Michael Appleton - March 2025 appointed Shrewsbury manager (p124)

For what it’s worth a Swansea supporting mate thinks about Duff like we do Appleton. No connection with fans, strange formations, playing people out of position and above all - belittling the importance of the south Wales derby, in which Cardiff did the double over them I believe.
It’ll get howls of derision from some but Powell is the pick for me to get out of this mess. We need a bloke with Charlton in his blood and to get the feel good factor back.4 -

We’ve had players like Gunter and Watson here just to earn a decent contract and not putting everything into their performances. Never really hear it said about managers but it’s not much of a stretch to believe some will happily take jobs despite not being fully committed to put everything into it. They know they’ll either succeed or get the sack and a nice payoff. At a club like ours they can blame it on the ownership and fan expectations then move on to another job.Melrose said:
I thought this right from the start. It just struck me that this guy was just after a payout. His whole demeanour whilst in post seems to back this upCroydon said:1 -
I can confirm I have been offered the job with a three year contract.Rylo said:

I'd just appoint a bit of fire fighter until the end of the season make sure we don't get sucked in to relegation and spend the rest of the seasons getting the right man in ahead of preseason

Rylo will be my assistant and cfgs the fitness coach.
After many hours of discussions we have decided the best formation will be
4 4 4.
I have not seen this formation used before but we believe it will give us the best chance of success.
I look forward to having the backing of all the fans.

I don't think he'll even be getting that.Bangkokaddick said:Maybe the press conference tomorrow will announce a vote of confidence in the head coach.
And we know what that generally means......
Hopefully it's simply because they want to control the news and get a replacement lined up first and not because they're actually keeping him.

Pearson and Euell have the same agent as Appleton and Fleming…0
-
Euell applied for the Wimbledon job but that was 3 years ago now.Exiled_Addick said:
I agree there’s probably no one in house right now. Euell would be the only one who might AND has previous affiliations with us, but don’t know if he wants to be a manager or not. There has to be someone out there in the wider world of football. Where you’re from and who you’ve previously worked for shouldn’t, logically at least, be a barrier to doing well here if they are good enough.Scoham said:
It’s why I generally prefer to gamble on a young manager than go for managers like Slade, Adkins and Appleton. If they were that good they’d have a Championship job or higher.Exiled_Addick said:I don't know if the stats back it up, but my perception is that the majority of promotions from League One are won by managers in their first job or certainly still earlier in their careers. If managers are any good, they might start at this level but they don't stay here for long. To win promotion from this league you need players capable of playing the Championship. I think you also need a manager/coach capable of managing in the Championship. Nothing in Appleton's record suggests he is, or ever was, good enough for that level so his appointment never made sense from day one.
If we're getting rid of him then in my opinion we should not be looking at well-known names, unless we can somehow tempt someone down to this level who you would really expect to be managing higher. That would be a very tough sell, so our chances of attracting a good enough manager to get us promoted are probably improved if we look for bright and ambitious young coach taking their first steps in management. The added wrinkle for us is we have rarely done well with managers with no previous connection to the club. Northerners don't seem to fair well down here either (Jimmy Seed aside).
I don't know who to suggest, I just don't know enough about what is going on at other clubs, but, for me, that is the general profile of manager we need to be finding. I'm hesitant on Bowyer and Powell. Bowyer could be a good fit for the squad, but will he work well with Andy Scott and head coach not manager structure? Same perhaps goes for Powell plus I'm not sure he would want to set up in a way that suits the squad we currently have.
I’m not sure there’s someone like that at the moment. It made sense with Powell, Bowyer and Jackson. I don’t get the same feeling with Pearce or Euell, so I’d be happy to see Duff or similar come on. Just don’t want to see another like the first three I mentioned. No doubt they can talk the talk in an interview, and while they didn’t have great squads they all underachieved with what they had/have.

Re: the Pearson speculation.
Plenty of Bristol City fans responding to this Tweet who seem to be pretty fond of him.
Also noticed a few mentioning recovery from recent back surgery, so perhaps that rules him out anyway?

