It was less than 18 months ago, not “a number of years”.
All the comments on Campbell after Rotherham were that he came on and helped control and change the game.
One poor performance today and he’s suddenly no better than Louie Watson.0 -
Just another bizarre Charlton signing. Looked to be one of the best players in the league a few seasons ago, could cope at a Championship level, came with nothing but praise from Hull fans, yet he looks so ordinary.

Dobson was dropped a month or so into his time with us for not being good enough and everyone had written him off too.

This was from the SLP following the Bolton game. Seems like it may have been a bit premature.
Two ways of looking at it I suppose: he's learning a new role and will take time to adjust, or he's being asked to play a role he's not suited to.
Dobson looked like he was transitioning brilliantly from the sitting role to playing in a more advanced position by the end of last season, so maybe Jones can achieve the same with Docherty. New club, new position and taking on the captaincy is a lot to ask, and we're not even ten games in yet. Hopefully things start to click soon.

I expected more from him but there’s still a long way to go this season.
So much work has clearly been put into getting our defensive structure and organisation right. It does feel it’s come at a cost of our play in possession and in attack.7 -
On the basis of what I've seen, i.e. home games, its Doc or A campbell vying for the same spot, not both together. Coventry has been top man lying deeper and Berry seems to operate more naturally a little further forwards and can keep us in possession when the hoof ball out of defence doesn't get flicked onwards by Gas.
You can take your pick which one of Doc or Campbell should be dropped after yesterday's shit show. They both need a kick up the backside by Jonesy. If Mitchell can get so harshly dropped after not putting a foot wrong so can anyone, even if they're the skipper.

Is it excusing mediocrity? Or is it maybe being able to look at a player who has played 112 minutes for us, one of them a start and thinking that maybe the player with nearly 200 appearances across the Championship and Scottish Premier League and has never played below that level might have more to offer than his first league start showed? We always do this on here and it goes in cycles. People were doing it about Terry Taylor when he was thrown unfit into a rubbish team and got injured again, plenty calling him shit and saying they never wanted to see him play again, but one decent banter cup appearance and people are begging for him to start alongside Coventry (who was also another failed signing last season after not immediately settling into a patchwork team). Maybe Campbell is completely busted (like Tyreece was, check the abuse he got last season and compare it to now) or maybe he's come into a team struggling to impose itself in midfield and was the wrong choice for the game. It's not excusing mediocrity to look at players with decent pedigree, which is exactly what people have been crying out for instead of L2 hopefuls and players with bad injury records, and think that a bad performance doesn't necessarily have to mean that's all they have to give, but players aren't allowed bad form or a bad appearance, they're 'shit' immediately. I'm disappointed with Docherty so far but I hate this stupid idea that you're somehow complicit in the team not being promoted by September by refusing to want to be the first to race onto the internet and complain so you can say you were the first to say that player was rubbish. I feel like Allan Campbell must have enough about him to do better than he did yesterday. Similar for Docherty and the way he's been playing.
At the same time, how many players have come here with 'pedigree', rave reviews etc. and put in awful performances in a red shirt.
The only metric that really matters is how well they play for us.

I think he’s ok but not spectacular. He does lots of little things that break up play and helps out Ramsay quite well defensively. Can’t remember a huge amount he’s done on the ball because we don’t play the ball through our midfield for some weird reason. Looks to have a decent shot on him though, will probably score a couple of long range goals this season

New signings need time. Is he with his family, is he on a hotel, these could affect performance. Different training techniques, different facilities at the training ground (worse probably) and playing a slightly different role and tactics all mean players need time to settle.

When Jones bought him in he said Docherty would play forwards and get us goals.
Docherty is 28 yrs old and has a record of 21 goals in 300 games. That averages at say 3 a season across 45 games.
He is, I assume, a defensive midfielder being asked to play an attacking role.
It doesn't make sense to me.6 -
Go back a year and if someone had said Hector is no better than Innis you’d have been on here telling us about his record at Fulham. A year later and it’s not unreasonable to say Hector was no better for us than Innis. Just because a player was once good doesn’t mean they always will be. We’ve had a bad habit in recent years of signing players just as their form goes off a cliff. Once upon a time you could point to players like Simon Francis (and quite a few others) and say there was something wrong with us because players would be bad here but good again when they left. That trend has ended and now they seem to turn bad here and then stay bad and drop down the leagues. If these players we’ve signed are all decent Championship players, why did no one in the championship want them? The early signs are it’s because they’re not championship standard anymore.Callumcafc said:

Allan Campbell though only turned 26 in the summer. He played regularly when Luton won the Championship playoffs. It didn’t work out at Millwall, but they went through 3 managers. At his age I find it hard to believe he’s coasting as we’ve seen players do in the past.
I think we’re not seeing the best of some of these players and the style is a big factor. The midfield watch the ball fly over their heads all game. Ahadme isn’t the target man we needed. TC plays like the winger he is. Even when the midfield do get on the ball, they’re all similar types of players. We don’t keep the ball long enough and then pass quick enough at the right times to get the wing backs into dangerous areas to create chances. It’s no wonder only the defending has looked good at times this season, while our attacking play has rarely impressed.6 -

Interesting isn't it. I've noticed that too, there's 953 comments on Ahadme's thread and 239 on this one. Given their playing history and the fact Docherty is far more experienced as well as being our captain I've been more disappointed with his performances.
