Phil Read RIP

Phil Read, motorcycling "Prince of Speed", has passed away peacefully at the age of 83. He was racing an MV Agusta at the first meeting I ever went to, the Hutchinson 100 at Brands Hatch in 1975. I subsequently saw his Isle of Man return and other short circuit rides before he retired.

I saw him race a few times at Brands Hatch and also Snetterton against Agostini in the 70s. Saw he had died a day or 2 back - was surprised it didn't make the BBC or other mainstram channels. RIP.0

I never saw him race but am named after Phil Read. He was a unique talent.
Yesterday was a really dark day for bike racing. BSB racer plus podcast host and maths teacher Chrissy Rouse died after a crash at Donington on Sunday https://www.britishsuperbike.com/news/2022/oct/7/remembering-chrissy-rouse
It feels like the worst sport in the world during weeks like this.0 -

Saw him race at Crystal Palace in the early 70s. He was the best of British before Barry Sheene emerged.0
