Why though? It's not like this sale doesn't strengthen us in other ways. Contribute to Valley Gold > better youth products > better youth product sales > better standard of footballer brought into the club with that money. If the fee for Burstow is good we can offset what we spent on Fraser, Chuks and the loans and still have more money to spend on better players next window. If anything the sale is a good advert for Valley Gold because ultimately it puts us in a position to challenge higher up the league.cafc999 said:

We didn't "give" Chuks to anyone. He was out of contract, we offered him a new one, he turned it down and went elsewhere. Then we bought him back which I'm pleased about as he's a proven league one goal scorer and we needed more strikers. And it's nothing to do with Burstow.
Yes, it seems we get Burstotw back on loan for the rest of the season plus the fee. I would have taken the same with Parker, Grant, etc etc but because we didn't/couldn't do that our squad was weakened.
Yes, I'd rather have not sold him now but as said before other than Man City and Chelsea everyone is a selling club.
What we have to hope for is that we get a decent fee plus add-ons and resale percentage and the money is re-invested in the squad. That alone will be progress from the Duchatelet era.
I don't like it but that is the problem with football in general, not just Charlton.
At Fulham they have a 19 year old called Carvelho who's been doing brilliantly for them. He's out of contract in the summer. He was set to be sold to Liverpool for a reported £5m and loaned back but the deal wasn't completed in time so he's staying at Fulham but in the summer he can leave for a set compensation fee which will be a lot less than £5m, I'd guess.
So if we got anything like £5m for Burstow we've done well.
I feel sorry for Maidstone who probably won't get a penny from this deal after we took him from them 18 months ago. But that was the right move for Mason, it furthered his career and bank balance, just like this deal has.
I haven't heard that Mason was acting up or demanding a move ala Parker nor have I seen any lack of effort from him.
Sorry if he goes but good luck to him and hope he has a good career, both for him personally and so that Charlton earn a few more bob off the deal.
Good luck with Valley Gold trying for a sales push now though

Also let's not forget that it's not exactly a terrible footballing decision either, yes Chelsea have a huge amount of players on the books but as the big teams go they are one of the better ones at progressing young players. Also for those saying he'd do better staying with us we can count towards many of the next wonderkid to have come through at the club who have not gone on to play any higher than our level.
I'm a bit surprised that they've gone for him now, can't say I've seen enough to think he's going to be anything special but that might be because I haven't seen enough like many of us. Without knowing the details of the deal it's hard to know if this is good financially or not, it should be given his contract status and our stable ownership and if it proves that the sale goes on to find promotion next year then it is by far worth it.
The thing that annoys me, and others seem to share this view, is that we now only get to see our good young prospects for 5 or 6 games before the PL vultures swoop.
Same will happen if Kanu or Anderson or the other lad who scored in the FA youth Cup game and whose name has slipped my memory atm break into our first team soon.

I'm not sure why people are hesitant to have him come back on loan - we need the bodies upfront where we are undoubtedly light without Stockley, and without Mason we are without a backup for Wash. He's settled here and has already scored in limited game-time, I doubt he'd half arse his role as everyone says how good his attitude is and I'm sure he'd still want to perform, I seriously doubt he's going to 'down tools'.
Would've been nice to get at least one full season out of him before certain PL clubs came hoovering but this is the modern game - as long as we get fitting payment for him with adequate sell-ons etc to help us build a better squad in the future then it is what it is.

Football is sick. Twelve weeks ago there was a good percentage of Charlton fans who had never heard of Mason. The kid gets his chance and plays how many league one games is it ? Seven ? Most of which we’re out of necessity due to Stockley being injured and yet there is so much money sloshing around in the Premier League that Chelsea can take a punt for what I expect and really hope to be in excess of a million. Big money for a league one club but back of the sofa stuff for the PL. Hope the deal secures Mason’s future but I’m willing to bet he’ll never pull on a Chelsea first team shirt. Not bitter because that’s just how football is now. It’s not good though. Another nail in my football coffin lid I’m afraid. Last time I checked there wasn’t that many more left to nail home.15

Agree with this. A lot of these boys mix with lads from PL clubs anyway. Some of them grew up together, came from the same estates and played in the same cages and for the same boys clubs as their mates who are now at big clubs - Gomez, Lookman, Sancho, Abraham, Eze, Aribo, Antonio, Loftus-Cheek, Wan-Bissaka and Sessegnon are just ten who have made it playing in south London but there are loads more currently who haven't kicked a ball in anger who are at PL clubs now and earning £1m plus a year.Athletico Charlton said:

Yes it makes me sick that clubs like that can simply pick off any emerging talent and it has been an issue for decades now and nothing is done about it.
For him it could be the stepping stone to a lower Prem club career, and why wouldn't he want that. There is an outside chance that it could be more than that. Stay with us and he might never see that chance come again so with good striker instincts he took the opportunity when it came.
With our strike force as it is we need him back. We are not safe from relegation.

Eight more Anekes and Frasers? It won't guarantee promotion but surely better than one unproven Burstow? But if the money is anything like what is being suggested, this was absolutely the right decision.0 -
I wouldn't expect us to actually use Burstow now unless we really have to, i.e. to cover Chuks impending injury/suspension....either of which is just around the corner.
One of the downsides to having a large squad, is that it comes with a big wage bill. If the club is to at least attempt to break even without massive cash injections from TS, then it will have to sell players. Paying crowds of 10,000 and no significant cup-runs aren't going to meet the cost of the playing & coaching staff. Plus it would appear that TS has laid out fees for Stockley, DJ and Fraser. It's an expensive business.2 -

Losing another promising youngster to a big boy in the footballing world never gets any easier but it is what it is and will always happen to little old league one clubs like ourselves.
I'm sure if we were all in Masons boots and we were playing for Maidstone just a couple of years ago, and the European champions came in for us we wouldn't think twice even if he knows he won't be playing 5 minutes for the 1st team. I did indeed. And that's why I believe that it's somewhat naive to think that Burstow will turn someone like Kanu's head. Stockley is injured. Davison is out on loan. Leko has not shown up on loan. Aneke playing the whole 90 after years of not having done so, must not be what the sports specialists' advise.
I'd say we might "need to use him".
We are mid table L1 Charlton. We are below Accrington, Cambridge, Burton, MK Dons. I think our fans over estimate the joy to play for Charlton Athletic.

If you forget the ethics and business side of it and think purely at it from Mason's football career point of view. I can't see why anyone would think it's bad for him.
If he stays here he is 4th choice, he is 3rd choice because Stockley is injured, he will be 1st choice once Chucks is suspended/injured.
But that's not because he is really good it's due to happenstance.
If we had 4 proper senior strikers, and if we are serious next season we will. He would be 5th choice and this time next year could be looking at a loan spell at Forest Green.
Chelsea are very, very, good at getting their players loans at the right level and the right clubs. They also carry a lot, probably too much, about when they play.
The only way I see him being a 1st team regular here in the next 30 odd months is if we remain a mid table league 1 club short on senior strikers.
TLDR: There is no down side for Burstow.3 -
