Barnsley kicked out of the FA Cup

A Professional Game Board Sub-Committee has removed Barnsley from the 2023/24 Emirates FA Cup for fielding an ineligible player during their First Round Proper Replay against Horsham

The Sub-Committee’s members ordered that Barnsley be removed from the competition, and that Horsham be awarded the tie and progression to the Second Round Proper.

Subject to any appeal by Barnsley, Horsham will now play away to Sutton United in the Second Round Proper on Saturday 2 December 2023

  • Of course, the rules in the EFL Trophy are completely different. If you field an ineligible player, you go through to the next round.

Although the League One club have not named the player, Football Association rules state only players who are eligible for the initial tie can feature in any replay in the FA Cup.
Forward Aiden Marsh was on loan at National League side York City when the first game took place on 3 November, before being recalled and then starting in the replay at Horsham on 14 November.

justice for making a team of part timers travel up to Barnsley on a Friday night

  • Going to be annoying for any Barnsley fans who have purchased train travel

Bummer. Had £100 on Barnsley winning it this year.
Perfect! Got £100 on Horsham winning it this year!

Bad show T'Barnsley...  On a more selfish note, it is somehow comforting that incompetance in football administation is thriving outside of the SE7 postcode!

They wouldn't be the first team to reach the FA Cup Final having lost a match en route...

(Charlton lost 2-1 at Fulham in January 1946)

Wasn't picked for tv coverage initially

Wonder if the can still add it as I'm sure they would love Horsham on tv or if they are limited to the games they can pick

Pretty sure that Dick Tydeman played for us in the FA cup 3rd round not long after we signed him in December 76, no one noticed that he had played for Gillingham in round one or two the same season. That would probably get you kicked out of the competition, although we saved the FA the trouble by losing after a replay IIRC.

To be fair to Barnsley, they have apologised, and won't be appealing. Unlike some Premier league clubs who appeal everything.

So Barnsley & the eventual FA cup winners unbeaten in the competition, this season.

Fair enough, but they knew the rules and tried it on and got caught, so good luck Horsham in the 2nd round at Sutton...

Did they try it on or was it incompetence or a mistake.   They won't be the last team to fall foul of fairly obscure rules (must have been eligible for original tie), especially in the lower leagues.

Sounds like it was a really irritating error - The lad in question was on loan @ York, didnt play in the FA Cup for York so wasn't cup tied

However he got recalled AFTER the original game with Horsham, making him ineligible for the replay

I don't suppose they will be the last to fall to these rules, but they are incompetent at least in "not knowing the rules"...this is a professional club we are talking about, ignorance is no defence...they knew...

Apparently they have previous in the EFL Trophy last season but worked it out whilst in the warm up and pulled the player from the line up before kick off

I sincerely hope Mr Dangerfield protects Charlton from any such happenstance for any of our teams.

At a lower level the club secretary will be a volunteer so these errors have happened and will continue to happen

When it’s a payed club secretary at a Football League club these should not happen but nobody’s perfect
