Kent Cricket 2024

Geddes and Mckerr have left surrey. Both were offered new contracts and wanted by the club but wanted to move for more regular first team cricket.
Mckerr seems to finally be past his injury issues and Geddes has huge potential. Both have apparently signed deals with other countries but not said who. Kent could do much worse than both imo.2 -

Geddes has joined Middlesex, and McKerr has gone to Notts. I'd forgotten that Kent had briefly loaned McKerr, but then remembering Kent loanees is as hard as remembering all the Charlton loanees!
Middlesex have released Mark Stoneman due to their salary cap.2 -
One aspect of county cricket and specifically Kent are the subject of mens' caps. We currently have just five capped players - DBD (211), Leaning (221), Joe Denly (207), Billings (212) and Crawley (219). Of those, only the first three named are likely to be seen next season in the CC team on a regular basis. This mirrors the Charlton squad - so few players with any sort of longevity at the Club. If we went back to the 1976, we had 17 capped players in the Kent squad and there would have been at least a dozen footballers that would have played 200 plus games for CAFC. Times change but, in terms of creating an affinity, especially for young fans, the transient nature of players these days does make it hard for that to happen. That, to me, is very sad.6
-
Given that, in addition to the released Qadri and Arafat (neither of whom were getting any games), there are probably another half a dozen players currently out of contract, one can only assume that Kent are either waiting to offer contracts to those players until the new coach is appointed or the individuals in question are keeping their options open. In fact, if someone like Compton had a move sorted, that would surely have been announced by now - he knows that he's a fixture opening in red ball but is almost certainly keen to be playing white ball but needs to find a county that will guarantee that and/or offer him a more lucrative/longer contract.

I must have missed this in the original statement but, according to the list of Kent players on site, Wes Agar will be returning to us for "April-July" which I suppose is as much as we might hope for given that the days of overseas players staying for the duration of the season are long gone.1

Compton sticking around for 20252

I wonder if the issue of him not playing in the 50 over competition was part of the contract negotiations.0

All good signing players back up but we are just going to end up putting out the same team that has served up absolute garbage for the past few years aren’t we1

Cook has recently said that both Ekansh Singh and Ben Dawkins will get opportunities in the 50 over comp. That means that the existing contract of Ekansh must run to the end of 2025 and that Ben Dawkins is going to sign in the next week (he's 18 tomorrow) a rookie contract. I've updated those along with the recent announcements:
Arafat Bhuiyan 2024 Released
Ben Compton 2025

Jaydn Denly 2026
Jack Leaning 2026
Matt Parkinson 2026
Chris Benjamin 20270 -
What Kent need is the cricketing equivalent of Dr Will Abbott, to reduce the injuries. It might not have been enough by itself, but without so many injuries we might have stayed up, or at least avoided spending so much money on panic short term loan signings0
-
Just looking from the outside - does look like there's a gap for an all formats top order overseas batsman in that squad list. But I guess new coach will be appointed before any more overseas signings1

Oh absolutely! No idea how much Sussex were paying Cheteswar Pujara the past 3 seasons but it was worth every penny. Someone with a bit of experience will be vital in Div 20 -
Alec Stewart did an interesting interview on the BBC TMS podcast.
In it he suggests that in time some counties may opt to only play white ball cricket.0 -
Kent barely bat for 50 overs anyway...5

Worcestershire have tweeted "Business As Usual". Only time I've been there was when Seb trialed and it is a lovely ground. Shame that they will have to leave because the cost of having to constantly repair the ground (no doubt without an insurer prepared to offer terms) must be astronomic

They’re the most obvious victim of it at the moment but cricket is going to have a real problem with climate change and the game as a whole doesn’t seem to take it seriously1
