"Couldn't be happier for @jackopayne1 on his signing for @cafcofficial today on a multi-year contract. We've had to be really patient on this one over the summer, as well as ensuring we stick to our core principles and are always putting the Player's wants and needs first to get it done, and I'm delighted that we stuck to our guns and got it over the line"

Multi year contract is a bit of over the top way of saying '2 years' isn't it?Callumcafc said:Payne’s agent on Instagram:

I have reservations about this approach as well. Swindon had a good season but to replicate in a league higher is harder. I think Payne will prove to be a good signing but will he be better than JFC who I think this is a replacement forLewis Coaches said:
Just remind me Swindon finished in 6th position in Division 2 last season and now it’s expected that these same players push us on to The Championship.Sillybilly said:I don’t know what to think. We wanted a clear out. We’re getting one. We wanted some goals from midfield. On the face of it Jack helps here. But the niggling feeling that we’re recruiting a bunch of league 2 players haunts me. Welcome aboard the good ship Swindo, sorry CAFC Jack. I hope you are a ray of light.0 -

He speaks reasonably well. It is clear he enjoys playing football and he wants to succeed at Charlton.1 -
You could argue in some cases we need the right type of player more than we need someone better. Payne adds goals and a more naturally attacking player to our CMs which is definitely something we needed.BigRedEvil said:

This, this and this. There are still maybe half a dozen, or more, that this is the case for.Scoham said:

Said this a while back, if we're recruiting from 4th division don't be surprised if we're in a relegation battle. I'm not saying we will be as I have no idea about the players that we have signed. Of course if we recruit the best from the 4th Division it may work out, time will tell but it is a bit of a worry to me.Sillybilly said:I don’t know what to think. We wanted a clear out. 🤷🏻♂️IAgree said:So a divisive manager, with very patchy experience and success, hired by a narcissist who knows sod all about football, has essentially plundered his old club for a bunch of players who were so great that they were in league two in what should be the high point of their career and we have signed a half dozen academy players? Fabulous!0 -
Blimey buddy. Were you expecting Guardiola, Salah and De Bruyne?!IAgree said:So a divisive manager, with very patchy experience and success, hired by a narcissist who knows sod all about football, has essentially plundered his old club for a bunch of players who were so great that they were in league two in what should be the high point of their career and we have signed a half dozen academy players? I can’t work out if this is a whoosh comment or a serious one. When was Garner considered divisive?I’m looking forward to seeing our new manager and signings play at the valley next season as I think we’re really starting to head in the right direction, hopefully they’ll convince you of that too.13 -
League 2 was not his level.
Top L1- Championship is. I think this is the best signing off this window so far.
Watching the Sutton game, I thought we lacked a player that had the energy to create something, drive forward. It was highlighted by the Sutton centre mid who did those things and made our midfield look slow.
Welcome Jack. I think he's going to please us with his fight and desire, and the goals weve been lacking.20 -
Personally think that this point of view is a little bit snobbish, it’s exactly the same scenario as a club like Luton for example signing George Dobson and their fans grumbling because he comes from League One, despite being a clear stand-out very good player. Give me a promising player climbing up a division all day long over someone who looks good on paper like Ben Watson, Harry Arter, Beram Kayal, Joe Ledley, Tomer Hemed etc who turn up and can’t be bothered.charltonbob said:

Interesting that he can put a free kick in with his 'weaker' foot?0

There would be a slight difference in that situation though, as while Luton obviously would hope for promotion, it's not something they would realistically be targeting, with all the (much) bigger sides around them. If with the likes of Dobson they finish midtable Championship, that would be a good season, whereas if we finish midtable in L1, that would be a very poor effort.SheedyCAFC said:

Luton need players to consolidate in the Championship, we needs players to get us promoted from L1.

Relationships all over the pitch are needed.
Forget your House analogy, think of a jigsaw and it all needs to fit.
The main problem for Cafc in recent seasons is as soon as our midfielders get into the box they fall to pieces !1 -
I think some of our fans have woken up in an alternate reality where they think they're supporting Man CityIAgree said:So a divisive manager, with very patchy experience and success, hired by a narcissist who knows sod all about football, has essentially plundered his old club for a bunch of players who were so great that they were in league two in what should be the high point of their career and we have signed a half dozen academy players? Ali Maxwell and George Elik are worth listening too on footballers at this level of the EFL.8 -
You must have been furious when we signed Nick Pope and Joe Aribo from non-league clubs. I mean, how good could they be if they're playing for Bury Town and Staines, ffs?IAgree said:So a divisive manager, with very patchy experience and success, hired by a narcissist who knows sod all about football, has essentially plundered his old club for a bunch of players who were so great that they were in league two in what should be the high point of their career and we have signed a half dozen academy players? Slightly concerned about the lack of height and power in midfield. All seems to be nice footballers, do think we are missing a Pratley type of player.2
-
If Derby had picked Payne up like they tried to right before he signed for us then you'd be pissing your pants about how Sandgaard won't pay the going rate and ruing us missing out on another target. Teams constantly, constantly sign the best players from the league below when putting together a decent team. Payne, O'Connell and Sessegnon all have L1 experience. Wollacott is Ghana's goalkeeper. Egbo was a highly rated player rebuilding his career while still quite young. These aren't just random lower league players, they have potential and decent pedigree. But by all means we can just look at where they came from and weep, it's not like Charlton have ever succeeded buying players from teams below them.IAgree said:FFS! Another very average league two Swindon signing!
Is the plan to get Swindon promoted to league one player by player?!?

Is Dobson not our Pratley type, albeit with a bit more technical ability?SouthWest_Addicks said:Slightly concerned about the lack of height and power in midfield. All seems to be nice footballers, do think we are missing a Pratley type of player.13
