyone who likes cricket and watches it knows all about how good he has been this year and for the last 11 years.

Luke Littler definitely fits the profile but I'm going to say as much as I acknowledge darts as an event and something that is played to an amazingly high standard now. MvG, James Wade, Phil Taylor, Michael Smith and their cohorts are not sportsmen. I'm going to be a massive hypocrit too as I think snooker players are sportspeople and the Venn diagram between snooker, pool and darts shows they all exist in the same sphere but darts, not quite. I can easily be convinced snooker players aren't sportspeople so don't think I'm ready to die on that hill!
