    Let's not kid ourselves, it was always a meaningless award. The very name should have been the clue to that. It was just a way for the BBC to fill some airtime on the cheap whilst gaining some publicity and, since to advent of phone voting, raise some cash. Ultimately though its just a bit of nonsense, but it's just about got enough fun in it to get us chattering. The fact that it is a very poor year shows it up for its meaninglessness.

    Very slim pickings this year, but it'll be Earps. 

    Like any televised awards ceremony I haven't watched it in years, if ever tbh, but if it's the sort of thing other people enjoy crack on. Does seem to be irritating the "defund the BBC" demographic though, which brings its own entertainment.

    Broad is a household name whether you like cricket or not. 

    The scientific evidence I bring to the table to back up this is what is affectionately known as the 'Mrs JB test!'

    My wife has never watched a game of cricket in her life but she knows who he is.  She can also tell you who Broady's wife is, what pop group she was in, what radio station she works on and what their daughter is called lol.

    To be fair to them both, they've got almost 2m instagram followers between them. 

    For some balance, despite watching the ladies WC final earlier in the year, I'd happily bet any amount of money that she couldnt name the Lionnesses goalkeeper even if her life depended on it.
    Maybe just me then…

    not a household name in my house, but then we (like the majority of the country) don’t watch cricket…

    It's a shame Broady has spent basically his entire career on Sky. One of England's all time greats , if he wins it this year I wouldn't be surprised if his partner in crime Jimmy Anderson is well in the running next year against Bellingham.

    From a personality perspective, the kindness shown by Jack Grealish to.many young handicapped/disabled supporters is very honourable. He would get my vote for his work away from the pitch.

    Looking into it a bit more, she did a lot more than that.

    Reaching a world cup final is a good achievement even if they didn't win it. She also reached the FA Cup final too.

    Times sports columnist in yesterday's paper lists not included recent and current UK world champions in a variety of sports, including in the iconic 1500 metres .. as with the recent comments about the demise of 'Question of Sport', the BBC selection smacks of box ticking and 'meedja favs' rather than proper sporting achievers. I am surprised that a trans-gender candidate is not included, perhaps even a remotely viable one

    Next year's could be carnage. Olympics, Euros , Jimmy Anderson's likely farewell tour and I'd be shocked if none of Norris ,Russell or Hamilton made it.

    What makes you think Norris, Russell or Hamilton would make the 6 next year?

    none of them look likely to be in contention for the F1 title

    Why was Michael Smith not on the list either? World Champion much more impressive than not winning a world cup (even I could do the latter)

    I think Lando will grab his maiden win and get on there. Mercedes who knows where they go development wise.

    Earps was 1/8 on to win with Broad at 11/1 2nd favourite as of last night 

    The bookies could see how the public would vote and slashed the odds accordingly

    It's been going downhill since the year Man Utd didn't enter! Congratulations to Mary Earps though. Glad it wasn't Detorri as five minutes of Frank talking would've sent me to sleep.

    As impressive as they all clearly are, a bit of a joke Mary Earps wins. No chance a men’s player wins it through just playing well in an international tournament, they’d have to win it to have a chance. 

    I dare say if Nike had sold her kit from the start the publicity would never have been there and she’d never have won.
