    Don McAllister might appear on both the played for and against list. The one downside of the legendary 4-1 Flanagan hat trick game was that he broke Mark Penfold's leg. He later played for us for a couple of seasons.

    This must be the game you reference in an era before cards were used. I've mentioned this before on here, Curtis (ex Kent coalfield miner) put Matt Tees two rows back into the old 'cricket stand' and in the same game, threw himself head first at a cross into our box, missed the ball and collided head first into a goalpost .. I exaggerate not, the post shuddered and the noise was like an axe splintering wood. Curtis just got to his feet, shook his head and trotted back to his own half. He was a VERY hard man who played well over 500 league games during a VERY tough era.

    Jimmy Hill was ever a pragmatist, as a manager and director/owner his motto was win win and win at all costs. He also advocated and saw the now demolished Highfield Road ground converted into the first all seater stadium in England, all seater until Leeds fans tore up the seats and littered the playing area just a few weeks later !

    Hard to get past Duncan Ferguson in modern times...did Jimmy Case ever play at The Valley? Tough as old boots as they say. Mick Harford was another one. Like others have said, Halesy was never intimidated, him and Micky Droy would knock chunks out of each other then walk off at the end like old mates.

    there is a difference between hard and just plain dirty players .. Leeds in Division2 .. dirty .. Bremner, Giles, Hunter and Collins, hard and (mostly) fair .. Jack Charlton and Terry Cooper

    That early Leeds side under Don Revie, initially struggling at the foot of the then Division 2, was a sight to behold at all levels of ruthless competition & physical intimidation fair and foul.

    Witnessing some challenges you almost winced yourself. 

    It was a genuine education in the dark arts.
