Also his mum was an alcoholic, and he himself has just spent 6 weeks in rehab.
Reckons he's now in the best frame of mind he's been in for years, if ever.9 -
It’s amazing he’s achieved as much as he has. Poor chap. Hope he gets the support and help he needs and comes out stronger.13

I read recently that he was one of the first back at Everton for Pre-Season training - Hopefully he can rediscover his form of old.Chris_from_Sidcup said:Also his mum was an alcoholic, and he himself has just spent 6 weeks in rehab.

Yeah but he gets paid a lot of money so its all good.
Not watched it but that summary tweet is awful. People shouldn't always have to share this stuff in public but the constant trolling and abuse almost seems like they have to just to explain things. Poor sod.5 -
If he could back to even 60-70% of the player he was in his first three years at Spurs then he'll be very useful for Everton.ForeverAddickted said:

Listened to the whole thing and just hope he can find his way back and get the support he needs , sounds like he did the interview to stop the tabloid's leaking that he's been in rehab.7

It is quite bleak isn't it. It's incredibly brave for him to do this interview but it hasn't taken a genius to see that there's been something severely off with Dele for a while now that goes beyond just a loss of form. Despite that people have been piling in on him for years, but now that he's felt the need to explicitly state what happened to him there will be weeks of fawning over his bravery. I've no issue with people praising him for this, what he's done is incredibly brave, but I reckon you wouldn't have to look too hard to see those Football Tweet type accounts ripping him for every poor performance or failed move either. Wouldn't it be nice to live in a world where we just acknowledged that everyone has something going on and that we never really know what situation people are coming from when they suddenly change or do something that we don't like. I look over at the Chuks thread often and think about his body refusing to let him do his job and the physical and mental pain that must cause him, and the amount of grief he then gets for that on top. He's been told not to read threads about him and it's not surprising when the comments are mostly people saying he should retire and we should tear up his contract and criticisng him as if it's their money being spent on is wages. I wonder how many times we'll have to have people like Dele do interviews like this before football fans start treating players like people.AllHailTheHen said:Yeah but he gets paid a lot of money so its all good.

a bit sad really as maybe he wasn't ready to talk about it all but had too in order to stay on top of the storyMarcusH26 said:Listened to the whole thing and just hope he can find his way back and get the support he needs , sounds like he did the interview to stop the tabloid's leaking that he's been in rehab.7 -
Dele is talking about mental health and helping people and so on, it's all very sincere and quite touching. Then it breaks to say "Brought to you by Sky Bet".
Fucking hell.20 -

It definitely seemed like there was bits he wasn't really ready to talk about or at least had only recently during his spell in rehab and having spoken to therapists about that he felt like he could now talk about. His childhood sounds absolutely horrific and I'm not surprised he wasn't willing in the past to talk about it.2 -
If he only got out of rehab three weeks ago it's very, very early days for him in terms of accepting, dealing with and processing it all. I know he says it felt like the right time to talk about it publicly, and he does have a right of reply given how much has been written and said about him, but he's clearly still very vulnerable.4
-
Someone else has already said it and I'll piggy back on that.
Its been clear as day he hasn't been right for a long time now, even to the thickest observer. And the same type of people who will take to any camera or platform available to them to say some glib platitude like "we need to talk about mental health" are the same ones pulling apart his performances when, with that platform and how small the game is they could have done something small but valuable and tangible to help him.
And I dont just speak for Delle Ali here, twitter is a sewer of memes, people, thick people thinking they are comedy geniuses by putting out disparaging videos, pictures or just making fun of players who are clearly having a tough time of it. Thats the height of inadequacy
Everton and Tottenham can't wash their hands of this either, those hubs of sports science, of high performance and analysis, of data have all failed to see the information behind the data and sought the solution that suited them. Move him on

There's been hints before about a difficult upbringing, him saying he didn't want to use his family name, just 'Dele' etc.MarcusH26 said:jacob_CAFC said:

