Tramadol is crazy stuff. A few years ago I had chronic knee problems and the only way I could get any sleep was to be ripped to the tits on Tramadol. The problem is I would be driving to work the following day and needed to stop for a 10 minute power nap as I was so drowsy. I realised how easily it would be to become addicted to it and only ever took it when I needed it and haven't had one for a few years now and won't take it again.
My sleep patterns have been shocking for a number of years and this was pretty much the only thing that has conquered it - but the risks were too much.
I can see why players would get hooked on it - many are in constant pain for one reason or another and this gives them some relief but in truth I am glad this is getting bad because it is seriously dangerous shit!1 -
I’ve taken Tramadol a few times over the years for a bad ankle I had. Can remember one time when I had taken quite a bit of it over a few days, I was driving up to Hull and just realised that I couldn’t remember any of the trip I had made so far. Haven’t taken since then.My vet prescribed some for my cocker spaniel and he was like lifting his front paw and looking at it as he he couldn’t believe it was attached to him.4

Tramadol has been around for decades and has been part of the prescribing menu that also includes other opioids (particularly codeine, which is closest in terms of strength and prescribing criteria). It is considered safer than codeine as it has a higher threshold for overdose. It is particularly sought after by heroin users and therefore there is a lot of availability in the illicit drug market. The obvious concern is that one unintended outcome could be more people using codeine for pain that can't be managed by OTC painkillers.0
