I do really like him in that position because he has a lot of attributes that suit for him to be there, though I will note I have noticed he has been the wrong side of his attacker a few times but managed to recover thanks to a well timed gangly leg.
If Gilbey needs a rest or is injured, I would certainly like to see him given a chance in Jackson’s midfield, because as with Dobson, I think we will see more from him.3 -
Little personal story here:
I played against Sean 1/2 times when he played for a team in my area called Shenfield High. He was the best player on the pitch by a country mile, there was no one even close. If I remember correctly I am 99% certain he rolled one through my legs once and put it bottom corner and reeled off celebrating and I was hooked off at HT.
What's crazy about him playing CB in league 1 and doing well is when he was at Shenfield he scored so many goals it was frightening. I think once he hit 4 in a game and was one of the best attackers in the area and then went and got the number 9 shirt at hearts.
I remember a few of the younger lads in a team I was at, were talking a little while ago about how he didn't like it in Scotland and ended up and Oxford.. little while later Charlton signed him!
Weird to see him play CB but he Is clearly holding his own and it's good to see a local lad at Charlton

Looks really good at RCB as is calm and good on the ball while being athletic.
Such a shame the ref couldn't be fitter to have seen Stockton's hack at him after such a good interception.
You don't need 3 outright CBs in L1 as you'll only come up against one good striker against most teams. Unluckily for us, against Morecambe, we were without our 3 solid CBs.0 -

The real question is who is Famewo's backup. Souaré doesn't seem fit. It's probably Gunter and Matthews again
The fact that Pearce has been playing right sided of Famewo is more to do with Lavelle being injured.
In our 3 x CB defensive line, Pearce has been fine at central CB, especially as he has right footed cover on the right side, and left footed cover on the left. But Pearce was only playing because Lavelle, brought in himself to cover Inniss, was injured.
IMO Clare has slotted in seemlessly at RCB, adding pace and tenacity at the back yet still works the right flank athletically, showing awareness as an outlet wide. It's almost like having a RB as well as a CB, enabling DJ to play further up the pitch. We've also seen he's capable of a decent long throw.
He may still have to work on his positional awareness, but despite his lack of experience in that role, it's his shirt to lose.

Got to say, I've been well impressed with Clare.
No nonsense and just does the simple things so well. His pass economy is excellent Not looking to hit 40 yard worldys.
His positioning is spot on and he has pace to burn.
My player of the Jackson era so far.5 -

I think the offensive side of his game is his weakness in midfield. It wouldn't work as a 4-2-2 but as part of a three he slots in very nicely. I think he will get better playing that position and it is his route to a higher level. My son was at school with and played with Joe Newton who was left wing back for Havant and Waterlooville at the Valley. He was a deadly striker for the school team and never played the position he is playing now. So this applies even outside the top leagues.0 -
Clare made some great counter attacks last night and in a 3 at the back with 2 CB it can work. If Gilbey is injured or loses form then Sean can also replace him as he has a great engine. So pleased that the "experts" that wrote off Clare and Dobson after a few games are wrong. We are a League 1 side so obviously they will makes mistakes.

They were dire and everyone commented as such. Clare is playing very well in this current position and Dobson has been superb . It's a strange world isnt it this football lark. He has done a brilliant job in this role and I'm hoping he is enjoying it. As it stands I dont see how he isnt 1st choice even when players return to fitness but that's depends on if he wants to stay in that role himself I suppose.0

Been superb in the back 3. Seems to have so much time on the ball, tackles well,.for a centre back has a decent turn of pace and can pass.Actually think the 3 playing together at the moment are an excellent blend. Clare and Famewo are both very mobile and that covers for Pearce's lack of pace.At the moment regardless of Innis or Lavelle being fit I wouldn't change the back 3.11

i've played either up top, out wide or in the middle all my life - on the few occasions i've played at the back, i've found it so easy - some defenders stick to players like a magnet and i respect that but the only attribute that some defenders have that are 'specialist' pther than that are those centrev halfs who attack the ball in the air and see nothing but the ball - no fear - that is a true 'skill / ability' - sometimes the smallest bloke on the pitch wins every header because of desire and bravery - that is what the likes of pearce have - adams and terry had it - u can't teach it but i'm pretty sure that most midfielders and forwards can be converted into very good defenders (albeit not the aerial ball winning type)but not the other way round.1

This is why I wouldn't want to see a back 3 with all of our CBs, would be very limited.wmcf123 said:
