POST-MATCH THREAD: Shrewsbury Town v Charlton Athletic: Saturday 14th September 2024 KO 15:00

Charlton started brightly up at Shrewsbury this afternoon, pressurising and battling for the first ten minutes. But Shrewsbury found their way back into it and went on a fifteen minute run where they dominated possession and peppered the Charlton box with dangerous crosses. Charlton stood resolute and managed to stifle Shrewsbury enough to go into the break even.

The second half saw adjustments to Nathan Jones’ setup that proved beneficial as Charlton smothered Shrewsbury. On 55 minutes, a Charlton corner looped high to the far post and on to Lloyd Jones’ head, then back into the mix, where Gassan Ahadme bundled it home with a combination shoulder, chest(?) combo. Up until then, Ahadme had put himself about, as usual, and had some nice touches, but I’m sure he’ll be absolutely delighted to have gotten off the mark this season in Charlton colours.

Shrewsbury persisted to little avail throughout the rest of the match. Mannion made a couple of very good saves, two with his feet, and will be pleased with another clean sheet.

A good away win. We’re still not dominant by any stretch, but in recent seasons we would have succumbed to Shrewsbury’s pressure and would have been lucky to have come away with even a point. We’re not there yet, but we’re hard to beat, have enough about us to pull through and turn draws into wins so far. We’re second in the table and off to a good start with more to surely come.

Shrewsbury 0 Charlton 1

A win's a win. 4 clean sheets already this season is a great achievement. I think everyone would have taken this start before the season began and up to 2nd for now. Hopefully Gassan can kick on now. Up the Addicks.
  • Excellent win
Well done GA for the goal and well played all the lads.
    Ramsay was superb.

After six games played, six points ahead of what we picked up from equivalent games last season.

If we can continue averaging a point per game improvement throughout the season, we will finish on 99 points.

Not the prettiest but a solid performance and a really good win. Definitely a “we wouldn’t have won that last season” type match.

  • Great result and 13 from 6 is excellent.

However I don’t feel hugely confident after that! Thought it was a dire performance against one of the worst teams for sure, lucky to come away with a win (could easily have lost on another day). We’re playing a game of very fine lines and I just struggle to see us keeping this going all season without it turning a bit at least at some point 🤷🏼‍♂️

pray it keeps going and we can stay up there but I really strongly feel we are going to have to start playing well at some point if we want to do anything this season.

1 nil to the Charlton !
  • Easy peasy. The main thing is apart from a slight wobble when John Marquis appeared I was never worried from about 75 minutes on that we'd concede. Injury time flew by and I was just waiting for the whistle rather than praying for it to be over. Shrewsbury's problem was that even when they started getting hold of the ball a bit you're not going to get anywhere against this defence if your strategy is crosses into the box. Glad Ahadme has his first goal and that's now 6 games and 13 points. Brilliant start.
  • Great win. The "aerial duel" stats - 63 won in total by both teams, looks to be the most of all matches in the four divisions today. I can only guess it wasn't pretty.

Not a great performance again but you just can’t be unhappy with a 1-0 away win. Another one we probably would have drawn last season.

Let’s start with the positives: a win’s a win, it’s another welcome clean sheet and several players had good games.

But there’s no getting away from it, we are the very definition of a “battling” side. The entire game plan seems to be about playing the percentages - tight at the back, hoofball, hope that something breaks our way. Today it did but we struggled to overcome a Shrewsbury side that are probables for relegation, a team that other sides with promotion ambitions will overcome much more easily. There is very little attempt to pass it around, play through the lines or actually create chances.

I’m hoping that Nj is simply starting with getting the foundations right, and to his credit he has transformed our defence already. But we’ve got to quickly also improve our attacking game - and I mean from all parts of the team, not just the forwards - otherwise I just don’t think it’s going to be anywhere good enough to be challenging for promotion come next May.

You’ve saved me writing what I was going to write.  A wins a win so I’ll go back in my box.  A hard watch but effective.

And can we please get Brownie off the commentary. It’s beyond a joke now.

A resolute dogged performance against a difficult Shrewsbury side, a match won I would almost say by an assist in the shape of a great back post header from Jones, that Gas bundled over the line.
Other than that it was 50/50 stuff, but the result was everything today, and sees us in second place, and another clean sheet into the bargain.
Must say a special word for Mannion, who saved us on a couple of occasions with his feet, but is looking more solid with every game, also great travelling support again, safe journey home one and all...
  • See how the last 15 years have traumatised us. We're 2nd in the league- the highest position we've been in for some time, but the overwhelming attitude is that we're breaking even.

A first for Charlton today. 90 minutes up at 4.45pm indicating the second half  kicked off at 4pm.

IMO this is still a work in progress. This manager knows what he is doing , and when he sorts the goals out ( which I think he will ), we will fly up the league. From 2nd to 1st.

There will be quite a few 0-1 wins on the road. Get your money on.

Can't be too unhappy, and a wins a wins a win but blimey we are a tough side to watch
  • Just focus on the points and not the underlying numbers.

It's like watching Southgate's England, and I guess they ended up doing pretty well on the whole.

If we could learn not to give the ball away so cheaply, we could make life a lot easier for ourselves. Thought we were ok and worth the win (just) by virtue of scoring a goal

This is where I think people like Pep Guardiola would just fail in this league.
  • OK I'm sure lots of people will say a 1-0 away victory at places like Shrewsbury is what leads to promotion. And they are right of course.

But let's not kid ourselves. That was a far from impressive performance. Shrewsbury outplayed us in the first half and could have been 2 up. They had 3 penalty appeals - none of which probably were - bot on a different day one of them could have easily been given. And although Shrewsbury weren't that threatening, they had enough chances to easily have scored.

Midfield was totally ineffective for most of the game, resorting to just hoffing it up front in the hope something would drop our way. It didn't.

Kanu and Godden looked much more effective up front than Campbell and Ahadme although in fairness Shrewsbury were trying to get an equaliser and pushing up more when they came on.

Shout out from me to Mannion. An excellent game. Came and caught some crosses confidently and made a couple of good saves. He looks the part to me.

Onwards but not necessarily upwards if we carry on playing like we did in the first half.

Great to see Gassan get one off his shoulder. Hopefully he can push on now.
Thought Campbell was great in patches. Centre backs very impressive as was Mannion.
But Coventry the MoTM for me. Outstanding.

Said it before and I'll say it again, we won't be pretty but we'll be effective.

4 wins, all clean sheets, a battling draw at home against a team most on here backed at the start of the season, and an off day away at a dangerous side that punished our sloppiness, something our manager is working hard to eradicate from our team.

There's going to be a lot more games like this in our future, our job is make sure we're the ones on the winning side as often as possible.

Happy with a win, especially after that first half where Shrewsbury delivered as many decent crosses in 20 minutes as we have all season. Whatever Jones tells them at half time, it certainly seems to make a difference. I can't help but question though, if it's all about the points and not about the enjoyment of watching, why not miss the match and just read the result later.

It’s ugly but the main thing that needed correcting from last season was our defence and culpability of conceding dog shit goals. Jones has addressed that.

Hopefully, as the season goes on, the fluidity and confidence can improve as we win games like today.

Wins a win. A clean sheet win even better. Would've loved a bit more of a convincing performance though, with a few more shots on target, from a team expecting to be up there, come the end on the season though
