    My twopenneth on it all........

As I said earlier, I havent seen enough of him to really be able to comment, but then again I doubt many have either. What I have seen doesn't scream "wonder kid" and I wouldn't go betting that the fee is going to be in excess of a couple of million. Hopefully add on include sell on fees (plural) because if he is any good it might be the 2nd or 3rd transfer that pays the big bucks.

As for the matter of being loaned back to us. I can see the merit in that at the moment as we are very light up front especially with Stockley still out & no news of an imminent return.  However, not sure of the crowds reaction to him if some of the comments on here are anything to go by, and I can see him getting pelters if he pulls out of a challenge or doesn't bust a gut to chase down lost causes.

One thing is for certain, we need to make signing a striker to be our main priority in the summer. No point having Fraser in the side of you have to strikers to give the ball to.

PWR - A academy coach I know who is reasonably well connected at Chelsea (doesn’t work there) reckons it’s 4m plus add ons

Can't really complain if that's true. In fact think we've done extremely well, and hopefully the add-ons include a sell on fee.

Like golfaddick said above I don't see him as a proper wonderkid either, doesn't scream premier League to me just yet or perhaps ever. Whether he can ever play in the premier League very much depends if he can vastly improve his physical attributes. Because right now even at league 1 level his main attribute is finishing, which granted is what you want in a striker but he wouldn't get a sniff against better defenders as it is.

4m guaranteed I would understand and be okay with. Rising to 4m including add ons like actually playing for Chelsea or England or some such, much less so. Like I said earlier, we'll probably never know.
  • What’s the point in that? Not even significant enough for Chelsea to announce him as a deadline day signing?
It's not because they can't be bothered, it'll be because the deal was really late in the window and they need the PL to confirm the paperwork this morning.

I guess we don't know the fee involved yet so that might change some opinions but i'm honestly not that bothered over this. Whilst we're a league one club without a category A academy, situations like this will always happen. I also can't get too annoyed because we did exactly the same to Maidstone when we signed Burstow 18 months ago. How is Chelsea nicking him from us, any different to us taking him from them?

I've even seen some people moaning that Chelsea fans on twitter don't care and don't know who he is, why would they? 99% of their fans on twitter are based in places like Africa and Asia and only care about 50m+ signings, why are they going to be fussed about a kid signing for their academy? How many Charlton fans gave a shit when we signed him for our academy?

Not usually the view I'd personally take, but I think this is a good time to sell. He's obviously put in some decent performance, but I wouldn't have called him an integral part of the team in the same way Clare, Dobson and Watson are.

Also reckon we can look forward to a couple of decent signing in the summer, off the back of this, once we've guaranteed L1 survival with Burstow's help.

In what way is Watson integral to the team?

He might have been integral next season though?

But anyway, let's see what the fee is. Anything over 3m plus a sell on then i think we've done well for a kid who we only had for a year and has played about 5 hours of football.

I don’t see the big deal to be honest. The club are happy we’ve got a substantial fee.

It doesn’t feel like a Parker or Gomez situation. He’s had a few good performances and now he’s off to a top 4 club for a big fee.

Reminds me of Carl Jenkinson to Arsenal.
    Is it substantial though?

I think one of the things I’m most peed off about is I suspect in comparison to what could be paid to promising contracted youngsters, it won’t be. It just all seems too easy.

4-5 million it pays for a promotion squad next season, anything less than this for a player on contract then I’m with the roland with a guitar comments,  him coming back on loan bad idea as going to be the highest paid player on pitch and causes unrest amongst players.

They will have watched more than his senior appearances - he will have shone at youth level too

Does x% of what we get go to Maidstone?
  • I would say I'll give £100 to the Upbeats that Mason never makes a PL appearance for Chelsea but we'd have to wait 10 years and 15 loans for that to be confirmed.

    Hopefully 50%

I really don’t see the advantage of signing for a big team this early in his career. All he will do is go out on loan or a youth set up. Yet he is giving up a reasonably regular first team place
  • I would just stop playing him. Chuck him in the u23s and play Kanu instead

That seems a bit spiteful and unnecessary. He's in good form and we need someone who can finish chances - which he is. He didn't do anything to make the move happen against our will (a la Parker) so what do we gain from being so petty?

We have him back for the rest of this season. ? Wow, we do drive a hard bargain. First we give Chucks to Birmingham and then buy him back, now this. You just don’t mess with Charlton.
  • Great news another 18 year old loan signing , time to tug one off again
    Charlton fan I heard.
  • Did this actually get done ?
  • The thing I don’t understand about the loan back, given he’s played so few proper games, is:
    - If we feel he’s the real deal then we’d back him to prove it and would wait until the summer, when his value would be higher
    - If we feel this is a better deal than we’d be able to get in the summer then why do we want him back on loan? We’d have to think he’d been playing above his level in the few games he’s actually played and think there’s a risk he’ll drop off over the rest of the season

    In THEORY

Unfortunately just look at us, Ipswich and Portsmouth.    Oh and Sunderland- who MIGHT get out of this shithole league this season after a long time down here!

You MUST spend it well.  How's that gone so far...

I'm with anyone who has pointed out the depressing inevitability of this

18 year old shows promise and grabs a few goals for 3rd division team

Premier league club sees this and instead of looking at 18 year old goalscorer as an old school wonderkid signing pick him off, because the disparity between the top table and everyone else is so enormous they can afford to not even see this as a gamble, on the last fucking day of the transfer window after also helping ensure we get relegated to the third division by taking back a midfielder who had been tearing it up for us to loan to someone else who would pay a higher percentage of their wages. Is shite

We all know he will now be loaned here, there and everywhere for the next 4 years and either dumped or sold at an inflated price because that's what Chelsea do.

I'm never under any illusions with young players and us keeping them, especially in the league we are in but with kids like Burstow who seem decent, have a lot of potential. I'd like us to firstly receive a decent fee but also see that said youngster will be going on to bigger and better things.

Having him back on loan isn't what I would have chosen, I'd have rather this happened 15 days ago so we could have used the money to bring in one of the 4 or 5 centre forwards at this level we could whonwoukd improve us and would hit the ground running
    This @Carter

Chelsea: ‘Who’s that Michael Burston at Cheltenham? Bung them a few million and offer him back on loan for the rest of the season if they get upset.’

No bad feeling towards Mason, who seems a great kid and this will no doubt set him up for life.

    But modern football stinks.
  • Anyway thinking pragmatically if we have got a good few million for him and reinvest in a promotion chasing squad for next season and who knows even have Burstow on a season long loan next term it might not be a complete kick in the bollocks.

However the first part remains to be seen and no doubt Burstow will head to Hull, Watford or Palace in August.

It'll be substantial compared to what we would've got if he'd signed for Chelsea in 2020 after his trial instead of us.

I get it's annoying and disappointing to lose him but we can't be too angry given we only signed him from Maidstone less than 18 months ago and his sale will help to strengthen the squad. I think i'd be a lot angrier if they'd signed Kanu or a kid who'd been with us for years.

But the reality is there isn't a single club in our division and probably the championship who would be able to keep a young player if Chelsea (or another top 4 club) came knocking. Look at Carvalho at Fulham, they're top of the championship, almost certainly going to be in the PL next season and they were about to lose him to Liverpool after 23 senior games. Deal fell through last minute as paperwork wasn't completed but he'll be gone in the summer.
