Since the other thread got closed....

Always great to see him back playing and more importantly affecting the game with his presence today by all accounts. Obviously still loads of question marks there but if IF we could somehow manage him and get the best of him for 30 odd games from the bench this year... could change our season... or alternatively in 3 games time he's back on the shelf and normal service resumes???

Its the hope that bloody kills you ain't it!

    Are there any "haters"?

Nobody has ever questioned his ability as far as I can recall.

But that makes the complete frustration even worse as we know what he CAN do on his day and, crucially, when he's fit.

But we've been down this road many many times before.

I think we all hope he stays fit, plays more games and scores goals.

It's no coincidence that Chuks fitness inconsistencies have kind of mirrored Charltons performance inconsistencies over the last few years.

If we could keep him relatively fit for a whole season I think you'd see a big change in the latter. I know we are questioning the wealth of our ownership but if I was them I would move heaven and earth to keep him fit.

Thanks now i have visions of hundreds of slightly rotound men in business suits jogging along next to chuks shouting encouragement through megaphones like something out of Rocky

    Haters?

Yeah, the people saying he should tear up his contract and retire after his most recent setback. Chuks has been specifically told not to read online stuff relating to him because it inevitably devolves into people saying he's stealing a living and should be medically retired.
(Though if he'd read some stuff about himself this summer he would have been able to enjoy the absolutely bonkers thread where a poster tried to say that paying him off would somehow save us money on new players and then closed his account when he realised everyone who hadn't had a complex concussion was telling him he was wrong)

Yes if only we could keep him fit. Such an impact. Weapon from the bench against tiring defenders at this level. Please keep fit Chuks.

When on the pitch he is the most talented player we have. It is sad for us and a tragedy that his body seems to be not upto the rigors of professional football.
He should be a super sub for us given the above. He can change games.

What gets me is he can look so good despite not having played for ages!
Needs a top sports psychologist to convince him he can start matches. He’s way better than Mikes is at this stage of his development, and would be awesome alongside May.

Unfortunately I think we are way passed the stage where we can expect to get 90 minutes out of him.
If he can come on as sub with 30 minutes to go on a regular basis then I think that's as good as it gets.

He is an absolute unit. Must be hugely frustrated with his injuries over the years and probably, he will know best, finds it hard mentally to push himself to the limit knowing that this has caused him to physically break down so many times.

Wish him all the best in both aspects. I wasn't expecting to see him play yesterday and hope that whatever Appleton does helps Chicks continue with a run in the first team that helps improve both parts of his football.

I don't think theres hatred in most people, I believe the issue people have with Chuks is the frustration. A potentially match winning player is constantly injured with an issue that has never fully been made clear. We all know he's talented but we never get to see him at his best. Hopefully this is just the start of his renaissance.

Just keep using him like he was yesterday, forget about him starting games, its suicide in the long run - But he's an ideal battering ram to see out a match, or go for it

And yet the chants for him which you could hear loud and clear long before he actually came on; that was more representative, wasn’t it? . I mean you don’t hear that for Charlie Kirk🤣

Mind you, acknowledging the truth of your point about the Twitter crowd, I wouldn’t rule out that some of them are the same people🤣🤣

btw I thought his body profile looked a bit different yesterday- but more than likely it was just the black kit.

I think maybe if the issue IS in his head (at least partially) then maybe this would actually help with that. Less pressure to be "90 minutes" fit, just be ready to come off the bench and ruin some poor defender's day.

Found Appleton's comments about disagreeing with sports scientists interesting in the context of Aneke. I've wondered if he's been under conditioned for a while because everyone's terrified he'll break down. But surely if you don't build the strength it's easier for him to break down.

I had to have a chuckle before the game when fans were chanting "One more year, one more year george Dobson", then a small group behind me started singing "One more game, one more game Chuks Aneke".

Hopefully, now we have two or three other strikers, Aneke can build up minutes as a sub at his own speed, rather than making him play 90 minutes before he is ready
  • With games being around 100 minutes this season, even Chuks coming on in the 80th minute will be a decent bonus for us.

It’s key that fans (I think most of us do), the club, and the player now accept Chuks cannot start games or play an hour plus in a game. Chuks playing 15-20 minute cameos should still add a lot to our season.

Absolutely this, I think we need to cut the guy some slack, he’s a 4th / 5 th choice striker at best, and needs to be used in that way, great to see him back, but I’m not getting my hopes up.

The notion of Chuks never starting games but having 20 minute cameos being something to be pleased about speaks volumes about how far this club has sunk
Chunks of the crowd are pleased to seem him on the bench because he's more popular than Charlie Kirk and might have an impact - even if it's only one impact before breaking down again - in contrast to Kirk who could turn out for 110 minutes every week and never come close to making and impact
That's not so much "a low bar" as the total absence of expectation

Brings to mind professional misery guts, poet and balladeer: the late great Leonard Cohen.  When asked in an interview how he felt about being branded a pessimist he replied "I think those descriptions of me are quite inappropriate to the gravity of the predicament that faces us all."

I don't think there is something massively wrong with being pleased that an injured player is back and hoping he can make a success of himself this season after what has been a terrible 18 month spell. I don't think there is a fan among us that wouldn't love to see him being able to start games and affecting our season positively - but saying that i think fans are being realistic in their expectations and i don't think that indicates what you are suggesting in my view.
  • I like any comment that quotes Leonard Cohen.
  • As already said, good to see him back, and would be good to see more of what he can produce, not really sure what his "injury" was, thought it might be more than the standard issue, and seem to recall it being stated, or not, that they were unwilling to disclose the actual cause of him missing so many games, but whatever it is, just stay fit Chuks please, 'cos we could certainly do with more on the pitch rather than off it...

I bet Golfie said it first

  • Glad he’s back. A little surprised if I’m honest but the proof will be for how long. 20 minutes of Chuks is better than none at all.