Yeah I found that distasteful especially when one of the subjects is around addiction.JiMMy 85 said:Dele is talking about mental health and helping people and so on, it's all very sincere and quite touching. Then it breaks to say "Brought to you by Sky Bet".
Fucking hell.
Incredibly brave of Dele to open up about this stuff and you can see how raw everything still is. This should shut a lot of people up about him and hopefully awakens some that players are human and go through the whole range of human emotions that we all do. It's hard not to want him to go on and do well again now.1 -
I don't want to make light of this, I don't want to tell this as a joke. But it does feed into my criticism of Gary Neville, who is not an accomplished presenter, let alone interviewer (albeit one I would imagine Alli is comfortable talking to).
But.. reaching out and touching the man's exposed knee after telling the childhood trauma bit was ill-advised.0 -

Oh man, I feel heartbroken for him having watched the interview.
I remember when he first broke into the Spurs first team he spoke about his coloured childhood, his adoption and his issues with his biological parents (thus wanting to be known as Dele as opposed to Alli).
But the rest of it, jeez, it explains an awful lot.
I've written on here countless times before that Spurs under Poch started to fail once his form has dropped. He went from chasing every ball down like an excited puppy to losing interest and you could see as clear as day he has lost his hunger. It was so sad to watch. He's given me some of my best times as a Spurs fan. Singlehandedly destroying Real Madrid in the CL, Liverpool at Wembley and both Arsenal and Chelsea away. Two assists in the Ajax CL semi, the volley against Palace. At his best, he played with a confidence you rarely see in footballers, not at Spurs anyway. He had an auora around him that he could achieve the very top.
I just hope the therapy and getting his story out there helps him heal. Absolutely sickens me he felt he had to come out before the tabloids beat him to it.
He'll always get the very best welcome when ever he comes back to WHL.
It was very telling what he said about Poch, Jesus and Toni. They really do care about their players. Proper father figures and Chelsea's young team will so benefit from him being there.8 -
If you are in a competitive sport at any level you take criticism; what it shouldn't be is Vicious and you take a kicking.
Deli went from being an English international when young to not making a club side's squad of 18. Those of us who have had to live with the black cloud that visits will not be surprised because some of it was known when he dropped his surname that Deli had had a difficult upbringing.
Seeing the bullet points seems shocking;
I will listen later.
Not sure where the line is with criticism but seeing Bairstow called a "Fat useless ginger prick''on CL made me think if someone shouts that out at a match in earshot or on massive social media platform let's hope that Jonny has a different disposition to his dad David Bairstow who hung himself when he was 46 years old. He had survived a drugs overdose just weeks before...
We can all have our different opinions on Players abilities but why the venomous personal comments ?
Reminds me of the school bullies in the playgrounds.
Deli needs to use the bad shit as motivation. You can't have flowers without rain.
Good luck to him.

Instagram is no better. Under Dele Ali's post promoting this interview, are Besiktas fans telling him to die.Carter said:Someone else has already said it and I'll piggy back on that.

I follow Harry Maguire, the absolute personal dog abuse he gets on every post, even about golf or his family, is outrageous.6 -
Oh wow...just read the bullet points. That's tragic. Hope he finds some happiness and can get back to playing. Although I'd say happiness is more important than worrying abt football at the moment. Good luck to him.0

Part of the interview he said he didn't want to just come back but he wanted to be even better than he was before. It felt genuine as well and you could see there was a determination there that he wants to get better both mentally and in terms of his career. Obviously it's a long long way to go but what a comeback it would be if he could get anywhere near where he was previously.YTS1978 said:Oh wow...just read the bullet points. That's tragic. That takes a lot of guts. Respect to him.

Why was it? He was showing genuine emotion and wanting to let him know that it was ok and he was understanding. He knows him and they've had a professional working relationship. He was just reaching out to him. I thought it was a good, human, thing to do.JiMMy 85 said:I don't want to make light of this, I don't want to tell this as a joke. Social media abuse is the absolute worst. Anonymous and cowardly. 99.9% wouldn't have the balls to say it face to face.

Poor fella, what a burden to carry.
Yet another stark illustration of the untold damage that occurs when children are sexually abused. It is a life sentence and society's retribution should reflect this, IMHO.
Hope he finds some peace. Whether he 'makes it' again in football is of secondary importance.2 -
