What I do know though is as things stand we will probably finish around 10th ( assuming we get our normal amount of injuries ).
Bring in another striker and a centre half and the playoffs are achievable.
It would be madness to NOT bring them in.2 -

Wonder if it’s DJ and Gilbey to Lincoln with Scully coming the other way, and a space left for the centre back?4

Henry Irving said:DJ would be a loss but if needs must. Better than Kirk IMHO.
With the squad limit, the salary cap plus TS wanting to reduce his loses BG is having to move people on before he can bring our priority player, a centre back.
But Gilbey was meant to be a done deal to Lincoln and now that's seemingly off so I'll wait until it's on the OS.
Just an observation but squad cap has no bearing as we still have 2-3 places available.
Salary cap also a red herring as, if money from TS came in as equity rather than debt it is no problem and hence entirely within his control.
So it is all about TS and budget.
That is not to say having a prudent budget is a bad thing.11 -
Agreed, squad limit no issue at all, we've only got 19 players so 3 spaces left. The salary cap is clearly an issue for us but it's not like the 2.5mil limit the other seasonAthletico Charlton said:Henry Irving said:DJ would be a loss but if needs must. Better than Kirk IMHO.

Whatever the reasons, we're going down the Roland route of having a small decent squad with youngsters filling the spaces. We'll need a lot of luck, especially with injuries.1 -
The big difference IMO is that our youngsters are good enough and at the right age to make the step up.cafcfan1990 said:

My biggest bugbear is the self imposed salary cap that TS has implemented. Yes, you shouldn't just chuck money about left, right and centre and completely spunk money up the wall, but if we're low on quality, there's a player Garner wants, there's a space in the squad, and it's not absolutely silly money, just go ahead and sign them, especially if it's the difference between maybe scraping into the playoffs, or having a squad that's capable of a proper promotion push where playoffs are the minimum3
-
Happy for anyone to go if it's done at Garner's choosing. Sounds like that's the case here so no issue with it.Scoham said:

Sorry if this has already been said but can Scully play in the middle of a 3?0
-
The way I read it from the article is that we have room within the budget for one more and that is a centre back so that will happen regardless, anything else needs outgoings first.
Happy if it is BG final say on both in and out to shape the squad how he wants. Issue we have seen before since Adkins is not having the players to play the way the manager wants. If DJ and or others leaves and it allows players to come in that allows Garner to play the way he wants so be it.8 -

Are they? Leaburn and Henry are only 18. Some of the youngsters have always been good enough, Dijksteel, Konsa, Aribo and Lookman have all done well.Redrobo said:

If Garner was satisfied with Clayden at LB and Leaburn up top he wouldn't have talked about ideally wanting a full-back and striker.3 -

Great place to live Lincoln, lots of very interesting stuff going on there, with a huge student community.
Some fantastic outlying villages and surrounding towns, from the city centre you are never more than ten minutes drive away from full on countryside and farmland.2 -

Kirk’s final pass is better, but DJ can he a handful, as he was against QPR.Henry Irving said:DJ would be a loss but if needs must. Better than Kirk IMHO.

Striker essential for me, but recruiting both a CB and a striker would ideal.1 -
I think that he would find that difficult personally. He’s more suited to being a winger, or the nippy striker in a front two.Smithy said:Sorry if this has already been said but can Scully play in the middle of a 3?
Basically, he’d be a Washington replacement. But better on the wing, whereas Washington was more effective up front.3 -
I’d agree with this, he’s played up top at youth level but as a 2. I too think he is a Washington type playerCallumcafc said:

They may well be thinking of the "huge student community" though.killerandflash said:

That's fair enough, just pointing out that you can't count one (or 2 if youre counting davison that wasnt an option at all) as leaving and not Leaburn as becoming available. He's a new addition to the squad.Scoham said:
Which is true really, I’ve lost count of the number of times someone has said we can’t rely on Leaburn. I agree to an extent so still want a striker in, but he’s clearly ready to be involved. I said in preseason I can see him causing problems for defenders this season.shine166 said:
You're arguing with people that count Burstow as leaving, but not Leaburn breaking through.Scoham said:

People have gone about a centre forward because Washington was let go, Burstow returned to Chelsea and Davison was sold.

Agree we need one but only two have gone in reality as Davison was out on loan in the second half of the season. We’re also playing 4-3-3 so don’t need as many out and out strikers.0 -
Yes, particularly if Moulder is playing the holding role.Smithy said:Sorry if this has already been said but can Scully play in the middle of a 3?1 -
I agree he is, but we still need another striker due to his age and Aneke unlikely to play in as many games as he did in 20/21.shine166 said:

He claims we’re notoriously slow in the transfer market. If that’s the case now what were we like a year ago?0

The article summary sounds more like a peed off Lincoln fan than a journo:Scoham said:He claims we’re notoriously slow in the transfer market. If that’s the case now what were we like a year ago?Summary
Charlton are notoriously slow at transfers Jack Payne’s proposed transfer was initially discussed 18 months prior but only came to fruition because they were forced to act by him leaving Swindon.
Clubs who are intelligently run, proactive and focused such as Lincoln and MK Dons can grow incredibly frustrated at the inaction. It may well be this lack of urgency in Charlton’s transfers that leaves them with several high paid players sat on the bench with no destination. Things can change as sides get desperate but it’s highly plausible all the names mentioned above are still at The Valley on September 1st.
Lincoln, MK Dons and other clubs will move on and find other targets to fill the gaps in their squads whether that be from Charlton or elsewhere. With Ben Garner left scratching his head looking where he can save money for his rebuild of the team.

Other clubs seem to be able to unload the shit they don't want. Admittedly it's normally to us but...Mendonca In Asdas said:

Another reading of that could be 'Charlton showed an interest in Jack Payne 18 months ago and signed him when he became available on a free transfer'. The notorious slowness of...waiting for the right deal. Crazy talk.Callumcafc said:

He actually doesn't tell us anything we don't know. Gallen admitted that we track players across different windows and potentially wait for them to become available. Payne was lined up to come in and Davison leaving meant that it could happen under FFP.Callumcafc said:

Just a shame that nothing ever happens on transfer deadline day, because every other club is really quick with their transfers and are not at all waiting around to the last minute to finally pull the trigger on them.Richard J said:

The next week is the silly season for transfer deadline deals and we will see who wins on these games of poker. It would be really fun if lots of teams actually did lots of business and then a sports news channel like Sky Sports News could report on it from across the country all day.Imagine the anticipation as the door ‘slammed shut’.
We can only dream.2
