MATCH PREVIEW: Charlton Athletic vs Blackpool | Saturday 21st September 2024 - 3pm Kick-Off

Charlton Athletic vs Blackpool
Saturday 21st September 2024 - 3pm Kick-Off
Referee: Charles Breakspear

Introduction
Results had stuttered over recent weeks, making Charlton fans wonder if the three game winning start was a flash in the pan, and we were now witnessing the true style of results that the Addicks will pick up over the course of the 2024-25 season - Naturally, we're six games in, so the only true answer is "Who knows" - You cant win promotion this early in the year, so its promising we're in the mix. Two wins on the road, one in the League, one in the BDSM Trophy, will have boosted confidence around Sparrows Lane this last week... the real gold dust!!

The Opposition
Name: Blackpool (19th) - Manager: Steve Bruce
Ground: Bloomfield Road
Previous League Result: Blackpool 2-1 Exeter

I'm going to be honest here, my knowledge of the Charlton Fixture List this season is for once, sketchy at best, so wont be surprised if I write the wrong Match Preview for the wrong opponent one day - But having double, and triple checked that we're playing Fleetwood Town... Lets dive into things.

On a serious note, its never a good sign for the opposition when you replace the Manager this early into a new League campaign, but that is exactly what happened to Neil Critchley; the ex-Liverpool coach was relieved of his duties having lost the first two games of the season (against two newly promoted sides in Crawley and Stockport to make things worse), meaning that there would be no repeat of his Play-Off winning antics with the Tangerines that they enjoyed back in 2021 - Richard Keogh was given two games in the driving seat (that was brave!!), which yielded the first 2-points of the season for Blackpool, including a 4-4 thriller at Cambridge, although awkward as they were 4-1 up!!

Now the job has been given on a permanent basis to Steve Bruce, a name well known in Football Management, albeit a name who is potentially in the winter of his career as it makes a slow decline, given this is his first spell in the third tier of English Football, at least since his playing days at Gillingham - However Blackpool won their first game under his watchful eye, a 2-1 victory over Exeter meaning that the Tangerines could visit the Valley with a bit more juice in the engine.

Blackpool themselves have been problematic in recent years for the Addicks, we've just the one victory since 2015, which came at Bloomfield Road in 2020. Like last Saturday, this is going to be one of those fixtures where we just need to get in, get the job done, and leave happy with three points!! - Don't care how we do it.

Charlton Team News
Cambridge were lucky not to end the game with a spanking given the chances we created against them on Tuesday night, and whilst it could easily have ended in a share of the points (Given the late sending off), it would have been a harsh reflection on the performance - In all honesty, its the League that is main priority this season, and from that game it was great to see the return of Josh Edwards, who you'd expect to see on the bench at the vey least this Saturday afternoon.

Elsewhere saw Tayo Edun and Terry Taylor putting in impressive auditions to be more involved, however with a lack of injuries (Lets keep it that way), it'll be difficult for them to see involvement in the League at this stage of the campaign, there is a long way to go though, and even the likes of Ben Reeves / Mark Marshall got well into double figures when we last won promotion from this level... Just a case of being patient for Edun and Taylor, and being ready when needed.

P.S. I'm not sure if Karoy Anderson is suspended after his red card, or whether its confined to the Trophy... the proper Preview doesnt mention it!!

Mannion
A.Mitchell - Jones - Gillesphey
Ramsay - Coventry - Docherty - Edwards
Berry
Ahadme - Godden

Substitutes Bench: Maynard-Brewer - Potts - Small - A.Campbell - T.Campbell - Aneke - Kanu

Good review. Wouldn't expect anything else! Agree that will be the line up. Would like to see Taylor on the bench but don't think we will. 2-0 tomorrow. Ahadme & Berry.
  • Isn’t it nice having options for a change, 3 strikers on bench even without Leaburn,it’s a nice problem to have , Two Zip COYR

By my personal aspiration I think we are one point ahead of the required scenario for automatic promotion.
A loss of three home points against Blackpool puts us two points behind, a draw switches us from one ahead to one behind.
With Birmingham looming, in order to go into that game with not a lot to lose we have to win at home to Blackpool and win one of Stevenage or Bristol Rovers.
So for me at this point in the season I see tomorrow as a must win.

Seeing as everyone is so ultra positive - that Terry Taylor is the new Hoddle , our defence is as Solid as Ashford & Simpson & we have goals all over the pitch then there can only be 1 result.

    3-0

  • Is Albie Morgan injured or just out of favour?

Played midweek. Expected to feature on Saturday
  • I think a double substitution of Aneke and Leaburn on sixty minutes could have a massive effect on this game. Hopefully we’re home and dry by that point but what a pair to bring on to have an impact.

Leaburn definitely won't be playing having done 60 mins for the U21s today, Aneke and Godden/TC/Kanu will still make a big impact

Can't see Edwards starting in front of Small this week, and maybe TC will get the nod over Golden.

    Hoping for a 2-0 win.

Ironic really.  Because, if Edwards was in front of Small, it would be Small you couldn't see.
  • Tough game with Bruce in the hot seat and another real test of our mettle. Grind out another win and we will have a little bit more belief. They have a few injuries and our squad seems to be getting stronger. 2-0 to the Addicks.

TC and Small to both start, Godden will get minutes in the second half alongside Aneke, we might see Edwards come on too depending how Small is playing and coping with Apter on their right.

REG will count himself unlucky to miss out the squad, if he does. It’s nice to have options across the squad and even more when Dixon and Leaburn can be counted to be available.

Anderson is likely be in the squad too. His red card is only applicable to EFL Trophy games so he’ll miss our match against Chelsea U21 next month.

Tough game against a team who should be improved under Bruce. If it was against a Crithley side I’d have expected us to win comfortably as they stuck to a back 3 that they weren’t comfortable with. Blackpool are likely to play a back 4, so the match up in midfield is going to be interesting.

    Charlton Athletic 2-0 Blackpool
    TC
Godden (late on to seal it)

Charlton Athletic have won just one of their last eight league games against Blackpool (D4 L3), a 1-0 victory at Bloomfield Road in October 2020.

Blackpool are unbeaten across their six away league games against Charlton Athletic (W1 D5) since a 2-1 loss at the Valley in January 2013.

Charlton are unbeaten across their last 10 home league games (W4 D6), last enjoying a longer unbeaten run at the Valley back between October 2018 and August 2019 (20 games).

Blackpool have failed to win any of their last five league games against sides from London (D3 L2), their longest such winless run since a streak of six matches between February 2015 and August 2016.

There seems to be an unusual amount of positivity which surprises me. Blackpool are still on their new manager bounce. I hope the positive vibe is correct and we can keep the great start going

0-2 including an Albie Morgan screamer. Much pent up elation released by some in the home stands as our players look on confused, none of whom knowing who he is, nor that he has a shot like that in his locker.

Huh, why not sail from Blackpool pleasure beach?

Lack of adventure to cost the Seasiders.  Charlton to sink the Tangerines' dream.

I think we will be more than ok in this one 3-1 don’t care who scores
  • A work colleague is joining the Seasiders river trip. He’s looking forward to his weekend but none too positive about the bit between 3pm and 5pm.

How about giving them a 4-0 spanking?  Goals from Ahadme, Godden, Aneke and Kanu.

    COYA!!
