Dont you get about 25% of the capacity for Cup games? - Unless parts of Roots Hall have been closed?Elthamaddick said:on their site their fans seem to think we're in line for <800 tickets2 -

A shame that cannot be said for Southend.AFKABartram said:

All down the Foresters for opening time.1

Mate, I’d just turned 15 for that game in 1991. Was in there early playing pool with our lot when the strippers first come out. I’d only just started getting into boozers and drinking and felt fast tracked that day to adulthood. Said to my pal last night i remember a girl giving some skinheads head a polish and another giving someone’s glasses a very unhygienic clean. Then after the game with all the trouble (I think with Arsenal). Crazy what we used to get up to as teens.Off_it said:All down the Foresters for opening time.
My lad at 14 1/2 will be just shy age wise as I was that day when we go there in a few weeks. He’ll get a Fanta in a quiet friendly pub and then a Greggs if he’s lucky!20 -

Weirdly I have vague memory that Southend often used to play their home games on a Friday night back in the day.ValleyGary said:Would love this to be on the Friday night, proper piss up.
Good club Southend, shouldn't be where they are.
Anybody else remember that or am I going senile?5 -

No you're not, went there to knock off the ground on a Friday night for a nil nil against Scunthorpe. 2 years later, the sending off/penalties gameSix-a-bag-of-nuts said:

Quite correct, seem to remember a 1-1 draw Alan Hart and a lot of trouble mid seventies.Six-a-bag-of-nuts said:

Southend and Tranmere both used to do that, as both are in the shadow of bigger clubs so tried to avoid fixture clashes.Six-a-bag-of-nuts said:

When I worked at Allder's at Basildon one of my colleagues always carefully scheduled when he worked the late shift on a Friday, so that he was free to slope off to Roots Hall.Six-a-bag-of-nuts said:

Tranmere to avoid the two scouse clubs, Stockport to avoid City and United.0

Yes... Yes it was... I was there tooBigRedEvil said:Was it Kyle Reid who scored a late winner there once?
It finally broke the curse of not seeing us win on the road between that game, and our 1-0 win at Anfield... I hadn't gone to large amounts of away games in that period, but I'd been to enough for it to be bloody annoying, including a 2-2 draw at Plymouth where we scored two late goals to go 2-1 up, only for them to equalise at the death.0 -
I think the Kyle Reid game was indeed on a Friday night...3

He definitely liked Roots Hall. The bullet header to equalize in that 1-1 draw when loads of Charlton went and Gatting/Curbs were both sent off then the 'Brazil' goal a season or two later0 -
away days at little ramshackle grounds like Southend excited me when we were first went down from the prem, and heaven forbid even to League One, on the basis that they would provide a brief change from the repetitive and souless new-build / tourist-filled stadia of the prem(ish) clubs.
i struggle to enjoy them now it's a weekly thing...2 -

Torquay used to kick off on Saturday nights at 7.30 for some reason and Scunthorpe would kick off at home at 3.15 because it would boost attendances due to the timing of the shift change at the local steelworkskillerandflash said:

Afternoon Addicks, first things first, The Forresters is long gone along will all of it's delights. The North Stand will almost certainly be your area, and capacity is 800 max at the moment because the old girl that is Roots Hall is more than a bit crumbly. Our new consortium owners are working their nuts off to renovate the ground but I fear our cup game will be too early for North Stand improvements. I'm really hopeful that Mr Bonne will take his opportunity to shine for 90 minutes and show us that there is a good player in there just waiting his moment (you lot). We've had a lot of upheaval over the last few years and some big player departures and injuries have affected our 'very hard to beat' spirit of last season. Nevertheless, we'll turn up and give you a decent game hopefully without our keeper decking any of yours (that was a bit of a lively game, wasn't it). Please feel free to feel sorry for us and let us progress to round 2 as we need the dosh.
Obviously it's going to be a very hard game for Southend but 8k of Shrimpers will be giving it large in the hope that Mr Bonne does you yet again (I live in hope). I'm told we will know what the date will be on Friday, and tickets will go on sale shortly afterwards. Friday night under the lights would be my choice, always a great atmosphere.35 -

Chesterfield used to kick off at 315 on saturdays, I asked one of their fans where I worked, he said it was to allow "more time in t'pub", I suspect there was more to it than that.HarryLime said:
