Decent Specialist Fish Restaurants in the South East

Turning into a bit of a Pescatarian recently and have been enjoying some decent fresh fish at home, cooked really simply with the occasional sauce and herbs/spices and some great seasonal vegetables with the odd glass of wine. Rick Stein is your friend!

Sourcing of a good fishmongers around Maidstone is difficult however, as most supermarkets seems to have lost their butchers/fishmonger counters, (except Morrisons) and I generally head off to a superb fishmongers in Faversham both for fresh fish and seafood. I'm also keen to try new dishes and types of fish I've either neither previously or rarely tried.

Not really interested in the chains, like Loch Fyne as they are no more than 'average' fair and lot is pre delivered rather than prepared fresh to order.

The legendary Sportsman in Seasalter is of course excellent.
The Crab & Winkle in Whitstable is great too….plus you can buy at the superb fish mongers/market downstairs.
Bit of a slap for you from Maidstone but would be well worth it.
  • If you fancy a bit of a drive, there used to be a good one in Westbay
  • Chapmans in Canterbury.
  • J Sheekey .. expensive, but well worth it now and then .. Seafood & Fish Restaurant | J Sheekey, Leicester Square (j-sheekey.co.uk)
That might be a bit difficult for Nick as I imagine using public transport isn’t something he’d be too enamoured with.
Whilst mentioning great fish restaurants in central London Le Poissonnerie de L’ Avenue on Sloane Avenue is worth a shout next time we play Chelsea.😎
    ”Pretentious….moi?”

If you're ever in Dungeness try the Snack Shack. Their street food style seafood is amazing.

Edit - They also have a fishmongers next door and as far as I know all their fish is caught locally with their own boats.

  • A couple of mates have recommended this gaff in Bromley..

I've no idea if it's any good cos unless it comes from the Chippy I'm not getting involved!
  • The Rock-a-nore Restaurant in Hastings Old Town was pretty grand fare, plus Hastings Old Town is lovely

you deserve 10 likes for the immaculate French .. mon ami .. don't know Le Poissonnerie de L’ Avenue and I am not really much of an expensive restaurant goer .. was taken to Sheekey's years ago by a one time boss, loved the food and try to get there every so often .. hope the next time will be a day or two after the Pompey game .. we will see how well stuffed the old wallet (or cards) are later this month
  • The Pearl in Beckenham and Dennys in Chislehurst are both great

  • I'm not a huge fan at all of fish, too much effort for not enough reward and the constant fear of a thin bone getting missed and dragging its way down my throat sideways is too much......

But, fish on the green in Bearsted is meant to be very good, I've heard from sources that I trust on all matters food
  • Fish Union on Royal Parade in Chislehurst is getting rave reviews.

Not a fish fancier myself though...
  • Fish on the Green, Bearsted, is pretty decent:

Dennys is very good. Also it's situated in the waiting room at Chieslehurst station so a must for any self respecting Charlton fan.
  • Preceded by a trip to the caves if you're in any way serious about living
  • Sankeys in Tunbridge Wells is great, never been disappointed.
  • Leigh on sea for some tasty shellfish and a good few pubs!

Haven't eaten in there, but great selection of beers when I've been in for a drink, nice place.

Went to a really great seafood place on the main high street (not at the seafront) here - think it used to be called the Sand Bar but is now Kilkie's...

  • This Hake with lobster and tomato sauce and Sea Bass with fennel puree was pretty awesome although a bit of a drive to Pembrokeshire. 💁

There’s two Sankeys in Tunbridge Wells. Both good but one is a bit more like a bar and not as good as the other one.
  • I went to Cornerstone in Hackney Wick a couple of weeks ago. Absolutely brilliant, it's michelin starred but the prices aren't too outrageous. Highly recommend it for anyone although admittedly it is a bit of a pain to get to.

Been a long time since I've been in Sankeys but had a few meals there and it was always very good.
  • Yeah sorry you were after fishmongers

There is a very decent one opened in Chatham High Street, again not a personal recommendation but my mate I work with eats tons of fish and lives the place. They can get you special stuff on request too

Second this. Had a great meal here a few years back.

    Ah ok didn't know that!!
  • Smiths of Wapping
  • Thanks to @Carter and @Big_Bad_World for the recommendation of fish on the green.

Never knew it was there yet only a couple of miles from me - doh!

Just booked a lunch there on Wednesday for me and the missus to give it a try.
  • Denny’s Chislehurst, old school mate of mine owns and runs it, lovely food.
