It's a disgrace. Mayor of Bexley James Hunt last year took to twitter last year to mock those who complained about they only pay a couple of pounds towards bin collection in their council tax
  • Rubbish
  • Since the strike last year, the company that was running the collections has lost its contract and a new one has taken over. The council was saying then that the service would improve and it wasn’t the council’s fault. Which is bollocks, as they choice the companies.

  • It’s a rubbish service 😀

If the money coming in for doing such a hard smelly job (or any job for that matter) isn’t enough to live on, or the conditions and hours are exploitative and dangerous, then striking without pay is a perfectly reasonable action to take.
If the ultimate authority is with the council, then the ultimate ultimate responsibility is with those who voted them in.
The council chose a contractor based on the perceived abiity and track record, to deliver the service required. Does not have to be the cheapest. If the contractors staff decide they want more money then the contractor needs to fund it. They entered into a contract to supply a service. It is not the responsibiity of the Bexley residents who bothered to vote, and the political make up of the council is immaterial.

    We disagree regarding responsibility.
However the practical reality is the rubbish not being collected.
Is it down to the elected council to do anything about it?
Maybe they should simply shrug and say ‘it’s not my problem, it’s the problem for the contractors to sort out’.
If you buy a wireless set from an electrical retailer and it doesn’t work, the responsibility is with the retailer to whom you have paid your money, although many will try to bounce you on to the manufacturer.
Those retailers would be completely wrong to do so.
  • Bexley council have published the details of the dispute the offers made by the outsourcing company who employ the bin men and what they are doing and can / cannot do. At face value the outsourcing company seem to have made a reasonable offer but of course it could be better.

As ever a compromise will be arrived at it is a matter  of when.

In defence this time they are prioritising the collection of the non recyclable rubbish on the usual fortnightly schedule to mitigate for residents.

Not great but not yet as bad as last year.

  • Strike action has been suspended.

White and blue lid bins to be collected from Friday. Brown garden bins won’t start being collected until mid-August as garden trucks and crews are needed to clear backlog of other recycling.

Excellent, white lid bin has been colonised by maggots.
