My dad was there. I’ve still got the program 

I so wanted our 'enery to win that.
In those days I guess we weren't used to loud brash Americans and it kind of offended our British sense of modesty and reserve.
I remember feeling the same way about Billie-Jean King and later Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe.
Later on I grew to love all of them (particularly Billie-Jean and Ali)
Of course the intervening years of saturation American TV  and culture has completely changed the British mindset.