Would love to see Gary Rowett. A proven success, an ex Addict. Maybe his football isn't the most pleasing on the eye but 15 years of watching shit football and losing and I don't care.5

Shouldn’t the formation be 999 👩🚒blackpool72 said:

Wouldn’t mind Pearson, proper no nonsense manager that would light the fire that Appleton has extinguished.2

Alex Neil is available, another I’d be happy with him but not seen him mentioned yet6

I've interviewed Appleton (it's in the latest MOD mag) and I didn't get the impression that he was uncaring or arrogant.
He did come over as very driven and focused, almost obsessively so as shown by how he used his working out and tattoos to cope with losing his playing career at 27.
I was surprised how open he was about that with a stranger and knowing it could go into press.
I asked him to compare himself with Garner and Holden in terms of fan engagement (BG seeing it as a distraction, DH as vital) and he put himself in the middle. He saw the need to engage but also said he was very keen on having the time to do the other parts of his job. I would have placed him closer to Garner on that scale.
He also didn't seem too sold or not that bothered about the coach/technical director set up. Almost felt that he was going to do his job regardless of titles.
He became really animated talking about golf which he watches daily but plays not enough.
And he's aware that his physical image (shaved head, tattoos, muscles) might make some people think he's thick and he has played on that in meetings with executives.
I met Holden and liked him a lot more, met Garner and he was a quiet, unassuming guy, quite liked Appleton for his honesty and drive but it's not a popularity competition, it's about winning games and none of them did or are doing enough of that.

I'd hazard a guess that most fans wouldn't care if he had the arrogance of Zlatan if he was winning games.

John Eustace has got an impressive CV for a man so young.
Treated pretty badly by Birmingham.10 -
Maybe a bit unrealistic, but might be interested in the challenge, and if the board can sell them the dream.. How about Steve Cooper? Worked with Scott a few times, good understanding of working with young players.. Yes, will be expensive.. But what an appointment he would be14
-
I like the Eustace idea , but I also think he's probably someone that holds out for a championship job? Will be someone that gets sacked in the next couple of weeks I'm sure.1

I’d be shocked if we are fishing in that pond. The likes of Cooper and Potter will surely be next up for PalaceDubaiCAFC said:Maybe a bit unrealistic, but might be interested in the challenge, and if the board can sell them the dream.. absolutely no chance, he just has to wait a few weeks and he’ll be back in the premier league guaranteedDubaiCAFC said:Maybe a bit unrealistic, but might be interested in the challenge, and if the board can sell them the dream.. Not sure we can afford to take the risk employing a recovering addict.Athletico Charlton said:Would love to see Gary Rowett. A proven success, an ex Addict. Maybe his football isn't the most pleasing on the eye but 15 years of watching shit football and losing and I don't care.6 -

Potter would be way out of our league, but Cooper maybe not so much.. If he has a relationship with Scott, and understands what the owners are trying to do, and with our academy he might be tempted.Danny Addick said:

But personally I can't see it.. Let's see how good Scott is at selling1 -
Cooper isn't just unrealistic it's ridiculous. Do people forget we're 16th in League One, I don't even think the likes of Eustace will consider us.22

Yeah that's my thinking, although I thought he was nailed on for QPR before Christmas and they went Scandinavian. Definitely deserves a another chance at the Championship. I can't see Nathan Jones being an option either for the same reason.0 -
Question is will Appleton be in the dugout tmrw evening0
-
Money aside, I can't see him taking the job for any number of reasons but mainly because if how it would have on his CV if and when he is sacked by us. It's one thing to lose your job as a PL Manager but as someone in charge of a League 1 club there is only one way you can go. The next manager will be number 15 in the last 10 years under all sorts of regimes, including this one, so why would he think this situation is any different?DubaiCAFC said:Maybe a bit unrealistic, but might be interested in the challenge, and if the board can sell them the dream.. Yes, but a poor performance v Nortyampton then surely his position is untenablecharltonman2016 said:Question is will Appleton be in the dugout tmrw evening1 -
If he has gone I think I would rather an old head in until the end of the season. Curbs would be perfect.
Steady the ship and give SMT time to get the right person in place for the long term. They could be in place without it being public so they can watch the games and come straght in at the end of the season ready to go.4 -
Time to bring our SAF home! I wonder where Guy Luzon is these days!7
