I like to think I’m more patient than most with players, and I know 7 games isn’t that many, but he has shown really very little indeed in those 7 matches. Not really even flashes of something. He’s not strong enough to consistently and reliably get a hold of the ball so he can bring others in and he doesn’t win enough flick-ons reliably. He works hard and maybe offers nuisance value but I’m not sure he’s even that much of a nuisance because I haven’t seen any defenders particularly struggle to deal with him yet.If he can’t do any of those things it makes him a huge problem because we are trying to get it forward early and then play of his knock downs or second balls that come from him or due to defenders struggling to clear it properly due to the pressure he puts on them. If midfielders and striker partners can’t trust him to win it then they are less likely to risk running off him for fear of being exposed on the turnover.
It’s been a flaw in almost every performance this season and one that nearly always improves as soon as Aneke comes on. The lack of any goal threat is a whole other issue and can at least be partially blamed on the almost non existent service from wide areas, but the bits of his game that he has control over and we need him to be good at just aren’t there.
It’s all well and good preaching patience with him but he has to show something more to justify it and really very soon. Kanu had a bad game today but we’ve all seen what he can do at other times - that justifies patience.
The own goal is what it is and, to an extent, dumb shit like that can happen to any player at anytime, but it does give worrying “hapless” vibes and already sets off alarm bells that it’s going to being of those moves that just isn’t going to work. And I’ll remind you all, again, that I was told by a Cambridge fan, who’s judgement I trust, that he was “not much good for anything” - and that is coming from a club where he at least scored some goals.
He’s probably got another match or two to turn it around or Leaburn will be fit enough to start and Ahadme will be out if the team and probably off the bench too. Let’s hope Leaburn comes back as his old self.4 -
Just rewatched the highlights, didn't realise he scored their goal. What a great header but no idea what he was trying to do0

The geezer is absolutely rubbish. Pawel Abbott offered more.3

I said before a ball was kicked this season Gas and Godden would not get 20 goals between them this season and still stand by it1

I'm more concerned about the middle of midfield, and how we continue to have so little creativity, that our forwards have nothing to work off and are scrapping just to get a half chance.5

He’s well and truly crap. I cannot tell you what he offers. Hard work is not something a player should offer, it should be an expectation. If we are to go with Kanu up top, play Godden instead. At least they’ve shown they can work together.
Thankfully, Leaburn is back next week and with completing 60 minutes for the U21s, there is no reason why he can’t do the same for the first team and Chuks comes on for the final 20-30 minutes.
I don’t want to see Ahadme anywhere near the team again if we have everyone fit.9 -
Who needs Yann, we've got Reza.
Makienok will come good.
Ronnie 'gunslinger' Schwartz isn't getting the service.
As I said previously, let's hope the gassman comes good and us booboys opinion sharers on here can then praise him.5 -
The way I see it, he's here now, and there's no chance he can be moved on. I don't think cheering when he gets subbed off is going to help.
He's been very poor across the majority of games, you'd be insane to defend otherwise, but I am trying to be less harsh on the team and players in general. We are a bit of a poisoned chalice atm in regards to signings. It feels every decent signing we make in league1, who comes here with a bit of a record with them, doesn't perform for us. We sign more duds than I care to count, so I'm starting to think it's a Charlton thing.
He looked visibly upset when he came off today from where I was sitting, but maybe I read it wrong. Good luck Gas, you're gonna need it.

Honestly, he was far from the biggest problem yesterday10
-
If Mitchell had played yesterday, would he have screamed at Gas, that’s mine!
Headed the ball away, and we ended up getting a draw, instead of getting nil point.
Maybe / maybe not but Gas is really testing my patience, and needs to contribute more, at both ends of the pitch.1 - Sponsored links:

I don’t want to see Ahadme anywhere near the team again if we have everyone fit.Wing backs that couldn’t cross and a midfield that has no creative spark and was outplayed even by Albie Morgan was the issue.1 -

There was no need for him to even go for the header for the own goal. If he had anything about him he would have used his body and let the ball go out of play.
People will say give him time etc. sure, but you don’t go from this useless to a decent player. He’s shown his clear lack of quality, that won’t suddenly change.12 -

If Ali Dia played for us people would ask for him to have more time.
(Yes this is an exaggeration)3 -

He’s shown his clear lack of quality, that won’t suddenly change. He’s not a threat in front of goal because there are no creative players. The wingbacks are abysmal going forward and everyone knows how poor the midfield has been for years now. There are no chances! And until Leaburn is fit there is no one else that can play that role in Jones long ball style.0 -
Floebot said:It’s clear that Jones put his neck out on the line to buy him vs May, hence why he keeps starting
There's currently no big lump to replace him.1 -
RonnieMoore said:played well again first half worked hard won number of headers and flick ons not his problem no one reading them , look at the diff partners he had already , did not help him today was poor and the lack of balls into the box from our wing backs not helping either … Godden and Ahadme has to have a run as our partnership
I'll give you a clue, he scored with his head, but in the wrong goal.3
